Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments I often read a book and think, Wow, that would make a great movie. Then I think, But what if they destroyed it? As a die-hard LOTR fan, I put off going to the first movie for two months before I finally gave in.I was terrified they would ruin it for me. And despite the brilliance of Peter Jackson, a lot of good books have been made into horrible movies. Eragon springs to mind. I felt sorry for the author when I saw it. What a travesty.
what are your picks for best and the worst
hollywood adaptations from books?

message 2: by Ethereal Me (new)

Ethereal Me | 4 comments Okay, I read I am Number Four just so I could watch the movie and to be honest UGH! i movie was horrifying while the book is awesome!

I love Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë One of my favorite books and movies!

message 4: by A (new)

I agree 110%! I couldn't believe how much they changed the plot. It seemed like they were trying to make it into a video game plot, but I cannot imagine why.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura I loved both Bridget Jones books. The first Bridget Jones movie was great, the second was beyond awful.

Moneyball - the book was interesting, the movie was fantastic.:)

message 9: by V (new)

V (littlerain) | 6 comments The worst movie adaptation I have ever seen was Eragon. My friends and I would meet up just to throw paper balls at the computer screen.

My favorite adaptation was The Chronicles of Narnia; The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

message 10: by Kyle (last edited Feb 07, 2013 12:17PM) (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) The first book that springs to mind is Timeline. I read the book before watching the movie. When I first saw the film I hated it. It was very different from the book. JUST different however. I realized later it was a good movie too. Not done BADLY, but just differently, since they only had 2 hours to work with.

I'm making that point because more often then not when fans of a book complain about the movie they're only calling it bad because it was DIFFERENT from the book. Perhaps they left some parts out, or melded two characters, or portrayed a character differently.

That is just wrong in my opinion. You can't compare two mediums like that. ESPECIALLY not two VERY different mediums. Now. Having said that. My best and worst.

BEST

- A Song of Ice and Fire. ONLY HBO could have done this series justice. I mean on what other networked could they have said all the obscenities? Showed all the sex? Incest? Gore? This is the most faithful rendition of a book I've ever seen and its GOOD.

- Stardust. It WAS a little different from the book but come on, who could call THAT a bad movie? It was GREAT.

- Wag the Dog. Okay this one WAS way different from its book. But it almost HAD to be. Great movie though!

WORST

- Legend of the Seeker. ABSOLUTELY the top of my list. They took a really good book series (despite the fact that the bare bones of the plot was pretty much ripped off Robert Jordan), The Sword of Truth, and just destroyed it. Its like the old Xena and Hercules shows.... but like... more moronic. HIGHLY disappointed in this show. Although I will say that they absolutely NAILED the actors they chose, aside from the main character. Hahaha.

- Chronicles of Narnia. I dont even know what to say.... if you were a fan of the books you know exactly what Im talking about...

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments I like the point that different does not equal worse. The Princess Bride is a great example; very different but both superb.
Game of Thrones is nearly perfect- great casting!

message 12: by Leora (new)

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments and I like the Stardust movie just a teeny bit more than the book.

message 13: by Sofia (Bookish Wanderess), Founder (new)

Sofia (Bookish Wanderess) (sofia-bookishwanderess) | 221 comments Favorite adaptation: Harry Potter (all of them) and Lord of the Rings.

Worst adaptation: I am number four and probably the twilight movies

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna | 15 comments My favourite adaption would be: 10 things I hate about you. It's loosely adapted, but it counts.

I loved the first four Harry Potter movies, but if you ask me it went downhill from there.

The worst adaption I've ever seen is probably: My Sisters Keeper. I mean come on! They completely botchered the ending!!

message 15: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) I don't generally like contemporary Shakespearean remakes but you're right. 10 Things I Hate About you was excellent.

message 16: by Dominique (new)

I totally agree with you about Rebecca! One of my all time favourite movie adaptations!

message 17: by Leora (new)

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments Just remembered (I try to block it out) the absolute worst was City of Ember. The coolest thing about the book was trying to figure out where they were, and in the movie they TELL YOU 20 seconds in!!! And it just gets worse as the movie goes on.

message 18: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) lol I never read the book but I thought the movie was cute.

message 19: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 8 comments I watched the Harry potter movies before reading the books. This was great because you got more out of the books... Thoughts and more story.

Blood and chocolate was two completely different stories. They must have rewrote everything but the names for the story.

You and me against the world is a new book. No movie yet but when you read it, it is just like watching a movie. I hope if this one makes to the big screen they can reproduce it like the book reads.

message 20: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Thompson | 134 comments the film adaption of a series of unfortunate events wasn't too bad, I actually enjoyed it and was sadden by the fact that it got low ratings :/

yeah I know right!

message 22: by Megan (new)

Megan (BlackStar4ever) | 34 comments My sisters keeper film was just terrible, heart renching, but terrible. Is it really possible to change a book that much?

message 23: by Kayla (new)

Kayla De Leon (kayladeleon) I was really disappointed by the movie adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The film just didn't do the book justice.

And also the film adaptation of Percy Jackson

message 24: by Megan (new)

Megan (BlackStar4ever) | 34 comments I didnt think that the series of unfortunate events was that bad.

message 25: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Thompson | 134 comments Megan wrote: "I didnt think that the series of unfortunate events was that bad."

thats what I was saying I think they did rather good on that movie

I agree completely! Yes sometimes differences are better but this completely ruined the meaning of the book. Tweak some minor details okay but the ending my god!!

