Kristie | 5942 comments I think they did a great job with the Harry Potter series. Generally, I never think the movie adaptations live up to the books. A couple to note - My Sister's Keeper was not good at all. They missed so much of the background and feeling from the book, not to mention the ending. I am Number Four was very disappointing as well.

Rianne Heartfilia (glindaaaaaa) Well it's 'good' to read that the movie from I am Number Four was disappointing because I didn't want to read the book because of the movie.

The book was much better. Definitely a YA book, but nothing like the movie.

Aura (Sidney Ellwood's protection squad) (moonlighter) | 4 comments The only time I've ever enjoyed a movie more than it's book (that I can recall, that is) was with It's Kind of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. Movie developed the concept much better!

HOLY CRAP THATS THE DUDE WHO WRITE
BE CHILL
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!

Aura (Sidney Ellwood's protection squad) (moonlighter) | 4 comments I haven't read Be Chill but honestly I haven't changed my mind! There's always supposed to be more depth in the book than the movie but in this case it wasn't like that. Only Craig seemed fully developed while the rest of the characters were just hanging in the air. I liked Noelle's story, though. Haha, anyway, opinions vary from reader to reader! :)

Mochaspresso | 27 comments Megan wrote: "My sisters keeper film was just terrible, heart renching, but terrible. Is it really possible to change a book that much?"

That's one book where it is definitely better to see the movie first. The book will ruin the movie for you. I loved that movie and cried like a baby over it. Then, I read the book and discovered how much was changed.

Cora (missteacher333) | 106 comments I thought Misery was a great adaptation. Only one thing that I can remember that was different from the book :-)

message 59: by Susan (new)

Susan (ilove_jla) | 22 comments I really enjoyed reading The Help and I also enjoyed the movie =)

message 60: by Zahrah (new)

Zahrah (zahrahwhy) | 20 comments The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was a pretty awesome adaptation. Even the Hollywood one was pretty good.

And the worst... Hmm. I Am Number Four was pretty atrocious, but I didn't like the book that much either.

message 61: by Zahrah (new)

Zahrah (zahrahwhy) | 20 comments OOH and The Perks of Being a Wallflower was an AWESOME adaptation!

message 62: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia Abboud (anastasiaabboud) Have you seen "Lost in Austen"? It's such a funny spin-off of BBC's production of "Pride and Prejudice." I laugh just thinking about it!

message 63: by Tejashree (new)

Tejashree | 6 comments I like the movie adaptation of 'A walk to remember'
didn't like the movie adaptation of 'The Avatar the last air bender' which was an adaptation of a cartoon series that aired on Nickelodeon.

message 64: by Erin (new)

Erin Seay | 1 comments Best: Harry Potter series.

Worst: I wonder if the filmmakers who produced the movies based on "Congo" and "The Lost World" (Jurassic Park 2) even read the books. Both books were excellent, both movies TERRIBLE. The story wasn't even remotely the same. Total bummer.

message 65: by Laura (new)

Laura | 62 comments Lord of the Rings for sure. I can't believe how well those turned out. And I loved the Hobbit too!

Stardust, Series of Unfortunate Events (so sad they never made more of those movies!), and so many good Jane Austen adaptations! I think Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility may be my favorite though.

I have to disagree with everyone saying Harry Potter though. I liked the movies, but didn't love them. None of the actors (except maybe Snape and Luna) really captured the characters as I'd imagined them. And the last two movies especially fell flat for me. I still can't believe how they managed to turn Dumbledore's death into such a silly scene!

I don't hate the HP movies, but it is my dream that someone will remake them in the future. I'd love to see another take on those wonderful books!

message 66: by William (new)

William | 6 comments Les Miserables!!! They ruined it!!

message 67: by Kim (new)

Kim Graham (kimgraham36) | 24 comments I think that The Green Mile was an amazing adaptation! Stephen King puts so much intricate detail into his writing, and that movie captured the details and emotions expressed so well. It is one of the few movies I can say played on screen as it did in my mind when I read it.

Yes.

message 70: by Leniw (new)

Leniw | 7 comments I haven't seen or read "Timeline" but I think that by far the worst movie adaption ever was "Veronica decides to die". "Life of Pi" on the other hand, although it was a pretty difficult book to make to a movie, accompliced to give you a very similar feeling with the book.

message 71: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3 comments Life of Pi was a great book and a magnificent movie. Everything about it was fantastic and it was visually gorgeous

Winter's Bone the book was average, but the movie was brilliant. Jennifer Lawrence's rise to fame & first Oscar nomination, she was perfect in it. John Hawkes was also very strong.

Bridge to Terabithia The book was alright, but the movie was gorgeous.

The Walking Dead, Compendium 1 is an awesome graphic novel that translated perfectly onto the small screen. The TV show is brilliant & I can't get enough :)

message 72: by Chelsie (new)

Chelsie Motley (chelsiemotley) | 4 comments ATTENTION ALL LOVERS (or even just likers) OF THE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES SERIES!!

Don't. See. The. Damn. Movie.

This was LITERALLY the worst movie-book creation I have ever seen in my whole entire life ever forever. The main characters were annoying, the story plot was confusing, but what really got me was the ENDING!

WHAT. THE. FUCK!

They COMPLETELY changed the ending, completely. To the point where it doesn't make any sense. It made me so angry, I almost walked out of the god damn theater.

And good luck if you try to make a sequel to this piece of crap, cause it was pulling things from all 4 books (and worse, they did it BADLY). I think I already said this, but consider that a reemphasis of jut how bad it was.

