Goesta While I would dearly ponder Boyd's no doubt rich and well-balanced protein diet, I shall instead add my gripings about bull-patty rating snipers, what's up with that? The AMZ taint finally leaking in here? Though I gather this has happened before. Why do the powers that be not institute a rule that new members must write, say, 20 reviews out longhand, and that these get vetted somehow, not for opinion but for whether they appear genuine, before anyone is allowed to just post a rating. Otherwise, GR WILL soon be snowed under like certain other sites by these creeps, including the kind of organised hate-campaigns we've seen 'over there', and lose the very respectability that, I surmise, is at least part of what attracted the One-breasted One in the first place.

Roger Kean | 17278 comments I decry your terrible opinion, Goesta. I'm convinced he has a second under cover. You know Americans, they always like double redundancy in case one should fail…

That is a possibility. I really don't get the down voting that occurs on that site - either in the forums or on the reviews. I think there are just mean spirited people in the world who live to bring everyone else down to their level so they can feel powerful. Even on posts meant for fun these jerks so called people like to put a damper on other people's fun. I think they are just sour, unhappy folks who can't stand it when others are enjoying themselves.

Signing on to GRs to do the same just shows that such people have too much time on their hands and can't do anything more productive with that time. :o(

Surely you mean the Complaints Dept??? :-))

I'm torn. There was a time when only those with a genuine love and experience of a medium were ever heard in critical reviews. The Internet and social sites have opened up the entire world, freed all to express their opinions. On one hand, this liberality has enormous (has provided enormous) benefits. But it's also let in the hate-filled, skewed of opinion, and—let's admit it—downright ignorant, ill-educated and, frankly, unbalanced. The problem with great freedom is that it comes with great responsibility and that is a quality all too many never aspire to, or wish to achieve.

My goodness… that was almost a Lucas Lyons-type rant. Rat-spit, as he might say, I've been assimilated. I knew resistance was fewtle.

message 3705: by Goesta (new)

Goesta My next pet will be a fewtle. I can just imagine it scrabbling about, odd furry little thing, hunting for treats in my pant cuffs.

I was annoyed enough to click through some of the dozen miscreants who targeted Kyle, thinking it might be a concerted attack on LHNB, though it does not appear so. Strange accounts, most of them popped up on June 3rd, though some are older, all of them registered their 'ratings' on the 2nd and third. A couple look legitimate but from places like Malaysia, a couple others like spiteful little girls giving one-star ratings to the likes of Winnie the Pooh. Some of them claiming to be reading books that have no common themes whatsoever. Can't find rhyme nor reason, or pattern. Very odd, the whole thing. Disturbing.

You Brits with your attachment to your police investigating police unit (what Americans call Internal Affairs which sounds so much sexier.)

Well you've come to the wrong place when you mention Complaints Department. We welcome corrupt bobbies as long as they respect straight, gay and all LGBTQ people.

But still this is the Complaint Department not Compaints Department. Now I don't mean to just pick on Roger. I mean to pick on the illustrious author and all members from the UK who allow an "s" to creep into their spelling of this group.

By the way Happy 60th Coronation Festivities to all Subjects of Queen Elizabeth II and of course to the regent herself. Imagine being only 87 years old but laden with 1,000 years of tradition without even a manual or online tech support.

I'm going to complain now that when my daughter asked me today why there was some bunting out I had no idea, and I've only just realised! Oops, I think we need some more pictures of Prince Harry's dangling bunting to celebrate in real style. Gawd bless ya ma'am.

message 3710: by Goesta (new)

Goesta @Averin: you try saying "excessive sex chess" in a state of pharmaceutically induced calm brought on by a certain rebellious persona. On the other hand, as some clever editor suggested, it could just mean tic-tac-toe in Europe. If you'd read more carefully, you'd have found said character helpfully correcting his flailing author's several textual fumbles one or two sentences on. The incredibly subtle and intelligent meta-author of the whole mess was trying to suggest general, sweaty exhausted confusion all round. Evidently, on some level he succeeded. ;)

@Lucas: Yeah, right. The only one of those pictures I believe is the one of her Majesty so weighed down by it, she is virtually disappearing under her regalia. I mean, you can hardly make her out at all under that crown.

I must protest to say that I was referring to Goodreads in general. I have no complaints with the Complaint Department.*

I do agree with you - the interwebs is like having the double edged sword. It's amazing how much muck one can find online at any given point in the day. Then you come across truly scrumptious stuff too, like Bookshelf Porn.

I doubt the person read any of those books. Instead someone made a fake profile to attack that authors work.

Goesta Averin wrote: "I wonder if Anthony McDonald's has been abused in the same way? "

Well, that's what I was saying, that it seems not, but that all of these one-stars on Kyle's happened 2-3 June, and most of those accounts (but not all) were opened in June, but with ready-made lists of 'rated' books. Just... strange, but not really a pattern, other than that. (I confess I didn't check very far, such as if some of them were befriended).

