Indie pick : The Cagliostro Chronicles III :Into the Heart of Evil , by Ralph L Angelo Jr. Available @ http://tinyurl.com/cagchronIII
Reader pick: Into the Black.
I feel I have to explain this pick a bit more than just the nomination. I forget if this group does series picks, but this first book has lead to a great military adventure that has surprised me, and delighted. I'm a political scientist/international affairs major by schooling, and this book greatly lacks any political insight or development that enlightens, however it does successfully capture the allure of the space opera military sub-genre and is something worth taking notice of. It's no wonder it has been so highly rated. Not many series that have kept my attention to want to finish, much in the light of Asimov's Foundation series. I've just finished the third book in the series and am looking forward to the fourth.
Did Leviathan Wakes
get picked recently or was it just among the nominations for Reader Pick? I can't remember. If it was, I'll figure out something else. I'm just finally getting my hands on a copy!I'll try Nexus
again for Indie Pick. And ugh I always feel so bad about not knowing what to nominate for the YA Pick. I need to do some real research and figure out what's out there. I might poke around and see if I can come up with something later
READER PICK: nice cover
i hope that book is good to :)Odyssey One is one of my favorite series hope that next books in this universe will be on the same level
and hope this time will be available audio version of the pick
I don't usually nominate because I enjoy seeing what YOU all want to read, but since it's so hard to find a good Young Adult Space Opera and I came across one, I'll nominate one myself:Derelict by L.J. Cohen
@ E.J. - We already read Leviathan's Wake, so maybe you could nominate something else? If you go into our group 'Bookshelf' it will show you what books we've already read as a group.BTW - were you aware your first novel in your Ziva Payan series was nominated Best Sci-Fi of 2015? Still has two more levels of voting to go through before they pick a winner, but you can grab the little 'nominated' seal and use it in your advertising if you want: http://www.efestivalofwords.com/2015-...
@ Rion - that's a ringing endorsement :-) Don't-cha love that feeling of finding a great book series?
Okay ... here's the book cover bling so far:

Ah okay, should have checked the bookshelf. In that case, I'll go ahead and second Into the Black
as Reader Pick. It's been on my to-read shelf for awhile and I'd totally forgotten about it :)
I just looked through the Bookshelf and noted that Peter Hamilton's Commonwealth series hasn't been chosen yet. Since there are 5 in the series, I'm not sure if that qualifies for the reader pick? READER PICK
Pandora's Star

The Mandate of Earth

Commodore Farmer by Gene N. McMurtry"I second Glowgems.
For Indie pick I nominate Nathan Lowell's Quarter Share.
. No real preference for reader's pick but looking forward to see what we come up with.
@ Al P. - Because BOTH of your nominations turn out to be indies, I put Glowgems in as your Indie Pick (you're allowed to nominate ONE in EACH available category). If you want to swap it out for Commodore Farmer, just let me know? They both look great, I just try to keep a bit of balance in the nominations. You can always nominate it next month as they both sound really good :-) Also ... you still have a READER and a YOUNG ADULT FRIENDLY nomination available to you if you think of something later, just come back and drop it into the thread. I couldn't make either of the two books you nominated fit into another category or I would have, so just Glowgems. Thanks!Okay ... here's the updated book cover bling:

Keep 'em coming!!!
INDIE PICK: RED KY DAWNING, from... me!I hope this isn't too tacky, but I'd like to nominate my new book RED SKY DAWNING for the Indie Pick. It's technically the second book in my series, THE MAKO SAGA, but my editors and I really worked hard to keep it accessible for those who didn't read book one (title, MAKO).

READER'S PICK: KENOBI, by John Jackson Miller
It's a shame this book got tossed out with the rest of the Star Wars: EU because it really was a fabulous story. Think THE RIFLEMAN with starships. Great stuff.

Reader Pick: Blindsight; andIndie Pick: Shining Star, which has strong hints of Stars Wars.
YA pick: Err... pass. I haven't seen anything for a while that's grabbed my attention.
For YA pick, we could always go with Tree Cat Wars, the third in the Stephanie Harrington series. I think it's the best of the series.
For indie pick, I second Quarter Share.
For indie pick, I second Quarter Share.

