READER PICK: Has Dune
ever been chosen? I skimmed the bookshelf and didn't notice it. I've been meaning to read it for so long and finally bought a copy recently.INDIE PICK: Nexus
SERIES PICK: The Aurora Rising series
. These are indie but they meet all the criteria. Really great space opera/alien invasion story with a romance subplot. I had the great pleasure of beta reading the latter 2 installments and can't praise them enough
E.J. wrote: "READER PICK: Has Dune ever been chosen?..."Just checked and ... nope ... I added it to my spreadsheet. Along with your other books.
I'm going to nominate Derelict
by L.J. Cohen for YOUNG ADULT pick again ... it's hardcore space opera that just happens to star a young enough protagonist to qualify.

SERIES
It's hard to tell which books in the Bookshelf are part of a series or reader pick. Also, none of the classics are listed. Are classics not accepted? Like the Foundation trilogy?
First choice for SERIES PICK: Dune;Second choice for SERIES PICK: The Warrior's Apprentice (in case Dune is picked as the Reader's Pick).
First choice for READER's PICK: The Warrior's Apprentice
Second choice for READER's PICK: Dune (in case Vorkosigan Saga is the Series Pick).
[I'd actually like Dune as a series nomination and once Frank Herbert's originals were read to pick up the prequels Brian Herbert wrote (I actually am on the second of the prequels so actually wouldn't likely join in the series read until up to that point).
I'd like to do the Vorkosigan books as a series if Dune isn't chosen as series (following author's somewhat suggested reading order -- author says not a set in stone reading order https://www.goodreads.com/story/show/...) or if Dune did get chosen as a series to do as an READER's PICK for The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. (Shards of Honor and Barryar are sort of prequels in a completely different vein and more of a romance between main series character Miles Vorkosigan's parents which readers may or may not be interested in until they've read more of Miles' story).]
- check for omnibuses of Vorkosigan books in your desired format as well (and in the free library at publisher Baen website because some are sometimes free in ebook form there).
@ Jonathan - you are perfectly welcome to nominate a 'classic' for anything except the Young Adult Friendly pick, although most 'classic' novels aren't 'indie' except in the case of E.E. Doc Smith's co-writer Stephen GoldinStephen Goldin, who rewrote the Family D'Ambert series to bring it into the 21st Century after he got his rights back and re-released it under his own imprint (the Tsar Wars series).@ D.A. - I have Dune under Series Pick for you. Would you like me to also to nominate it for you under Reader Pick? You can do both since we haven't read it yet as a group.
Sean Paul wrote: "James Corey - Expanse seriesBook 1: Leviathan Awakes followed by books 2-6. All great reads."
Hi Sean! We read the first book of that series as an individual read not that long ago, so if we read it we'd have to start it at Book 2. Since we read it so recently, I'll note it as 2-6. Okay?
I hate to toot my own horn but I worked very hard writing a space adventure for young teens and I'm very proud of the outcome. Will you please take a look. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.Starflake on Thrill World/Nicola Cuti

Okay ... we have enough to do some COVER BLING. But first, some notes:@ Nicola - toot away ... I am eager to revitalize sci-fi/space opera as a genre-of-interest for our YOUNG people. BTW - did you add your book to our YA Listopia? https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...
@ Jason - was that a NOMINATION for Nemesis Games?
Okay ... some BOOK COVER BLING!!!

Not to nit-pick but
is the start of the series.
is the second in the series.
Anna wrote: "@ D.A. - I have Dune under Series Pick for you. Would you like me to also to nominate it for you under Reader Pick? Could you add The Warrior's Apprentice as my Reader's Pick nomination (it really is a series start despite two prequels and differing reading orders choosing different starting points).
I'd like to nominate Minder Rising by Carol Van Nattafor the Indie Pick.
It's the standalone novel in the Central Galactic Concordance series, following Overload Flux, which was the Indie Pick a couple of months ago.
I haven't participated in this group, just lurked. So feel free to ignore my nominations!READER PICK:

Scott Sigler's Galactic Football League series. You don't need to like football to enjoy it!
I nominate Spots the Space Marine by MCA Hogarth for the Indie Pick! It's a bit of an unusual format, but it's a wonderful book.