Several have tried remonstrating with GR, even before AMZ's take over, only to receive irrelevant or bland responses. GR is only interested in numbers growing, not reducing. I checked the link and decided to risk the wrath of kahn, or whatever his/her stupid name is, and suggest he/she should be banned. Wonder if I'll get targeted?

Thank you All for your sweet and kind words that means a lot to me, thank you for your support xxx <3 Hugs and kisses

I was up to 4 and when I have taken the pain killers a 4 time I could finally sleep some hours, so today on 5 hours sleep, tired and angry about it. If I have a small pause then the effect of the pain killers is zero again and first with the 3-4 time I can be sure the effect is super.

I read the Chronicles of Ylandre and it fluffy and this weekend I can buy all Rogers books + other authors on my list, I enjoy to buy and read books.

My mood is ok today and later I will need the usual nap and the hopefully have some more energy to talk to you and read books.

I visit my parents already today, because they need to see to their Holiday house on Langeland and I want to take care of my cats/children and they take care of me, Mini and Olga can make trouble with my parents, but they know that I can not do the same to me. Mini use to say to me that I need to go to bed if it is late, Olga and Mini are staying with me and our neighbors say they do not see the cats when I'm home alone.

Sorry just need to tell some good and bad things today, hate when it is always about bad things and my pain

Here in Houston, today is the funeral for four fire fighters who died fighting a motel fire last week. It massively sucks when anyone is killed because of their damn job (police, security guards, convenience store clerks) but there's something so tragically ironic about fire fighters dying by fire.

I had heard about this while I was in Houston. I understand that there are still 3 in the hospital, one in critical. It is sad and speaking as one whose husband works law enforcement I agree it is sad to lose these men and women:( My sympathy to your city and the firefighting community.

Very sorry to hear about the fire fighters. Brave men and women in a dangerous profession. So sad.

Harry or Spartacus ? For phwoar factor, definitely Spartacus but I do like Harry.

Sir Captain Aves you do indeed warrant the respect to not be addressed as 'Bro'. You are a respectable pilot for goodness sake !!! Harrumph.

message 3740: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) Annoyinly Googled The cockles and Found a possible answer:

The expression is "warming the cockles of your heart," which means delighting your innermost feelings. Kachels (pronounced cockles) are tiles covering stoves and fireplaces (kachelovens) that radiate heat and continue to radiate that heat long after being extinguished . Therefore ' warming the Kachels of your hearth" was probably corrupted into the phrase " warm the cockles of your heart"

Just another aggravating piece of useless information to bring out in conversation at parties that either makes you look like a sad sack who has nothing exciting to do but google weird expressions or that brilliant person who has a eidetic brain that soaks up everything it sees, hears or comes across.... I'm the sad sack!

Anil (loykalina) | 303 comments I am agitated that I come here to talk about the protests. I was in Taksim, Gezi Parki, the epicentre of the events. There were no police there and everyone was happy and everything was peaceful. However, terrible news is coming from other cities. The police began firing tear gas in Ankara, aiming at the protestors, which they should be firing with a 45-degree angle. My friend there told me that the police also ruined food and the library prepared for protestors by the protestors, themselves. In Rize, everything is said to be like hell. Also, the police arrested 38 people for abetting people to crime on Twitter.

I am once more annoyed that instead of "Basketball Math Gay short film High School boy falls in love with 'straight' best friend YouTube" I get "Unfortunately, this EMI-music-content is not available in Germany because GEMA has not granted the respective music publishing rights."

I am agitated with Anil. Have been reading up on some of the events on an alternative news site called vice.com, which is alleging collusion between Greek and Turkish governments in quelling dissent. Very worrying developments in supposedly free, democratic Europe.

I commiserate with those mourning the brave individuals who risk and sometimes lose their lives protecting the rest of us.

I am delighted appalled at Macky's having discovered that the English language evolved largely from what was spoken in a little corner of northern Germany, once inhabited by the Angel & Sachsen tribes, all because of tiled stoves. Now, don't laugh, but I might be an Angel, at least that's where I was born. Still have some of those cockled hearths in my home town, too.

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) Hey all, been a while since my last complaint. Had my biopsy today and would like to complain that it was extremely ucky, and I had to wait 70 minutes past my appointment, with no acknowledgement whatsoever, to get it done. Grrr. And then I'm pissed at myself for not just sucking it up and taking the needles like a big girl when so many others deal with so much more. Darn wimpy me. :(

And also grumpy about having to shell out $300 smackers to have my poor barn kitty put back together after an owl attacked her. She is one lucky kitty, so I can't really complain about that. However, she is bright white, and I'm afraid the owls will just seek her out again. So, now I'm annoyed at the owls that I so loved hearing at night but will now be worrying they are hooting "come to me kitty, tastes just like rabbit!" Why can they not be happy chowing on nuisance groundhogs? Surely they are just as tasty. Grumble grumble.

Saddened by the news from Anil and could not imagine living in such a place.

I'm irritated by the news from Kyle. People are unbelievable.

I too am a bit disturbed by the Harry picture.

And, I'm happy to see Helle posts with some goodness, and that she is staying strong. Many hugs for her.

Extra special grumles for all those I missed mentioning. :<
