But this is probably not it because she does not learn cursive."
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think this is it. The characters in the book I remember were human. Thanks for trying though. :D

I've had a lot of people suggest Pippi Longstocking but the book I'm remembering is a picture book, not a chapter book.

"Sticks and stones may break your bones, but names can drive you crazy... Gwendolyn-Joy Morrison-Power thinks her name is beautiful, but sometimes it's just too long. What is she going to do?"

She starts out in kindergarten and they are painting pictures. The teacher tells them to leave a space in the corner for her name but her name won't fit because it is so long.
I believe she goes for swimming lessons and she ends up climbing a tree to hide for the other kids. I'm pretty sure the phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" is used. I'm also pretty sure she doesn't believe it.
At the end of the book, she talks about one of her teachers teaching her Latin, and the phrase "au verso" which means other side or on the back. She is happier with her name at the end of the book because she now has a way to make her name fit. I think she also learns cursive writing at one point.
It is a picture book and the style is kind of similar to the Robert Munsch books.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, that would be really helpful and I'd appreciate it a lot. I've gone to the library and the bookstore and tried googling but I can't find this book anywhere. Hopefully I have better luck here.
