Thinking of House Broken by Sonja Yoerg

message 52: by Beth (last edited Jun 01, 2015 06:24PM) (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Most books in posts 40-51 are approved.

Claire - On Writing by King is what I'm planning on reading for the task as well. :)

Amanda - Two nos and three yeses

Cloud Atlas is an ensemble book. If they were all scientists or engineers I'd say ok. But they're not.

White Trash Zombie is a great book, and I hope you find a task for it, but, having read it, she's really not doing any science, she's moving body parts.

Rocket Boys (Coalwood #1) by Homer Hickam

message 56: by Cat (last edited Jun 02, 2015 06:38AM) (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 3382 comments Hi, am hoping that The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer will be Ok for option 1. Genres include non-fiction & science at the moment (I'll slide over whether non-fiction is appropriate).

Babbage is (historically) an engineer in the Victorian mould, and Ada Lovelace is awesome as a forerunner of today's computer programmers.

Edited to say: just gone back to the approved lists... D'oh! sorry for duplicating.
And am super-excited to be able to read it :)

message 57: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 3382 comments having now read the approved lists, can I see if The Truth would be OK for option 2 - Writing.

William de Worde is a start-up journalist in Ankh-Morpork. not sure he actually makes any money from it though!

message 58: by Marscha (new)

Marscha (mysterymb) | 429 comments Since a forensic anthropologist would work I'm thinkingDéjà Dead, that fits option 1 right?

message 59: by Kim (new)

Kim | 762 comments May I get confirmation that these meet the requirements?

Book 2, option 2 (protagonist is a writer/journalist)

The Imperfectionists

Blackberry Winter

Book 2, option 1 (genre writing) A Writer at War: Vasily Grossman with the Red Army

Thank you.

message 60: by Camilla (last edited Jun 03, 2015 12:18AM) (new)

Camilla | 501 comments Please confirm "Science" for option 1, non-fiction book: Coroner's Journal: Stalking Death in Louisiana.

Please confirm "Writing" for option 2, non-fiction book: Not So Funny When It Happened: The Best of Travel Humor and Misadventure. Thank you!

message 61: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Books in posts 53 - 60 are approved.

message 62: by Elishia (new)

Elishia | 128 comments Hi would these work?
Option 1: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Option 2: S.

message 63: by LouLouReads (new)

LouLouReads | 221 comments Can I check that Busman's Honeymoon is okay for task two? Harriet Vane is a mystery writer, but this is the only one in the series that seems to make mention of her profession in the description.

message 64: by Christine (new)

Christine | 917 comments For Option 1, would The Rosie Effect be acceptable? The protagonist is a geneticist; while this isn't spelled out in the book description, it is mentioned in several reviews such as this one, and his profession IS mentioned in the description of the first book in the series (The Rosie Project).

message 65: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Books in posts 62-64 are approved.

message 66: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Can I get approval for Not Another Bad Date for option 2?
The main character is a fantasy author and the GR description mentions that this is the last installment in a series about four writer friends.
Thanks

Elishia | 128 comments Beth wrote: "Books in posts 62-64 are approved."

Thanks

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1804 comments Would these be ok?

Option 1 Confessions of a GP
A GP is a medical doctor so I'm hoping that's ok.

Option 2 Dear Lupin...Letters to a Wayward Son
A little bit more problematic - it's letters from a father to his son. The GR description says the father is a racing journalist who wrote for a living, but it is not really a biography or memoir.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) | 0 comments Hi Beth! Are you okay with re-reads? I've been wanting to re-read The Help, and it fits for option 2. Thanks!

message 70: by Jennlynn (last edited Jun 06, 2015 01:39PM) (new)

Jennlynn (jennlynn72) | 31 comments For option 1 - does this work?
Alan Turing: The Enigma
Alan Turing was a mathematician, computer scientist, cryptoanalyst. He is also described as a mathematical biologist.

For option 2 - does this work?
A Dark Lure
From the description: "As a frigid winter isolates the ranch, only one person can help Olivia: Cole McDonough, a writer, adventurer, and ranch heir who stirs long-dormant feelings in her. But this time, Olivia’s determination to shut out her past may destroy more than her chance at love. It could cost her her life."

message 71: by Val (new)

Val | 435 comments Can you approve Spinster: Making a Life of One's Own for Option 2, writing?

message 72: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Yes, re-reads are fine. They weren't excluded.

