I've met Emmie and Emily! And I knew Holden before he was on WWAC, so. Emmie was traveling through on a trip, which was lucky.

BUT YEAH. KANSAS IS GREAT. Apparently the home of many great writers, although they're a bit hard to find.

Can there be a topic for non-fiction, like blogs, where people can advertise writing like that? Jane posted something about her blog in New People, and I'm sure there are other people with blogs and whatnot who want readers.

message 84: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments Okay, I'mma put forward this idea once again because it's on my mind.

Can we add a new facet to the group that focuses on critique? Like, if you like to critique, you can set up a topic where you make requests for certain kinds of pieces.

This would be beneficial to me because I've read a lot of stuff on here recently, and for a lot of it, the disclaimer just doesn't describe enough. I just want a further filter for some of the questionable material I've read. And so it would be great if I could create a topic where I say, "I can read any genre, but I'm strongest in fantasy. If your piece has questionable themes, I will only read it if it shows realistic consequences."

You get the idea.

Think of it like a "help desk" managed by individual members. Make sense?

Lav wrote: "I'm up for that! Want to make one in the random topics folder?"

Hehe. I'm a little scared to. I mean, I don't think there are a ton of hardcore shippers in this group, but it still could cause trouble.

I'm a little confused. Isn't that what the story folders are for? There's a fantasy folder, so if you want to critique fantasy, you can read the stories in that folder. I'm assuming that anyone who posts their story wants critique... I guess I'm just not sure how what you're talking about is different. Can you explain? Sorry if I'm being thick.

message 89: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments @Lav

The way it is set up is like a market -- critics have to sift through a lot of writing to find stuff to read. This system I'm proposing works the other way around -- the writers come to certain critics (determined by the critics' reading preferences) and request to have their piece looked at.

The reason I'm proposing this is so I can have a filter that is a little stronger than the disclaimers posted. Because "contains adult themes" means a ton. I wish I could just tell everyone, "I wanna review this kind of writing" and have people come to me. That way I don't have to wade through so much (for lack of a better word) trash.

message 90: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
Maybe ... I guess my only concern about that is that some people might get swamped with requests. Like, I don't know, if only one person was interested in a certain genre then they'd be expected to critique everything from that genre, if that makes sense. I don't know if I can really explain what I mean. But yeah.

Otherwise, I think it could possibly work. We'd just have to come up with a good system ...

Nah, I think we're fin. I WANT A SHIPPING TOPIC ROAR

message 92: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I kind of feel like that would be taking a step back to the old system we used to have. (The Story Feedback topic.) Very few people ever got feedback by posting in that topic, and it was overwhelming to look at. I feel like it's been a lot easier for me, personally, to find stories I like and want to read with this new system. And if someone wants to critique a certain type of piece, they can look through the topics until they find one that suits them. Everyone who posts their stories here wants critique. It's just a matter of people who want to review writing taking the time to seek out stories that they like reading. I feel like if we changed the system we have now, it would go back to the way it was before, when reading stories felt like so much of an obligation that everyone simply stopped reading stories.

message 93: by Annemarie, hi (new)

Annemarie Carlson (annielawlz) | 3393 comments Mod
I mean I think a lot of people's aren't getting read (myself included) but overall they are getting read more than usual. Yes, I think a part of it is self promotion but I think it's a lot of factors. I think it is going foreword though and what Taylor is proposing is going backwards. I think whatever new things we have should build on this story folder idea in some way.

message 94: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Also, I think that people are more likely to read your story when you read their story...
Like, it's not really a swap system, because you aren't required to read back, obviously, because that never really ends well. But when someone reads my story and leaves a review, it makes me want to read their story and leave a review. And this new system is making it a lot easier for me to read people's stories, which I really like, because I love reading people's work.

message 95: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments Backwards, Annie? I'll try to not be offended.

Now, think of it this way -- the system I've proposed is like it is in the real world. Agents and editors aren't going to line up to read your stuff. Rather, they say, "Here's my slushpile. Add to it as long as you meet my criteria."

Plus, it would motivate me to actually read and critique stuff, knowing that the writer is seriously interested in hearing my feedback. Also, it helps me keep track of when I promise to read something.

But I dunno. If you think that a representation of the real world is a step backward, I guess that's what we have to bend to, you being a moderator and all.

message 96: by Annemarie, hi (new)

Annemarie Carlson (annielawlz) | 3393 comments Mod
Yes, you do have to bend to it.

I'm sorry but we've decided the system you are proposing will not work very well for what we're trying to do. So it's a no go, sorry.

message 97: by Brigid ✩, No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. (new)

Brigid ✩ | 11973 comments Mod
I also think that since the new system is so new, we can't really judge how well it does or doesn't work. Right now I think that there's been an improvement and that in general more people's stories are getting noticed/read. I say we just keep things the way they are for now. If there are any major problems within the coming months, we can talk about improving the system. But, I don't think there are any huge problems right now.

message 98: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 0 comments I'm glad you thought it was worth considering, Holden.

Kaitlyn *I Will Never Let Go* | 44 comments Has anyone else ever had trouble finding a book? Like, you can remember plot details and characters, but not the title or the author? And it drives you rabid-dog crazy? I think maybe we should have a topic where we can post descriptions of books we've read/heard about but don't know the title, and if it seems familiar to anybody, they can recommend the title.
