No copy at my local library, but I was able to request it through interlibrary loan. I should have it sometime next week
I'm psyched - the digital copy from the library came available today! I'm not normally a fast reader, but already I'm 90 pages in. This one has great characters, setting, and pacing, and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks :)
Wasn't at any of my local bookstores. Will have to order online. Michelle, you're making me want to start reading today! LOL
The discussion for this book will be here. I will make a folder for the other BOTM once it is announced.
Found it, at last, at Books A Million. I've got a few more chapters to read in The Cove and then I'm starting.
Oh good, I can't wait to discuss - I just finished last night, and it was great!! I liked "The Winter People" but thought it faded at the end, but not this one. I'm not sure how to describe it: "tightly written", or "no superfluous words", but what I mean is there was no wasted dialogue, and there were no long, dragging descriptions. Every chapter, every word even, helped advance the plot and give the reader pieces of the mystery. Some said before they didn't like changing perspectives (in The Winter People), but this is narrated by one character, just in the present as an adult and in the past as a preteen. That might work better for some.
I don't think it's a spoiler to say so, but one thing that struck me as sad throughout the book was the cruelty directed at Del, the potato girl. There wasn't the kind of 'awareness' about bullying in 1971 that there is today. Reading about how Del was treated just about broke my heart. I think everyone has had some experience of bullying from childhood - sometimes the victim, sometimes the bully. I'm glad people seem to take it more seriously now than they did in the past.
Finished. And loved it. Michelle, I have to agree with you about Del. Yet she is tough in her own way. I guess she had to be. I thought the ending was handled well though there was one loose end that wasn't explained. I'll wait until more people finish reading. It's hard to talk about the stories cause you don't wan to ruin it for anyone else.
I am sad to say I may not make it to this one this month. I am still working on a few others. Also, I haven't found it yet. I may have to use Amazon or books-a-million's website.
