Ije the Devourer of Books | 14524 comments well after all that fuss about using Amazon data Goodreads and Amazon have made up!! I hope it won't change how Goodreads works and the different reading communities that we can join here.

Totally pissed off about this too, Aves. I see it primarily as a ploy to keep Kobo and Nook and the ePub format down.

The people who started GR and relied on volunteers and reader to build and refine their brand look to be making a low 8digit amount from the sale.

I hate Amazon and DRM. I never buy from there unless I have to. I hate monopolies. In fact I am SUPER PISSED OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should we dedicate a thread to this?

message 1406: by Goesta (new)

Goesta Lets. I just deleted all my creative writing from GR. I'm a total noob author and not in a position to understand precisely what the intellectual property right situation is now, or even what it was before. No longer sure whether I should participate in story events. Feeling totally Fubar.

And yeah, I'm a Kobo. And I will continue to read the books I buy (only for free, the prices aren't that different) on A on my Kobo. So there.

I really have no beef with A. I'm way too naive for that. I order a lot of stuff there. But this suddenly scares me almost as much as if Google had just bought GR. Now there's a nightmare scenario.

message 1407: by Goesta (new)

Goesta Maybe it was an illusion, but before, there was at least an appearance of neutrality behind GR, and the focus seemed to be the members. I came here originally because I wanted to read book reviews that hadn't been skewed by idiots and hater campaigns. Suddenly all that's somehow changed, even though we're all the same people. Is there anything we can (or even need to) do to keep this place the way it was?

Maybe I'm totally over-reacting. AMZ probably doesn't care a whit about what we do on the playground here, they just want a bigger review database. Until the ads show up. And top lists get manipulated around a bit. And I start getting Amaspam in my mailbox. And my ramblings show up in an anthology I didn't know anything about. Under another name. Or?

I'm P.O."d that in the picture of Otis and Elizabeth in the official Goodreads blog announcement at http://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/41... look like they just won the lottery. What am I saying? They did just win the lottery! After being bought out by Amazon they are stinking rich zillionaires now.

A.B., Underneath the announcement in the GR blog did you read all the negative comments interspersed there? Did you get a load of how upset some people are? Sure we can start a thread here. I can put one someplace if people really want to complain about it a lot.

Jerry Ant to top it off, I got sick on a job site yesterday and had the fly home (only 1 hour) but it was bumpy so no bathroom break. I've been home all day not ale to do much but not tired enough to sleep. Ugh.

message 1411: by A.B. (new)

A.B. Gayle (abgayle) If I have to buy books from Amazon, I convert them in Calibre to read on my Kobo. I dislike being forced into certain format.
It reminds me too much of the VHS/Beta fiasco and everyone knows that Beta was the better version.
Sigh.
Why does history have to keep repeating itself? What's wrong with choice?

Someone said something about how Amazon bought IMDB and nothing changed on there and I have to disagree. We don't have cable because I was tired of paying for a crap ton of channels when we only watched maybe 5 of them on aregular basis. So I would watch the one show that I liked through IMDB when it became available 24 hours after airing. However, after Amazon bought it, guess what? There was now a fee to watch the episode. Luckily I was able to watch it on the networks' website but, no fee before Amazon owned, fee after Amazon bought.

So, what does that make me think is going to happen to all of the wonderful stories people post on here that are currently free? How many authors complain that they can put a story up on ARe or Smashwords for free but have to charge a minimum of .99 cents in order to have it on Amazon?

The response from, I think Patrick, that they aren't "expecting" changes wasn't very reassuring.

message 1417: by A.B. (new)

A.B. Gayle (abgayle) Up to you about the separate thread Lucas. I'm still wading through the 19 pages of comments and it keeps growing. One linked it to an article that had this at the bottom:

"Disclosure: Goodreads is backed by True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is an investor in the parent company of GigaOM/paidContent."

Now, I'm not up to speed with all things commercial, but that makes it sound as if Elizabeth and Otis didn't "own" Goodreads and that it's possible this Venture company was instrumental in the sale. Much like a Manager touting his professional footballer around to the highest bidder.

message 1418: by A.B. (new)

A.B. Gayle (abgayle) And this bit: "As for specific design of [the links], we’ll see, but we really think about it from the user perspective. If users really want those links [to other retailers], then those links will probably still be there.”"
So, they can say if every Nook or Kobo owner doesn't jump up and down that no one cared....

Aves Raggiana (avesraggiana) | 200 comments What I wrote on the goodreads sale to amazon thread:

Interesting that this announcement should come out on Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Good Friday, the day that commemorates Jesus' Last Supper in the Christian calendar.

Eat up everyone, before goodreads.com gets crucified at the altar of amazon.com. Unlike Jesus on Easter Sunday however, I'm not so sure the resurrected goodreads will be anything to rejoice about.

Sorry for getting carried away with my religious holiday-thing. As a good Catholic family, I never got to do the whole Easter bunny thing when I was growing up. The Easter season was a litany of Hell, with the nadir being reached on Good Friday. No playing, no eating candy, no leaving the house, no watching TV, no reading, no doing anything fun, no anything, because this was the day Jesus "died for our sins". Just praying, all friggin' day.

Aves, Love the way you brought the Easter season together with the sale of Goodreads. I must use it as a sermon illustration, maybe a complaining and moaning sermon about corporate greed and the evils of monopoly (something like that).