If you liked the book, don't go see this movie. It was painful

message 74: by Haley (new)

Haley Has anyone else seen Hugo, or read The Invention of Hugo Cabret? It was a wonderfully cute book, and they made the movie perfectly! The book is as much illustrations as it is text, and the movie did an amazing job capturing those images and putting them on screen without changing them. The cast is perfect and the scenes are perfect, and I highly recommend it!

message 75: by Abby (new)

Abby (bdapineapple) I thought the worst movie adaption would probably have to be Percy Jackson and the Olympains. That was really bad. I watched the movie first and I thought it was amazing...until I read the book and now I hate the movie. That was an amazing series and could have been an amazing film if they followed the book more.

But...Harry Potter was adapted well. It followed the books and I love the movies almost as much as I love the books.

Lauren (originally_elle) | 250 comments has anyone mentioned The Outsiders yet?

I LOVED the book growing up & the movie did ok in not butchering it.

message 77: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenluvssu) I read the outsiders in 7th grade but I never got a chance to watch the movie.

Laura | 62 comments Elle wrote: "has anyone mentioned The Outsiders yet?

lol sometimes I think that's the best we can hope for with movie adaptations - "not butchering it"!

message 79: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (originally_elle) | 250 comments A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints was also a very good adaptation.

The book A Walk to Remember was great but I was very disappointed with the film.

message 80: by Kim (new)

Kim Graham (kimgraham36) | 24 comments Did anyone else hate "The Notebook" as a novel, but love the movie?!

message 81: by chvang (new)

chvang | 17 comments My best friend looks like Ryan Gosling. After that movie came out we all became invisible to girls whenever he was around.

It wasn't until Drive that I forgave Ryan Gosling for that movie.

message 82: by Sheri (new)

Sheri (sheric12) | 6 comments I liked the Harry Potter movies, saw the first 3 movies before reading the books. I enjoyed the movies so much more after reading the books because I couldn't really follow what was going on prior to reading the books. The books filled in the gaps the movies left out.
Liked both Warm bodies book and movie, even though ending in movie is completely different but I understand why they did it, still enjoyable.
I hated the first Twilight movie!
Also was not a big fan of Percy Jackson movie.

message 83: by Alice (new)

Alice | 8 comments Pride and Prejudice , Harry Potter , The Hunger Games =)

message 84: by Leira (new)

Leira Jane (asteri) | 12 comments The Best: Twilight Series, Harry Potter, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
The worst: The time traveler's wife.

message 85: by Francesca (new)

Francesca Caruso | 18 comments Worst adaptations would be I Am Number Four and The Lightning Thief. Both of the movies were good (plus they had some of my fav actors), but compared to the books they weren't very good.

message 86: by Abby (new)

Abby (bdapineapple) Kara wrote: "The worst has to be My Sisters Keeper, they completely changed it around. The best though is probably Perks of Being a Wallflower, that adaptation was amazing."

Yeah...The Perks of Being a Wallflower was adapted pretty well. And your right...My Sisters Keeper was changed around a lot.

message 87: by Arwen (new)

Arwen i thought that LOTR was brilliant, but i thought that they completly Butchered twilight

message 88: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenluvssu) Jack and the Bean stalk was a horrible adaption! Totally different than the book! They even changed the name to Jack the giant slayer!

The last HP was appalling, not to mention how they left SO MUCH of of the last 3-5. I did like the sixth one, though. They did a pretty good job w/ that.

Oh, thank God. I was going to go see it w/ my sister.

message 91: by Laylah (new)

Laylah Liwaru (finiarela) | 19 comments Best: LOTR, Little WomenTime Traveller's Wife
Worst: There are too many to name but to start with I'll just throw out Eragon & Twilight.
My Sister's Keeper and Dear John were okay remakes, but they ended completely different.

message 92: by Angela (new)

Angela Hands-down some of my favorite adaptations would be Stephen King's IT and The Stand, if TV movies count. Admittedly, IT had to be edited due to some rather disturbing moments, but Tim Curry did such a great job as Pennywise. Anne of Green Gables and the...1964 version, I think, of Little Women, with Elizabeth Taylor were also terrific. Megan Follows was great as Anne.

Worst? Where to begin, lol. Phantoms, The Shining (Kubick's version. Admittedly, it is a good movie if you haven't read the book, otherwise meh.), and How to Train Your Dragon immediately come to mind.

message 93: by Martina (new)

Martina Vidret | 13 comments I think that Harry Potter 6 and seven are greaaat books and the movies (both parts) are awful *spoiler for those who didnt read or see harey potter 7: cmon, voldemort death? Disgusting*
The best movie adaptation would be perks of being a wallflower. I loved it even more than I lived the book

I was just going to say these two movies. I cried during these two books. The movies though had the wrong ending and I think that is what made the stories so great. My sisters keeper was very close but I think the lawyer being the Baldwin guy ruined for me. Dear John was close too but the ending made me very angry.

I actually liked that movie. I don't think that one should count as a "book to movie" adaptation because it was always clear that they intended to change the story.

I couldn't agree more. I was going through the conversations to see if anyone would mention it. I only read the first book expecting that they were planning to make four movies. I don't see how they can after that train wreck.

message 100: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 24 comments I agree with a lot of people that mentioned Perks of Being a Wallflower. I enjoyed the book and loved the movie. I thought it was pretty interesting that the author was also the director. I also enjoyed the movie Warm Bodies a little bit more than the book.
