Hannah Park | 2 comments Hi, so I read this book about 10 years ago but I can't seem to find it. Here's what I remember about it:

It's set sometime between the 16-18th century in the New England, probably before the America Revolution.

Young while girl is kidnapped, along with a white woman and her baby. The infant is later killed (and scalped), and the woman is taken to a French Canadian trader because a she doesn't integrate into the tribe (obviously she is horrified and sad they killed her baby).

The girl is adopted by a family who lost a daughter. She later saves the tribes crops during a heavy storm by digging trenches with her bare hands, which leads her to be given her Native name (something to do with corn).

Thanks in advance for your help!

or The Ransom of Mercy Carter ?

or I Am Regina

...I had no idea there were so any books about girls being kidnapped in pre-Revolution US!

@Sarah: yeah, crazy how many there are, right? The whole genre is creepy & racist, really.

Hannah Park | 2 comments Thanks to you both! The books was on the list , it was the Beaded Mocassins by Lynda Durrant.

That list IS disturbingly long, but it definitely a genre of its own, the Romanticism of the Native way of life. Off the top of my head I can think of When the Legends Die, and the last Mohican. I guess all these stories are set pre-revolution because after that the native Americans were systemically killed, relocated, and/or "integrated."

I read this book when I was a kid, and I still remember it because it wasn't black and white, and the author didn't do the whole "noble savage" trope. There were good guys and bad guys. Now that I have the title, I hope this books is as good as I remember,
