Alas, I regret that will not be as well written as the first time I tried to do it ... stupid campus computer system ... I must admonish myself because I was unable to convey my feeble attempt at humor.

Back in the dim dark ages of the 1980s, the only way to get Doctor Who in, at least in this part of the US, was on PBS and they only picked up the Tom Baker years. When they finally added the rest and the ended the most recent run of Tom Baker episodes they quickly started back with the William Hartnell episodes, leaving the cliff-hanger was Tom Baker's departure well ... hanging ... much to the annoyance of my ex-boyfriend who was huge Whovian at the time. I was not really into Doctor Who at the time as I had not yet been bitten by that particular media critter until much more recently. Anyway, that's a long way of saying that while I've not seen all the old Doctor episodes, I am trying to do so. And if I wasn't so cheap/poor, now that I'm a college student again, I actually broke down and got cable/satellite again I would be able to watch the new episodes as they aired instead of having to wait for the DVDs.

At least it fuels my ire at not being caught up with the good Doctor and I thus have something to gripe about. I do love to gripe. ;)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Griping is a good thing. I wish to gripe that they don't play enough of Classic Who these days! The BBCA specials just are not enough.

Oh, I am of the PBS generation too, happily sadly. I believe what KNME-5 did was have a pledge drive, showed The Five Doctors, then went on to start from the very beginning.

I am annoyed that I must agree with you that there is not enough of the classic Doctor Who being aired. The very first episode I watched was when my ex dragged me to his hometown to meet his parents and then over to his friend's house to watch a videotape of The Five Doctors. I regret that I must admit that I wasn't really impressed. After it was over and most of the other people had left we were discussing it and I talked them into playing the very first episode so I could watch it, they kept warning me that it wasn't as good as The Five Doctors, which I hadn't really enjoyed, but we watched it anyway - and I really liked that episode, The Unearthly Child Part 1. But I didn't watch anymore until I watched the Doctor Who movie in the 90s (with Paul McGann), which I also liked. But then that had Yee Jee Tso to tempt me as well. But it was not until after I started watching the new series and discovering an article/interview with Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) that I really fell in love with the classic Doctor.

That's my personally discovery of Doctor Who in a nutshell.

Rick | 15794 comments And now I must regretfully go home as the computer lab is closing and I must sleep. But I will leave you with one last PLEA to vote for Jonny & Hadji on Poll #3:

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/95...

But I regrettfully must warn you that I will be back tomorrow to check and see if they are still where they belong in that number one slot!

message 2007: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments Who says the very first episode isn't that good? It's the best intro to the series you could have, encompassing the mysteries of the Doctor and Susan and our entry into the fantastic through the eyes of Ian and Barbara - how could that be bad? Silly people.

message 2008: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I'm complaining because Anils surprised that no ones complained in 6 hours.... So I'm complaining except Lori beat me to it so I'm complaining about that too!

message 2009: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 2809 comments It is a funny story. I want to complain about breaking the fourth wall, but that would be silly, since I like it when authors do that sort of thing. And pointing out the misspellings common in fanfic! Nice skewering there.

I regret that it was my ex and his friend who were trying to tell me that the very first episode of Doctor Who was not very well made. But I completely disagreed with them, in fact I liked it much more than The Five Doctors. I believe the problem was that An Unearthly Child is a wonderful introduction, but watching The Five Doctors as one's first encounter with the good Doctor was a tad disorienting and probably not the best way to introduce a new viewer to the series. But I was doing it because my ex wanted me to like Doctor Who very much, but it was not to until. At least until about twenty years later. Now he hasn't seen much of the new series and I've seen all of it, except the newest couple of episodes! grrr!

I want to complain that Anil is surprised that after we've complained so much there was a dramatic pause in the complaints. I mean, what do you want Anil? Would like me to complain that there are still memebers who haven't voted for Hadji & Jonny or perhaps I should mention that some people haven't changed their votes to Jonny & Hadji even after I've repeated threated them with virtual appendage and/or nipple twisting. Perhaps I need to unfurl my vampiric shadow cloak and start hovering outside some more windows at night.

When you hear that faint scratching on your window at night just say "Enter friend, you are welcome to come into my home." Then I will show you exactly why you WANT to vote for Jonny & Hadji in Poll #3.

I must regretfully apologize for missing this. In all the flurry that was yesterday ... well, just spank me.

I got the shirt (which is white with red letters and trim) at cafepress.com. I also got a black shirt with red letters that says: The Spice Must Flow and another black shirt with white letters that says: WWMDD What Would Maud'dib Do? That one always gets strange looks from people around campus.

A very dear friend of mine (who I unfortunately have not seen in years) did a really nice one page comic of a Maud'dib anecdote, check it out:

I regret to inform you that I would bet not many would. The only Dune related tees that I have that even registers with most people as from Dune is The Spice Must Flow. Although I might enjoy picking one up that said: I am the Kwisatz Haderach.

message 2016: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15794 comments I am appalled that over in the This or That Game Thread someone does not know who Jonny & Hadji AND to top it off someone else misspelled Hadji's name. Shameful, just shameful.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Clearly, I must begin a concerted indoctrination education campaign.

