Lara (laraiswrite) So today marks day 1 of the readalong! I'm so excited and scared all at once. Haha. We're going to be trying to keep a pace of one or two chapters per day but no worries if you fall behind or are already ahead of the crowd. Just be mindful of spoilers in both cases. =)

Depending on how big and/or chaotic this topic gets, I may end up making new topics to sort of break the book up into nice, neat little sections- because I'm just a little OCD like that. Haha. But we'll cross that bridge if/when we get there. For now just enjoy yourselves, your book, and the friendly banter herein!

Why don't we start this of by talking a bit about our favorite characters? For me, my absolute favorite is Daenerys. I mean, she has been through so much and (especially in the last book) she's made some significant character growth. I really love how strong and independent she is while still seeming, you know, human. =p I also love Tyrion! He is so witty and cunning! I am so excited to see what happens to him in this book. =] Another favorite is Arya. I just can't help but admire the little girl for all she's managed to live through and her enormous amount of spunk. Haha. I've also been rooting for Jon Snow but after the last book I feel like I like him a little less. I don't know. He just seemed very whiny towards the end of book three. If that changes in this book I will be very happy. Lastly, I'm not sure if I'd consider him a favorite per say, but I am completely fascinated by Jaqen H'ghar! (by the by, does anyone know how his name is pronounced?) The mystery of who he is is just too much for me to resist. Lol.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same as you Lara!
Daenerys is my absolute favourite because she is so young yet so wise and fair. Also, she is the mother of effing dragons, I mean c'mon, no one can top that!
Tyrion is just so hilarious, he's got a heart buried somewhere too, he isn't a heartless lannister. To an extent, I like Jaime, only because he protected Brienne and has some redeeming features at least!
Arya I love, she is the perfect tomboy and as for Jon, I really like him but I understand what you mean. His chapters are long, slow and really quite depressing!!!
I believe its pronounced Jack-en Hag-ar according to the TV show!

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Yup to all of the above. It has always been exciting for me to read Arya, Daenyrys and Tyrion chapters. Especially for Arya, she has been through so much. And I could almost feel that hole in her heart :p I think Jon Snow is a pretty weak character at first, but as I read along, much had happened and I'm actually looking forward to how he develops. The same goes for Samwell and Stannis I think. I'm excited to see what happens to these characters. Jaime had become more interesting after his hand got chopped off. As for Brienne, yes I like her but her plotline seemed boring recently. Hopefully it picks up

Lara (laraiswrite) Oh my gosh! I completely forgot about Samwell! He made some huge character development at the end of the last book too! Ooo! I'm dying to find out what GRRM has in mind for him now! Not to mention Bran. Oh my gosh, the end of book three is all coming back to me suddenly in great detail. Haha.
So I practically soared through the first two chapters today! I always forget how all-consuming these books can be. GRRM just has a magical way with words, I guess! =]

message 6: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Yes Bran too. *Spoiler alert for those who haven't seen season 4 of GoT and who haven't read beyond book 4*

I was teary-eyed when he reached the 3-eyed crow, and when he was told you will never walk again, but you will fly...

this is not a spoiler but just a guess... I think Bran is gonna be able to warg Drogon.

M00plays (thebookmoo) | 26 comments Mod
I'm loving the introduction of 'behind the scenes' characters like, the captain of the guard and the prophet etc...

M00plays (thebookmoo) | 26 comments Mod
Oooo, that's an interesting theory for Bran! Team up with the Targaryens maybe?

Lara (laraiswrite) Well, I was exhausted and in a lot of pain yesterday so was barely able to read one chapter before I needed to go to sleep. Lol. But hopefully today I'll be able to catch up. I'm going to be heading out to our family cabin for a few days this evening tho so you guys might not hear from me much while I'm gone. No wifi up there anymore sadly. =(
I'm really into the whole background characters pov so far! It's very interesting to see the affects of the Blackwater battle and such through the eyes of those who weren't directly involved. For instance, I was taken aback (but not entirely surprised) that Tywin apparently saw fit to claim the Blackwater victory as his own instead of Tyrion's. So glad Tyrion got to kill him on the toilet- it was a very fitting ending for a man who apparently poops gold. Lol.
I'm still getting through chapter 3, with Hotah and Doran Martell so I'll try to update on that before I leave tonight.
There is something I wanted to share with you all tho. It's a parody in honor of Red Nose Day. My friend just shared it with me this morning and it made me laugh so much! Coldplay, Game of Thrones: the Musical. It's seriously so hilarious! Enjoy!

Update:
Alright, I'm caught up from yesterday now. I should be able to read another two chapters before the day is over. So I'm very intrigued by Doran Martell. I mean, I like that he's not brash like his nieces but still, he apparently is Tywin's ally and that is worrisome. I wonder what he'll do when word of Tywin's death circulates. It was also pretty neat reading from Cersei's pov. She's in over her head now, I think. Lol.