I have to take back my Three Body Problem pick. It's just not all that interesting. Just a big conspiracy theory. I'm nominating Orphanage
My read pick will def. go to Chasm City. Loved that book.Indie: Android Hunters.
I am constantly at battle with myself over nominating indies because I do love E.J and Jon's stuff equally.
As for YA:
I have been eyeballing Derelict for a while. Plus it is sad that its so hard to find YA Space Opera. Most of the time they are on one planet vs some enemy and its more dystopian then anything else.
Okay ... here's the updated book cover bling! Goodreads was acting wonky for me most of last night ... wouldn't put the new covers in for me ... but it seems to be working okay now.@ Ian - BOTM nominations is the one chance you get all month to raise your hand and say 'I wrote a Space Opera book.' That's why I have an Indie Pick ... so go ahead and nominate away :-) And if you don't win this month, just go ahead and toss one in next month as well.
@ Fiannawolf - we have SO MANY awesome authors here :-) It's what makes my job enjoyable as a mod.

If I missed anybody's nomination, holler!
I'd say everyone should nominate their indie book just so I know it exists and can add to to my amazon wishlist. I have categories for it now based on what kind of sci fi it is. Quite nice! Because of that I can add both Mako series and the Exile Empire to my "More Shiny things to buy list."
Amazon and goodreads do a nice job of finding me stuff to love it does help to find more books via month nominations. As if my backlog wasnt crazy enough. Ill stop reading things when I am dead but even then I just might haunt a library to keep going in the afterlife.

*blushing* ha ha. Seriously though, thank you!
I really like the earlier suggestion of Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton, but I think I will wait until next month so I can suggest it at as a series. It was fantastic and shouldn't be missed if you enjoy space opera. My reader pick is Machine World by B.V. Larson. Mainly because I have already read the first 3 and I just picked up the fourth one and am excited to start it soon.
My indie pick this time around is Terms of Enlistment by Marko Kloos. I've read all three in the series and loved it, each book in that series gets better, so hoping to share some of the happiness that series brought me.
Obviously, I have the military sci-fi bug this last month or so...need to work it out...
I don't have any good ideas about young adult as usual. I think the previous votes for Derelict sound good, so that's my ya pick.
And here's another update :-) [*so pretty, so pretty, look at all those preciousss book covers Smeagol...*]
@ MorningLightMountain - does any sci-fi fan every not have the military sci-fi bug? The question is, are we SCIENTISTS in the war, SOLDIERS in the war, or SPECTATORS in the war. But most Space Opera tends to have an overarching conflict that's military in some way. :-)

THANK YOU!!! :)
Okay ... sorry so late doing tabulations today but my darling teenage daughter decided to use my computer to hop onto a Dr. Who fan site and downloaded a G-D TROJAN!!! Many, many hours and going hat-in-hand to my MIT-educated E.E. (thank god) husband, we seem to have it off. So now it's time to tabulate the winners.First, updated cover bling:

It's that time of the month when we nominate what books we'd like to read as a group during June, and then on (ish) June 1st your Borg Queen will run the different categories through the Random.org randomizer and we'll have some new books to read.
Categories open for nomination this month include:
READER PICK: Dead trees is where it's at with the Reader Pick. Nominate your favorite mass market book. This category is for people who prefer to be able to walk into the nearest bookstore to read in paper and/or prefer to get their books from the local library. Must be available in libraries and at least 3 major bookstores, both digital and print. No Kindle-Unlimited locked books! We're a global community.
INDIE PICK: This is the cutting edge of what's new and different in the sci-fi / space opera genre. This category is for the little guys, the author-maverick who goes it all alone without a marketing budget except their own efforts. K.U. books are okay. Authors can nominate their own books because we use Random.org to decide.
YOUNG ADULT FRIENDLY PICK: y'all's sci-fi recommendations are slowly terraforming my teenager's bookshelf and we've got a nice little foothold amongst the sparkly vampires of almost half a shelf :-) Recommend some great reads so we can read and discuss them with the young people in our lives without looking old. :-) Must be a science fiction book with a 'space' component such as an alien invasion or trip into space. No earthbound dystopia unless it has a space/alien component. Must have been published since 1997 (no 'classics' please ... my teen throws them back in my face). Must star a 12 to 17 year old protagonist (i.e., not 'kid turns 18 and joins the military' like Starship Troopers).
Drop your nominations into the thread below and I'll post the pretty book-bling covers as I transfer them into my spreadsheet.
And for our SERIES PICK: we're reading Book 3 of the Spectras Arise trilogy by Tammy Salyer, Contract of War, so put that puppy on inter-library loan!
Be epic!
