Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments This is where we will discuss and help each other out on what books to pick for the categories.

Here are the categories for next month's challege to give everybody time to scour their TBR lists, order or request books from libraries or bookstores, and suggest or talk about possible choices with group members.

The challenge is not officially open until the 1st of April, so no advance-reading...LOL

1. Read a book whose author's first or last name starts with "A".

2. Read a book picked from an April B-Day celebrant GR shelf. Be sure to specify whose shelf you pick it from.

3. Read a book whose author, setting or character is from California. (Suggestions for this category is welcome on this thread.)

4. Read the oldest book added to your Good Reads TBR shelf. (How to do this? Go to your TBR shelf and click on Date added to sort it. Pick the book that is rank 1.)

5. Read a book that has "one word" for its title. (Ex. Bitten, Decadent, Addicted, etc.)

6. Read a book that you heard or think would be "funny" . (You know, April's Fools and all..LOL)

7. Read a book that has some kind of WAR as a backdrop. (Could be realistic like World War I, etc or imaginary like the Brotherhood against Lessers..as long as you can justify it..LOL)

8. Read a book that has a "male profile" on the cover. (Be sure to post the cover. Let's see if its drool-worthy..LOL)

9. Read a book that is part of a series. (Don't forget to name the series and what Book number it is.)

10. Reader's Choice or if you joined the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge, your recommended book.

That's it, guys. Have fun putting your list together.

Also suggestions for next month's categories are more than welcomed.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael)
I've missed you guys just as much. I've been buying books from target and walmarts like crazy so I have plenty of books for the challenges

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) oohh, new list.
Can you help us out and post who has the April birthdays in the group.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Here are our April B-day Celebrants:

April
1 - Sarah
25 - Tasha
29 - Karen
29 - Jayne
29 - Judah

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Yeah, I definitely need some suggestions for a California book. I never pay attention to where authors are from, and it's hard to know where a book is set before you read it.

Welcome back, Jael!

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Wait - Yz, do the psy-changeling books take place in California? Seems like I remember that, and I have been meaning to continue on with that series, so maybe I'll pick up Visions of Heat.

tosca (catatonichataholic) | 742 comments wb Jael - nice to see you on here again :-)

and oohh yes, ladies - I'm looking forward to next month's challenges (well, I will be as soon as I finish off the last few from this month eek).

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Thanks for the WB I'm so mad i couldn't participate in the March challenges they were so good. YZ you are good with these catergories. I think I'll just do it for fun( we'll see how the April Challenges go first.) I've been lacking on the reading but I can't wait to get started again.

message 11: by Lara (new)

Lara | 109 comments So I am going to go ahead and claim idiocy, but how do you "post the cover" for #8?

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments There is a add book/author link atop the comment box. Instead of "link"ing the book cover you add the book cover. Make sense?

♥Tricia♥ (siddie) | 407 comments [ bookcover : name of book ]
With no spaces.
So it would look like this:

Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #22) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Do we have 2 Karen's in this group? Which Karen has a birthday in April?

Kasia That would be this Karen.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Thanks for taking care of that, Kasia. YOu know me and links..we don't get along very well..LOL

message 22: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Again - no problem.

This B-day category's become my favorite. I find sifting through other people's shelves oddly titillating. Isn't that weird?

message 23: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) I need to change my list then. I used the wrong Karen.

message 24: by Amber (new)

Amber | 715 comments LOL, Kasia, that's not weird at all, I drool at other people's shelves. :)

message 25: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Great, I'm not the only one with this peeve ;)
Welcome to the group Shyloh.

message 29: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Christine Feehan lives in Lake County, California.

message 30: by Kasia (new)

Kasia For the California-challenge I'm planning on reading Little Brother by Cory Doctorow (Sci-Fi, YA set in San Francisco). The reviews are great and I've been hearing a lot of good things about it...

message 31: by Glori (new)

Glori (divina) | 37 comments Yes, psy-changeling books take place in California.

For contemporary romance, some of the books from the TroubleShooters Series (Suzanne Brockamnn) take place in San Diego, California.

message 32: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I almost forgot about that. Troubleshooters, Inc, has a San Diego headquarters aside from the one in Florida.

Hmm...I might put a TS book in that category.

message 33: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) I didn't think of this earlier, but if you like mysteries, the entire Women's Murder Club series (James Patterson) takes place in San Francisco.

message 34: by Lara (new)

Lara | 109 comments What are the rules for picking from the Birthday Girl's shelf? If she has a book on her read shelf and it is on my to read shelf can I pick it? Wow. Did that make any since at all?

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) You can pick any book from any shelf on one of the birthday girls' profiles. If it's already on one of your shelves, that's fine, if not that's also fine. We're not super strict about rules around here.

message 36: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Yup, precisely what Nichole said ^^

message 37: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I second that...Nichole explained it quite well.

message 38: by Lara (new)

Lara | 109 comments Just wanted to make sure. I didn't want to cheat. I found a book one the girls had read that is on my to read shelf. Yay!

message 39: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments LOL...Lara, you can't really cheat in this challenge..LOL...it's all about FUN...

message 40: by Amber (new)

Amber | 715 comments Thank you Kasia, I love these challenges. :)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I clicked on "compare books" with all the birthday girls looking for something off my shelves to read before resorting to the library. Then again, I've got 2000+ books on my shelves on here (not counting 7 boxes of old mostly romance books in the basement) and I've only read about 500 of the ones listed. So trying to work down the books I own not yet read.

message 42: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments That's actually a good suggestion, Briansgirl, because I really want to read books that are already on my TBR shelf.

HA! I'm guilty of doing that all the time. It's essentially killing two birds with one stone - challenge gets taken care of and my TBR does not grow unnecessarily.

That's what I was thinking. I can't not get new books, lol. Even if I can rarely afford to buy anything new, I'm always looking at thrift shops, garage sales, and the library sale. Like I got 10 books for $1 yesterday. So I'm definetly trying to read stuff I already have.

Wow, great deal! You're so resourceful.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Kasia wrote: "Wow, great deal! You're so resourceful."

Thanks. Have to be when you don't have much money. It's either thrift shops, public library or what I've already got in the house to read. It's a rare treat when I buy a book new, or even used online. One reason my home library is so diverse is because I pick them up cheap. When you can get all the books you can stuff in a bag for $1 on the last day of the library's annual book sale, you just grab and stuff. lol I realize Reader's Condensed books aren't as good at the regular edition, but sometimes its the only way to find some books to read. (I just bought 5 of them for a dime each, and they had 3, 4, or 5 stories in each.) I'll have to try the Cat who... mysteries as I have two of them in my Reader's Digest Condensed books (Cat who saw stars and Cat who went into the Closet). I've got a few Nicolas Sparks books that way as well, including one that was a recent movie, Nights in Rodanthe. Anyone know if you must read the Sue Grafton alphabet mysteries in order? I found R is for Richochet for 60 cents as a paperback and have Q is for Quarry as part of the Reader's Digest books. I havn't put them on goodreads shelves but at a garage sale last year I made a deal with a lady to buy her entire Mystery book club set of books for I think $5. Same size as Reader's Digest Condensed books, hardback, 47 books with 3 novels in each, including Agatha Christie.

I know if I like the Lillian Jackson Bruan Cat who series after I read the condensed books that the library has, I believe, the complete set.

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) How profile is profile?
Hunters The Beginning (Hunters #1 & 2) by Shiloh Walker
Does he count?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I just picked a book with a man on the cover. Mine isn't drool worthy, lol, but there is a man on the cover. They usually aren't too picky.
