SOLVED. YA fiction single parent-child relationship in Texas [s]

I read this YA fiction book back in 2006 or 2008. I think it was from 1991, if I remember correctly. It was about a young white boy in Texas. But I don't remember the actual plot. He mowed lawns for money for a Latino man;his mother was a single parent. I think it might have been some sort of mystery story, but I am having trouble remembering. I think the author was an American male.
