Ask Ally Condie - Tuesday, March 12th! discussion
Ask Ally!

I was team Xander from the start, but I grew to like Ky. Who would you choose? And, are you planning to make Matched into a movie? That would be SO AWESOME. :)

So I wanted to know if the story was inspired by the poems or the story came first? If the the story, what made you pick the poems you did?

I want to know how you came up with such an amazing story? And I just have to say thanks you so much for such an amazing story.
Sincerly Emma

Also, if you yourself had to choose between Xander and Ky, Who would you pick??

I was just hoping to get your view? When writing the matched trilogy did it end the way you were hoping or not? What inspired you to write the series?
Thank you for your time and of course the world of your books!! :)
Kayleigh

1.I'm not sure if you can answer this, but, we never find out what happens to Em. So, what happens to her?
2. I read in an interview once that you weren't entirely sure who Cassia would end up with until you started Reached. Is this true? Its kind of shocking, because I see Cassia and Ky as such a steadfast couple. They complete each other and help each other become better versions of themselves. They are amazing together! It's why I love them sooooo much!
3. What happened with the elections? I mean, the reader obviously hopes for Anna to win, but we DON'T know. And even if its supposed to be that way, it is a little unsettling as a reader to NOT know if their future will be bright!
Thanks again. I love Matched! I LOVE Cassia and Ky!
~Chrissy :)

I'm a HUGEEEE fan of the series and I was just wondering if you were going to do another series anytime soon and how you came up with the idea of the Matched trilogy.
<3, Alex

thanks
Abby

I have always wanted to be an author. The only problem is, whenever Icome up with an idea for a book, it always ends up exactly like another book i've read. How did you come up with your idea for Matched? I really need some help!
sincerely,
Maria

First off thank you for writing one of my favorite series of all time! I love the Matched series! I was wondering if you had any advice for aspiring authors? I would love to be an author one day, even though I knew by books could never be as good as the genius that is the Matched series! Thank you for taking the time to give all us readers this opportunity!
Sincerely,
Shelby (my real name)

Of course, I loved the trilogy! I own all three books and fell in love as soon as I heard about Matched. My younger sister actually was looking for something to read, so I gave her Matched. Within the course of two days, she had finished the first book. She was so passionate that she even went out and bought the book in hardcover because I only had paperback. She has actually finished the books faster than me and is one of your biggest fans! You're such an inspirational writer. I just wanted to ask if you had trouble while writing these books (like writer's block), and if you did, what did you use to help get rid of it and keep writing?
Thank you so much,
Sandra

I've read the whole matched trilogy, i even have a signed copy of Reached. When you started writing this trilogy did you already know how you wanted it to completely end or did that develop over time as you were writing the books? Thanks, Rae

I think your writing is amazing, and the best word to describe it is beautiful. It's probably one of the most well-written stories I've read. A lot of my friends didn't like it as much, because there wasn't as much action. In most stories with other heroines, there is always combat involved. What made you decide to keep fighting to the minimal, even though there was a war? I also wanted to ask, before you started the series, did you plan out everything beforehand? Did you plan out the entire society, then plan small incidents that will be revealed as much more important in a book later? Did you plan out webs and links throughout the three books even before you wrote the first one? Just wanted to let you know that you are an amazing writer, and you have written by far the most beautiful words I've ever read. Thanks!

I've read all the Matched books, but who put Ky in the Matching Pool? Where do they get the dresses? And finally who would you choose Xander or Ky?
Sincerly,
Pennie"
LOVE your questions! i have the same ones. i loved your series Ally! thanks so much for writing them. ~Eve

My name is Marlina, and similar to everyone's posts: I admire your books graciously. Sadly, I just haven't the money or time to acquire your books in my school's book fairs. Also, I'll narrow down my fan status: I am not your #1 fan, heck I haven't read Reached yet and your not my #1 author. One request if any of my hundreds- do you visit schools? I live in Wyoming and haven't gotten any of my authors to visit. If you would consider this, please message me back and I'll give you my location.
Sincerely, Marlina
P.S.- I suppose I'm not a sincere fan of your world, but I'm willing if I get to know the author (you).