:)

But sorry to hear you had such a ghastly Easter as a child. :(

Hate to rub it in but as an Anglican mine was fun and it was all about hot cross buns on Good Friday and chocolate on Easter Sunday. (Yay) I had a lovely time :) Maybe it went too far in the other direction though.

Alas now I am a priest it is all different and involves sermons, services and really achy feet and no time to guzzle hot cross buns although I will send my son to buy Hagen Daz and I must have chocolate. My feet are killing me and I have a 3 hour service today.

(This last sentence is my complaint so that I comply with the rules)

I'm fed up that I didn't know you could watch stuff via IMDB, I'm not even sure you can watch stuff via IMDB in England, but I know one thing, Four-five years back, when researching IMDB I could access a large database of information, where it existed, down to detail of FX crews, dates of location uses, etc. Now, post Amazon's acquisition of IMDB, after the bare info, hit for more detail and you have to pay/subscribe.

message 1425: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm afraid of how much Amazon will change GR GR is now fine and everyone can share their book reviews and authors can write stories for free, all this will change when amazon will influence this and we now have to pay to be on the GR. There are many questions and no one present to users for new guidelines. I hope that GR gets the biggest influence and not change things.

They have probably done on purpose to send message in Easter, which will worry all of us who are using GR.

They have patent on many things amazon and I do not hope the will destroy all what GR have done and what all GR users like/love with GR, books, review, updates and new published books, books that will be published in the future etc.

I hate to wake up in pain, early in the morning at 6.15 and not get any good sleep, headace :-( I do not have much energy anymore and my mom will be driving with me to the hospital on Thursday and I stay at home with my parents until I can start my biological medicine, because I am so weak and have not the energy to having to cook, without them I would not get much down of food.

I want to be happy today because I will make dinner today and my mom is my assistent in the kitchen, there we make lamb with with garlic, baked potatoes, salad and sauce. Then we'll see "Olsenbanden" where we laugh and smile. Cosy and fun.

Sorry that it was so long, hate that there is so many things to think about *grrr*

I agree. I hope we wont start seeing sneaky charges. I bought a 'free' game for my Kindle Fire. The game isnt made by Amazon, some other company designed it. I was enjoying the game only to realise after reaching some of the higher levels that you have to pay to really enjoy the game, so you have to buy extra lives or extra weapons etc etc
I hope Amazon wont start doing similar sneaky charges here.

message 1427: by Macky (new)

Macky (mactut) I'm worried that we will have to start watching our P's & Q's on general things now. I used to post reviews on Amazon but stopped and came to GR because on here you can do so much more with them and be totally truthful.... On Amazon you could spend precious time on your review only to find that they wouldn't post it because you used the word " ass" or something as tame as that. The community on Amazon is a lot " stiffer" than here and I fear the rules and regs of a large corporation will do the same to GR. the beauty of an independent site is that its community has more freedom therefore a much more friendly atmosphere.... I love my friends on GR and on here but I don't want to have to think before I post for fear of " breaking rules! " and I don't mean our lovely Lucas' most important complaining ones which are totally awesome because they still allow us some leeway for some fun which is of course terribly annoying! Harrumph. ! Plus I would hate to think that GR will just become another big storefront for Amazon and to be honest I do buy from them and I have a kindle but I also buy from a lot more publishers and book sites too. Anyhoo ... I guess we could be getting worked up about things for nothing, but then I also suspect we aren't! Grrr Argh.

I'm gutted that naked men are in Danni's head and because she's mentioned it they're now in mine! How terrible ... I must now try and think of Easter bunnies frolicking in a field of brightly coloured Easter eggs full of chocolatey goodness and naked men covered in that chocolate, rolling down the grassy hill wrestling each other and licking...... Aves Raggiana (avesraggiana) | 200 comments Ijeoma wrote: "Hate to rub it in but as an Anglican mine was fun"

Tell me about it. For years, I would watch my childhood friends take off in their boats and cars on Good Friday for the Easter weekend, while we, under strict orders, were forced to remain in the house, in quiet. No music, no board games, no eating sweets, no building model aeroplanes, no playing with Action Jackson or toy soldiers, no playing at all, no doing anything fun. After all, we were supposed to be in mourning.

My mother had many overwhelmingly wonderful qualities while I was growing up, but suffering boys cutting up on Good Friday was not one of them. The laws on the somber observance of Good Friday were strict, and she was implacable in their enforcement.

I do believe I've been scarred to this day, because I remember Good Friday observances very vividly, as compared to the relatively pallid Easter Sunday celebrations with hot cross buns (couldn't have those on GF because they were sweet and too much fun to eat!), and the home-made, home-dyed Easter eggs. And Easter Sundays weren't all that much fun because guess what, we had to go to Mass and pray AGAIN!

Well, Mum will be very proud of me today. I should call home and tell her I've got the day off and I'm not working on Good Friday for the first time in years, something she'll be very happy about. I'll tell her that I'll be spending the day in silence and solitude...no need to tell her about the guy who might be coming over later...

Someone, in response to a comment I made in the m/m group thread about the purchase, tried using your thread to show me that nothing was going to change. I had to chuckle when I saw it because I knew it wouldn't reassure you.

Amazon is pretty adamant about charging for all of the intellectual property available on their sites, even if it is available free elsewhere so I just don't see it not affecting GR. I can hope though (I will, of course grumble and complain the whole time)

message 1443: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 303 comments Isn't there a way to sue Amazon or alike, because they keep buying those sites and creating an unfair business scheme?