Jonny Quest is the son of Dr. Benton Quest, who is a Scientist who works for government making the world a safer place for everyone. Because Dr. Quest is so vital national security the government assigned Race Bannon to safeguard and protect Dr. Quest and his son Jonny. Although the relationship between Benton and Race seems a little more than friendly at times. Race Bannon was even voted as the best Cartoon mom once (although I'm not sure where exactly, maybe Cartoon network - I just don't feel like doing the research). Anyone, shortly before the chronicled adventures begin the Quest's adopt Hadji and he and Jonny quickly become, well, inseparable would be a drastic understatment. They share a room and were depicted sleeping in the same bed in the series. All innocent enough until you start watching the episodes and pay attention to what isn't being said as well as acknoledging those, well I think Roger put it best "those lingering exchanged looks." The lads also have small white dog, Bandit, who is the family pet/mascot. Bandit has black around his eyes that make it look like he's wearing a mask, hence the name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonny_Qu...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonny_Quest

Hadji was given a last name in the second series, but never in the original serie. So, as far as I'm concerned his last name is Quest since he was adopted by Dr. Quest - thus making Jonny and Hadji adopted brothers. But then there are "those lingering exchanged looks" (thanks for paying attention Roger).

So, Vote for Hadji & Jonny Quest in Poll #3:

I was saddened to realize, as I was looking over that website, that the I am the Kwisatz Haderach! only come in infant and children sizes. While I do have friends that think I am a vampire because I do not appear to age, fitting into a shirt for a twelve year old boy would pushing it for me. Actually I might be able to, but it wouldn't be very comfortable. But I could probably get a friend to wear a tee that said He is the Kwisatz Haderach.

Goesta Ok, I give in. Which JQ&H media should one start with? The original series? The TV movies? The comics? I am of course referring to those "looks", but also the apparent fact that they aren't really teenagers until "The Real Adventures of", as far as any acting on those "looks" (in certain rampant imaginations) might be concerned.

You Must start with the original series. I think most are on youtube. You don't need to watch them in any particular order, although Hadji has not yet joined the Quest Team in the episode The Mystery of the Lizard Men.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbzZRo...

Hadji's introduction is in a flashback adventure called The Calcutta Adventure:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZCBxO...

Just remember this was the mid 1960s and while it was originally designed as a show for the entire family, it primarily appealed to boys. So, get in your WayBack Machine or TARDIS and go into it as an 8 to 12 year old. If you get into that mind set, you'll love it.

Then there's "those lingering exchanged looks" that Roger mentioned. And like any good romance the first time Jonny and Hadji meet - well one might think they're never going to turn out to be BFFs (and just look how Jonny is straddling Hadji!). There is so much going on behind the scenes that it's hilarious. But sometimes the scenes when Bandit takes over center stage things get a little long.

message 2024: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I'm in deep complain mode now because having watched both links supplied by Jonny & Hadji's pimp greatest supporter Rick, I am now truly enamoured and want to learn the Jonny slide desperately for when I'm being chased by strange flying dinosaurs or shambling mummies. As this happens frequently I must perfect it soon! I am also deeply perturbed that I now know that Jonny was voiced by Tim Matheson and Roger T. Race Bannon was modelled on the actor Geoff Chandler both actors I like very much. I have fallen under Jonny Quests spell and I'm now craving more!

message 2025: by Rick (new)

Rick | 15794 comments @ Macky - I regret that I must inform you that Jonny Quest can be habit forming and even addicting. Just wait for The Robot Spy, The Invisible Monster and Shadow of the Condor. Then there's mummies and werewolves (sort of) and, of course, Dr. Zin, a kind of Fu Manchu wannabe nemesis for Dr. Quest.

The show was parodied in the series The Venture Brothers.

Not only the doctor has done this to me, I have been contacted by two others who have the same unpleasant treatment, that he contradicts himself says and never will give a proper answer, change in date in your journal, etc. I hate such persons as have a God complex and do not care to make others crippled, he is only out one day and call himself a professor, he forgets that we can contact each other and warn each other about getting another doctor, as he does illegal things and can be fired for this.

I also hate all these weather changes, no sleep and the whole body is in pain, not only that when I may be lucky enough to get a little sleep I get nightmares about snakes and zombies, I hate this.

I add my plaint viz. doctors, which I also feel applies equally to the companies making zillions on poorly understood psychotropic meds. Certainly, there are people among them who desperately want to help and in doing so, acknowledge the risks. But that doesn't sound like the case here at all.

Kendra (book_lover_too) | 337 comments How frustrating is it to have heart palpitations for over 2 weeks with minor chest pain, dizziness and shortness of breath, only to go to the doctor, get the 24 hour heart monitor on and, while I am still having the heart palpitations, they are not anywhere close to the severity that they had been. Some of them were so bad I almost went to the ER but they got better so I didn't. Now I just feel like I am going crazy :-( They'll probably refer me to the head doctor, not the heart doctor :-)

message 2039: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 303 comments I'm really sorry to hear that Kendra has been suffering from heart palpitations. It is irritating that they aren't as severe as they used to so that the doctors can't figure out what is wrong. However, it might also be good that sweet Kendra might not have a serious health problem.