Jennlynn, A Dark Lure does not work. Cole is not the main character and I can't tell from the description if he can be considered a co-main character.

The other books in posts 66-71 are approved.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) | 0 comments Thanks very much!

message 74: by Deedee (last edited Jun 09, 2015 04:33PM) (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments For Option 1, does the novel The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin work? One of the two main characters is Dr. William Haber, a psychiatrist who specializes in dream states. He's described in the novel as an oneirologist.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneirology, Oneirology is a science of the brain. Here's what wiki says:
Current research seeks correlations between dreaming and current knowledge about the functions of the brain, as well as understanding of how the brain works during dreaming as pertains to memory formation and mental disorders. The study of oneirology can be distinguished from dream analysis in that the aim is to quantitatively study the process of dreams instead of analyzing the meaning behind them.

message 75: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Sorry, Deedee, Dr. Haber really doesn't seem to be a protagonist or a co-protagonist based on the description or the reviews.

message 76: by Sandy, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Sandy | 16893 comments Mod
Just checking on The Ghost Fields for option 1. The main character is a forensic archaeologist

message 77: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Yes, that fits.

message 78: by MJ (new)

MJ | 130 comments Opening Doors Carole Noon and Her Dream to Save the Chimps by Gary Ferguson by Gary Ferguson. This book doesn't have any "genres" listed, but it's a biography about Dr. Carole Noon, a primatologist. Will this work for option 1?

Thanks!

message 79: by Mhairi (new)

Mhairi | 348 comments Hi, I'm hoping to get this book approved. It has Science > Natural World as a genre by 9 users, but I'm not sure if that's enough.
Corvus: A Life with Birds
Thanks! :)

message 80: by Sarah (last edited Jun 14, 2015 11:21AM) (new)

Sarah (shiraloo) | 240 comments What about students majoring in writing or science?

For Option 2, I was thinking of Love Story, in which the two main characters are creative writing majors in college.

message 81: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Books in posts 78-80 are approved.

message 82: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments would The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014 by Deborah Blum work for Option 2?

message 83: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandapearl) | 267 comments Hi I'm confused, is Feed a no? The main character is a news journalist. I know the description of the book doesn't say much detail, but I've read this book already and the main character is a news reporter who is chosen to cover a presidential campaign trail. It's an online news source, but a very prominent one and her writing is a main story element of the book. The two secondary characters are also reporters and writers. (I hope this will be approved because I really want to read it, thanks!)

message 84: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Amanda, Feed is a yes. I just missed adding it to the list after noting the books in the post was yes.

Melissa, yes that would work for either option based on the genres.

Oh good! Thanks for clarifying I'm really excited to re-read one of my favorite books!

message 86: by Ashley (new)

Ashley What about if it's not clear that the MC is an author in the description? I read Die for You and it just says successful career - many of the reviews mention that the MC is an author

message 87: by BellaGBear (new)

BellaGBear | 261 comments would this one be good for option 1? The Manhattan Projects, Vol. 3: Building

Just to make sure. It is about a reasch team

message 88: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Yes, Die for You and the Manhattan Projects are approved. Apologies for the delay.

message 89: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments I'm thinking this series would work for option 2. The main protagonist is mystery writer Josephine Tey

An Expert in Murder

message 90: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Yes, An Expert in Murder would work.

Kelli J | 10 comments Would At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator work for Option 1? It's more of a scientific manual of sorts but required reading for me so it'd be sweet if it was! :D

message 94: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Definitely At The Bench works

message 95: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindyd) For Option 2, this book has Writing as part of embedded genres, but it is also a biography/memoir of a writer.

One for the Books One for the Books by Joe Queenan

message 96: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Cindy, Yes it has the genre that works.

message 97: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 205 comments Hi, Just wondering if A House Somewhere Tales of Life Abroad (Lonely Planet Journeys) by Don George would qualify for option #2. It has writing as a main page genre, but it is composed of stories from many writers.

Thanks!

message 98: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) Yes. Writing is a main page genre so it qualifies.