On A Series Of unfortunate Events, I think b/c they put three books in one so they didn't really have enough time to fit everything but I liked the casting and I thought it was a cute movie! and yeah percy jackson the movie was ughh haha

message 28: by Nessa (new)

Nessa S (nessascalera) | 26 comments im pissed off at the percy jackson and the olypians mocie and now they are going to make a 39 clues movie (NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!)

message 29: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Rylatt (ellieryl) | 3 comments the hunger games film... oh my god i wanted to stab someone

however, i will be going to see catching fire... and probably mocking jay...

message 30: by Rianne (new)

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) The worst movie adaptations I've seen or come to mind are already mentioned.
First comes to mind is indeed Eragon. I can't even watch it anymore while I start reading the books because I loved the film.

I also hate Harry Potter and the Half blood Prince. I'm a real fan of the books but this one was the worst of all the movies they made.

Best movies, it's kind of difficult I can't remember if there was ever a film the same as the book I've read.. maybe I must say Romeo and Juliet than from Zeffirelli from 1968.

I liked the Hobbit and the Fellowship (The only one I can compare right now)and I also liked Stardust.

message 31: by Teri (new)

Teri | 401 comments Sky wrote: "Okay, I read I am Number Four just so I could watch the movie and to be honest UGH! i movie was horrifying while the book is awesome!"

yeah, I was disappointed with that one, too. It's like they left out things even though there was plenty of time and they changed things that didn't need to be...hate it when that happens...

message 32: by Teri (new)

Teri | 401 comments I think Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightly and Matthew McFayden was very well done...I LOVED the book, and I LOVED the movie...that doesn't happen for me all that often.

message 33: by Jen (new)

Jen Best: Stardust, Game of Thrones, The Virgin Suicides, LotR, The Princess Bride, 10 Things I Hate About You - somebody else already mentioned that one, and then going from that I must add Clueless as it was amazing, yet so very loosely based...

Worst? There are so many. When I really enjoy books I usually avoid seeing the movie in case they destroy it. Um... I did see The Golden Compass however, and I agree that it was just too terrible. I refuse to see Life of Pi as I LOVED the book and can't imagine how they could capture the feel of that story on film.

message 34: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) I, currently reading Coraline, which I only found out the other day is a book, and I have seen the film before and I think that it has captured the magic (and frightfulness) of the book.

message 35: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) That was meant to be 'I'm' not 'I,' haha!

message 36: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) I know I was surprised it was a book too!

I've nearly finished the book and its wonderful, you can read it easily within one sitting. I got it off amazon fairly cheap! I think I'm gonna watch the film when I've finished the book this evening.

message 37: by Dianna (new)

Dianna | 5 comments When I read 'Anna Karenina' book I was amazed but when I saw new adopted movie I was very disappointed. For me it seems like a joke.

I think one of the best movie adaptations is ''Pride and Prejudice'' by Andrew Davies.

message 38: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) Oh I quite liked the Anna Karenina film, however I am yet to read the book, so perhaps my opinion will change. I also purchased 'Android Karenina' today...

message 39: by Rianne (new)

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) @Dianna
So is it a better idea to first watch the movie and then read the book? Because I bought it recently to read it first and then watch the movie.

message 40: by Dianna (new)

Dianna | 5 comments @Rose
Well many people advice me to read the book first then watch the movie but in order not to be disappointed I think it is better to watch movie first :).

message 41: by Rianne (new)

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) @Dianna
Okay I'll do that. I will first watch the movie and read the book afterwatch. I think that's with most things better. To not be dissapointed.

message 42: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (alisabaird2009) | 2 comments one of mime would be The Horse Whisperer. The movie was nothing like the book so much was cut out. Book was way way better.

message 43: by Dianna (new)

Dianna | 5 comments @Rose
Ok cool and will you tell us about your experience afterwards?

OK I won't remember about it anymore :)

message 44: by Rianne (new)

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) @Dianna

I'll do my best!

message 45: by Dianna (new)

Dianna | 5 comments @Rose
Ok Thanks!

message 46: by amanda (new)

amanda (amandapants) i thought the lovely bones was a great adaptation. i enjoyed both!

message 47: by amanda (new)

amanda (amandapants) Rose wrote: "@Dianna

i read the book years ago (loved it), and i really enjoyed the movie. it was really artsy, but i feel like it would be easy to lose the story line in the movie without having read the book first.

message 48: by Rianne (new)

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) @Amanda

I always thought that you better first watch a movie to enjoy the book even better. With these worst movie adaptations. So with Eragon I wasn't dissapointed in the movie because I've not read the book yet. So that's why I thought it might be better to first watch and then read.

message 49: by chvang (last edited Feb 14, 2013 02:13PM) (new)

chvang | 17 comments The best movie adaptation of a book: Fight Club.

The best book adaptation of a movie: Card's novelization of James Cameron's The Abyss.

re: Lovely Bones
That book wrecked me.
Why would you watch the movie?!

message 50: by amanda (new)

amanda (amandapants) I saw the movie before I knew there was a book. The story matter was sad and disturbing, but I like how Sebold writes and I like how they did the movie.
