it looks like the book I want is called The Cage: A Novel by Roy Brown. It is OoP, so I will have to try to track down an old copy somewhere to confirm this, but based on what the other poster wrote, I'm almost certain this is it, so I am moving this to POSSIBLY SOLVED.
Thomas, you last commented in 2015. Are you closer to knowing if that's your book? We don't want threads to languish in Possibly Solved for this long.
I DO remember the opening scene: a boy wakes up, alone, in a room with sunlight shining through a barred window. He at first thinks he's strapped in a bed that's attached to the ceiling, hanging above the floor, but then his equilibrium rights itself and he realizes he's in a normal bed. But he has no idea who he is or where he is.
As the story continues, he leaves his room and discovers that there are a lot of other kids also in this place, which is like a big, stone fortress or something, and none of them can remember who they are or what the place is. Eventually, they start to figure out that it is a prison, but there are no visible guards . . . they are all just abandoned there. Somehow, they get fed, but the place is isolated and there's no way to escape, at least initially.
I don't recall where the story goes from there. The mystery is in figuring out who they are, what bad things they did to get put in this strange prison, and why all of it happened the way it did. If anyone remembers this and can point me in the right direction, I will be greatly in your debt!
Thanks,
Thomas
