SOLVED. YA novel about a teenage boy who can't die and can pass the power on to his friends [s]

I'm looking for the title and author of a book I read around 2012, my son and I both read it and he was in 5th or 6th grade. I'm assuming it's YA and definitely fiction, the story setting is modern. This teenage boy survives a car accident and the driver dies. The driver wasn't his father but was the man who was raising him. He realizes the man had passed on the ability to not die or be harmed in anyway to him before the car accident. He tells his two friends, a boy and girl, and they figure out how to pass this ability on to them and the boy can take it back at anytime. They take turns having the ability and trying to kill themselves. But this causes repercussions. I think the consequence is that every time they cheat death, someone else dies unexpectedly or something like that. They start researching the man who raised him and where this power comes from. I remember the main character describing how the power felt, that it was like a lion in a cave that didn't want to leave when he loaned the power to one of his friends. It also started to have an affect on his friends' mental stability, particularly the girl. I can't remember anything else and we can't remember the name of the book. Hoping this sounds familiar to someone.
