SOLVED. abused boy named creep (?) time travels [s]

I read this book in the 80s but maybe it was written in the 70s. It was a paperback. I believe it was intended for young adult and I thought the title was CREEP but I can't find any reference of it anywhere. The main character is an abused child kept locked in a closet until a sibling helps him escape. He runs away and discovers some graffiti under a bridge that helps him time travel back about 100 years. He becomes a child laborer, or narrowly avoids it, befriends a girl who has to work for maybe a mean boss? or a nice boss? Ack... Anyone else read anything like this? Thanks!