I would like to know about your inspiration for this series (and other books you've written) and he inspirations for your characters. What part about dystopian worlds made you write about them? Do you ever base your stories off of experiences in you own life? What is your writing process for your books? Approximately how long does it take you to finish writing a book? Have you ever been rejected by a publishing company? What about being an author do you enjoy the most? What strategies do you use to think up and write a story? What are some tips you would give to someone who wants to be an author about writing?
I am a big fan of your matched series! I hope you can answer most of my questions

I love these books! Ok I just have like three questions, how did you come up with this trilogy? If you could meet one of the characters who would it be? Will you make another series? If so Will it be totally different? Okay that was four but the last one goes along with the third one......
I love your books!
Love,
Kaitlyn❤

I'm a 12 yr old 7th grader and LOVED your books with a passion.....I had a panic attack waiting for Reached....
But I was wondering What Ky's past is like...It is a little vague but I still love it
Mo
P.S. Your the best author I have ever read!

Thanx for the time.
Sincerely from a very big fan,
Donna

Do you ever think the of world becoming like it is in your books? And how do you think people would react if they had to go through a matching pool is real life? Would they go with the flow or rebel?

what was your number one inspiration while writing this book? Befor you started to write, did you know how this whole series was going to end or was finding the perfect ending through trial and error? Also, while you were writing did you have an alternative ending to the book in case the original didn't work out? If so, can you tell your adoring fans what it was? ;)
your fan for life,
Sydney

My name is Sarah Chow and I loved your book :) I was wondering that if you are currently writing a book, is it going to be based on a dystopian romance like Matched, Crossed, and Reached, or is it going to be based on a completely different structure?
Thanks!!
Sarah <3

I wondered what made you write about Cassia choosing Ky.For example, what sparked Cassia's interest about liking him?Do you ever think that Cassia could have fell in love with Xander instead of Ky?
Thanks for writing the books and for responding to all of the questions!

I would like to say that you did a great job for writing the whole trilogy. My friend and I are fighting over this matter and I would relly like to know, Who will you choose between Xander and Ky?
Sincerly,
Arrah

I LOVE the series of books you wrote and I wanted to know what age you started to write at? I love to write and it is my favorite pass-time when I want to get away from stress (and schoolwork). I hope to write my own book! Is there a series that you are particularly fond of and recommend? I also want to ask what was your inspiration for the series? I get a lot of inspiration from my dreams. Who was your favorite character? My favorite character has got to Ky. I feel attracted to him in some way that just wants me to keep reading about him!
Thanks,
Mimi

1. What did you do when you had writers block?
2. How long did it take to write the books?
3. Are you plannning on writing or currently writing any new books?
Thanks!

First off, I've loved the beauty of your writing since the first book. My question is: what has been a particular hard scene to perfect in your books or one you are most proud of.
Keep writing :)

I LOVEE YOUR MATCHED TRILOGY! Do you think it could be made into a movie? THAT'LL BE AMAZING. My friends and I LOVE to talk about it all the time. Especially when moments in life are coincidentally related to it. Like the phrase 'Do not go gentle'. I just love the story and the romance in it. <3 <3
Also the way you write each and every character and the way you describe them is extraordinary!
Would there be a fourth book to the series?
Do u plan to have book signing or meet-ups anytime soon? If so, where?
That's all, keep up the AMAZING JOB!
Sincerely,
Andrea Angeli Gonzales (Aa)
Hi Ally,
Let me first say that I am a huge fan of dystopian literature, and the Matched series in particular. Your writing style is superb and I cannot wait to see what you'll do next!
I do have a question pertaining to the series.
I loved the way you incorporated the myth of Sisyphus into the rebellion's manifesto. If you're familiar with Albert Camus, you probably know that he wrote an essay entitled "The Myth of Sisyphus", in which (and forgive me for oversimplifying this) he claimed that the only joy we can achieve is the moment we reach the top of the hill, and we see the landscape out before us.
My question for you is this: As a Christian, I find the Sisyphian myth to be an incorrect way to view mankind's suffering (in other words, I think that we can get over the hill with the help of Christ, and thus we are not hopelessly repeating a futile act of repentance). As a Latter-Day Saint, why did you use the Pilot and his myth to represent the rebellion? Do you think the rebellion is pointless? In the end, what does Cassia live for, and how does she find joy in life?

What are your greatest hopes and dreams for your readers? What advice would you give to young adults who are trying to find themselves in this dystopia called "life"?
