Grace (fives) | 1090 comments What happened to that thread where we would just talk about random stuff? It was basically a chat thread, but I have no idea if it's still here or it got deleted. The fact I don't remember the nam of it also makes it harder to find.

We used to have a random chat topic called Undigested Lumps but I think it has been deleted or archived. But we also have this random chat topic here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

For the record, you are allowed to make topics. It's not just mods who can do that.

Well ... within reason, though. There are a ton of people in this group and personally I'd prefer that there weren't a billion off-topic discussions ... but I can't speak for all the mods, of course. :P

Patch | 14 comments Why do I keep waking up in the middle of the night screaming and how would you suggest I have a restful night's sleep?

Cough syrup.

message 307: by Patch (new)

Patch | 14 comments Unfortunately my extended family and I aren't allowed into the local drug store seeing as how my Uncle Dale partially blew it up. Instead of making the meth using sudafed at another location Uncle Dale thought it would be best to make it in isle four using the soda pop bottle method. But thanks anyways

Sam~~ we cannot see the moon, and yet the waves still rise~~ | 3061 comments I'm pretty sure we're getting trolled.

message 312: by Grace (new)

Grace (fives) | 1090 comments Um, I have a question...
If one writes a fan fiction where would one put it?

message 313: by Grace (new)

Grace (fives) | 1090 comments Or would one just put in the category that it is instead of something for fan fictions?

message 314: by Isaac (new)

Isaac | 8014 comments Yeah, that's what you would do.

message 315: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Yeah, I would say just put it in whatever genre it falls under regardless of whether it's fanfiction or not.

message 316: by Grace (new)

Grace (fives) | 1090 comments *Sigh... Why am I always over here....*
I have a question...
If I need help describing something in my writing,
Where would I ask for help?
Is there already a thread for this?
I'm just wondering because I have lots of problems describing stuff.

message 317: by Isaac (new)

Isaac | 8014 comments Hmmm... maybe general writing tips?

message 318: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Yeah, I can't think of another place besides general writing tips.

message 319: by Grace (new)

Grace (fives) | 1090 comments Okay, thanks. I'll go over there, :)

Anastasia (booksteainsanity) | 955 comments Hi, guys. I was just browsing the folders of the group, and I noticed that there is no Paranormal folder for us to post our writing in. Did I just miss it by accident, or do we just not have one?

I don't think we have one, but since it's a subgenre of fantasy I would just put it in the Fantasy folder.

message 325: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) Can we post fanfiction in this group as well, or only work that is entirely our own?

message 326: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
I think we've answered that question a few times--I believe we agreed fanfiction is okay as long as you make it clear that it is not entirely original.

message 327: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) In this topic? Sorry, I didn't see it. ^_^;;

message 328: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

That's okay. :)

message 329: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) Can we have a folder for Horror? I'm making a lot of changes to my story, "Just Like The Rest", and it's no longer Realistic Fiction. I'm not really sure where else it'd go though...

message 330: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Hmmm sure. I feel like we might need a couple more genre folders. Are there any others that people want?

message 331: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) Thrillers, Western, Action/Adventure, Humor?

message 332: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Hmm, I'm not sure there'd be such a high demand for Westerns, haha. I'm also not sure about action/adventure since I feel like that could fall under thriller or sci-fi/fantasy, but I'll try to add a couple of those suggestions. Thanks!

Brigid *Flying Kick-a-pow!* wrote: "Hmmm sure. I feel like we might need a couple more genre folders. Are there any others that people want?"

I'm not sure if we have these...
-dystopia
-animal-centered fiction (think Erin Hunter-ish stuff)
-religious fiction
-disease fiction (although I guess that would just be realistic?)

I can add Dystopia since I imagine a lot of people would make use of that ... I feel like the other ones might be a bit too specific and/or might not be as popular. But thanks. :)

Edit: Never mind, we already have a Dystopia folder.

There's a topic for that here, which apparently no one has used for about a year, but I just added a comment to it to make it a bit easier to find. ;)

Yup, it's here. Looks like it kinda got buried under all the other discussions and hasn't been used in a long time. But feel free to bring it back from the dead!

I know I promised a while ago to organize things a bit more around here so things are easier to find. I will try to do that soon. :)

Thanks! No worries, my fault I didn't think of looking in that category..

Azaria wrote: "We should have a folder for screenwriting, discussions and challenges and such."

Thanks for the suggestion! However, I don't know if there are enough people in this group who write screenplays for us to really need a folder just for screenwriting. For now, I would suggest putting screenplays under whatever genre they fall into (i.e. realistic/contemporary, sci-fi, mystery, etc.). But maybe we should have some kind of "other" folder if people feel one of their pieces doesn't fit into any of the genre folders.

Isaac | 8014 comments Would an autobiographical verse novel go into nonfiction or poetry?

message 344: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Diamond | 190 comments Both I guess, but I think poetry is more accurate.

Hey everyone! I've been really wanting to give some writing feedback lately but I don't want to go give a bunch of feedback on works that people don't really need feedback on , haha. So I was wondering if anyone needs anything read and critiqued! Not sure if this is the right folder but it seems like the beta workshopping system died a bit so I'm just gonna ask here.

Hi Alicia! Yeah, unfortunately the workshopping thread was just not getting any submissions, so I decided to let it die. :P I think we used to have a general "story feedback" thread but it may have been closed. Maybe I'll start up another one.

Edit: Here it is!

message 347: by Halah (new)

Halah (valhalah) | 925 comments Not sure if this is where to ask but.. I am asking everywhere and everyone.. How the HELLO do you start writing a novel?????? I forgot, I haven't written a proper one since 2012. And that was a NaNo draft. And this idea I have is very very important to me and requires research (t'll be historical fiction) and I just don't know where to start...

message 348: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Ha, good question! Well, since you're writing historical fiction, it might help to start with the research. Even just a little Google searching can be useful (as long as the sources you're using look legitimate). And/or get a few books about the time period! Take lots of notes, and write down any story ideas you might have. I'm working on a couple of historical fiction projects, and it's really helped me to take notes of things I've researched, and also to jot down random ideas even if I'm not sure I'll use them.

Personally I like to have some semblance of an outline before I start writing, but I know it's different for every writer. It might also help to take some notes about your characters before you start writing. At some point, though, I think you really just have to throw yourself into it. If you don't know how to start it, you can always jump to a random part in the story that you've already planned/thought about.

message 349: by Isaac (new)

Isaac | 8014 comments In addition to what Brigid said, if you submerge yourself in readings and music and fashion and articles and whatever else from that era, you get a really good feel for it. I tend to write about the 60s a lot because I'm so into 60s history and pop culture, and just watching movies and listening to music and reading things from then really helps make your world building all the better.

True. I started with an outline, and I'm just going to see what happens from there. Thanks!