. I may change my indie pick after I see some other nominations. I just read this one.Series:
I would really like to re-read this series. It's one of the essentials of space opera for those that haven't yet, but I don't know if this has been previously/recently been a series nomination for this group. If it's not an appropriate choice let me know. Also I consider Chasm City to necessarily be book #2, even though it is not numbered that way.
@ Packi - Whoops! Sorry about that! Had it on my spreadsheet, but didn't put the pretty cover up. Just added it in so the two little Dunes are right together! That's what I get for logging on in the wee hours!@ D.A. - I added The Warriors Apprentice as your Reader Pick, but I don't have an easy way to 'weight' the nominations. If you don't win this month, you can always re-nominate your favorites next month.
@ Jonathan - we read Leviathan Wakes a few months ago as a group read, so it can't be nominated again. However, it was pretty popular amongst community members, so I'm allowing it to be nominated as a Series Pick because there are still 4 books. K?
@ Abby - welcome! I plugged in all of your nominations except for Red Rising because we read it not too long ago as BOTM, so it can't be nominated a second time. You are welcome to nominate a DIFFERENT book for Young Adult Friendly pick.

*********************************************************HEY GUYS - just an FYI - I'm going to be off with Husband for a much-needed vacation until July 1 and I'm not sure how much internet access we will have, so if I don't get to your book bling right away, please keep posting them. I will get to them all as soon as I get back (probably on July 2).
And could y'all say 'hello' to the new peeps who come into the 'welcome' thread? Thanks! Anna

Lots of good reading in the suggestions here! I'll nominate my new novel STAR CRUISE: MAROONED, which is just out for the Indie category.
Young: Ill second Derelict. I just got it a day or 2 ago on flash sale. I seem to be finishing my backlog in spurts.
I'll go with Derelict as well. I don't know many YA books, but if more than one person wants to read it, it can't be all that bad.

It's that time of the month where we nominate what books we want to read as a group during the month of July. Up this month we have the following categories:
READER PICK: Dead trees is where it's at with the Reader Pick. Nominate your favorite mass market book. This category is for people who prefer to be able to walk into the nearest bookstore to read in paper and/or prefer to get their books from the local library. Must be available in libraries and at least 3 major bookstores, both digital and print. No Kindle-Unlimited locked books! We're a global community.
INDIE PICK: This is the cutting edge of what's new and different in the sci-fi / space opera genre. This category is for the little guys, the author-maverick who goes it all alone without a marketing budget except their own efforts. K.U. books are okay. Authors can nominate their own books because we use Random.org to decide.
YOUNG ADULT FRIENDLY PICK: y'all's sci-fi recommendations are slowly terraforming my teenager's bookshelf and we've got a nice little foothold amongst the sparkly vampires of almost half a shelf :-) Recommend some great reads so we can read and discuss them with the young people in our lives without looking old. :-) Must be a science fiction book with a 'space' component such as an alien invasion or trip into space. No earthbound dystopia unless it has a space/alien component. Must have been published since 1997 (no 'classics' please ... my teen throws them back in my face). Must star a 12 to 17 year old protagonist (i.e., not 'kid turns 18 and joins the military' like Starship Troopers).
SERIES PICK: It's time for a new group series! Books must be available in both paperback and ebook, have an Amazon rating of at least 3.85 for all of the books, and have at least THREE (3) books already released. Can be a 'pro indie' book. Cannot be Kindle Unlimited locked ... it must be widely available.
Drop your nomination into the comment thread below, and then on July 2nd (because I will be away on July 1st) I will tabulate the winners and send out a notice to y'all so you know what goodies to grab for beach reads. Since we use Random.org to pick a winner, authors can nominate their own books.
Be epic!