John Favorite character... That's sort of a hard one for me. I learned early on not to get attached to any one in this series. When Ned was killed it was a huge blow for me! I really enjoy reading Jon Snows chapters though. A few of my buddies and I have a theory about Jon Snow and can't wait to see if it's true. I also like how Jamie has developed into more of a deep character and has seen the error of his past!

message 11: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Doran Martell is a favorite character as well. Lots of layers with this one. I'm excited for you Lara, read on!

Jon Snow theory: I have one as well. Book 1 Ned flashback to Lyana's dying moments gave some clues. If anybody watches the show, there was a scene in episode 5 where they hinted at this. Excited to see how his plot plays out...

Im a little behind from our 2 chapters a day goal! Im on Arya's first chapter where she is just arriving in Braavos i believe!
I like Doran Martell but like you Lara, i was worried about his mention of an alliance with Tywin Lannister!
Cersei has lost daddy and doesn't know what to do. She refuses to believe that he would sleep with a whore, oh how much she does not know!

I know how you feel about attachment to characters John. George R R Martin is ruthless at killing those you love :( Oooo, whats your theory?
Yeah, i really like Jaime now, i cant say the same about his other half...

Hmmm... I'm trying to think back to that episode, it seems so long ago! I hope it all goes well for Jon Snow, since he knows nothing apparently :')

message 13: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John I believe Jon is Ned's nephew not his bastard son. The relationship between Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Strak was consensual. Jon was the offspring between the two and Lyanna died during child birth swearing Ned to secrecy as to protect Jon since he was of the Targaryen blood line and rightful heir to Westros.

Lara (laraiswrite) Hey all! Hopping on during a rare free moment between work and fishing! Haha. So I'm also a couple chapters behind now. I didn't get a chance to read at all yesterday. But I'm hoping I catch up either today or tomorrow- probably more likely tomorrow since we'll be on the road home after noon. Road trips make for good reading time. Hehe. Anyway! I'm totally loving what I'm reading so far. I'm super excited for Arya! Given what Jaqen did so well for her at Harrenhall, I'm guessing she's going to be learning to be an assassin of sorts. Maybe she'll even run into Jaqen again! So cool!!! Jaime is really growing on me now- slowly. I'm a little disappointed that he's in love with Cersei still but what can ya do? Haha. At least he sees her for the horrible person she is now. And speaking of the Devil's spawn, I can not stand reading from Cersei's point of view. I'm hoping she gets bludgeoned to death or something here soon. Lol. Brienne's making some interesting developements! I hope she and Jaime work out somehow. =] Despite all the awesome things going on, I am dying to know what's going on with Daenerys and Tyrion! And you guys are totally right about getting attached to characters in this series. Sadly, I just can't let my favs go since they grew on me before it really sank in that no one was safe from GRRM's wrath. Haha. Also, those are some interesting theories about Jon! I was just talking about his parentage with my cousin the other day. He thinks he's the son of Ned Stark and a Targaryen. I'm still on the fence. Either way, I hope he came from a Targaryen! Hehe. Well, I gotta get going. Work to do, sadly! Talk to you guys later!

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Has anyone reached any chapters about the ironmen? What do you guys think of what's happening in the Iron Islands? Yey or nay?

M00plays (thebookmoo) | 26 comments Mod
That's an interesting theory John! It would be an unusual family photo, Daenerys and Jon!

I second Cersei's bludgeoning! Ive just realised this book has no Daenerys or Tyrion chapters! I love them the most but i am enjoying Jaime and Arya's chapters.

I really dislike the ironborn. That drowned man is so creepy! What do you all think of him?

message 18: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John I'm never a fan of the religious fanatical. To many atrocities are committed in the name of God or gods.
I sort of like the Ironborn. They seem like a people that have lost their way. They used to adhere to a strict and crude form of society but after their attempt of a rebellion they have lost their place it seems in Westros. I'm interested where they fall in at the end of the book. Wether they carve out a larger kingdom for themselves or they are beaten down and become another pawn in another's attempt at the throne.

message 19: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) I was so upset about that when my cousin said there were no updates for Daenerys and Tyrion in this book. I was like, "I have to wait for book five?! Seriously?!" You just know George did that on purpose. Lol. As for the Ironborn, I've only read that first chapter with the prophet concerning them so far. But even that glimpse made me realize that the Iron Islands are a lot bigger than I initially thought. I'm not sure how I feel about them yet but I am anxious to read more of them.

Ok, I'm going to try to catch up now. Hehe.

message 20: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Agree about the Iron Island. I didn't realise how big it is, and so many houses in there as well. Excited to see how the plot goes.

message 21: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John Have any of you read or picked up The untold history of Westeros?

message 22: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) I'm saving all the ASOIAF extras for after I get through book 5. I don't want to accidentally stumble upon any spoilers. Haha. I'm going to get that World of Ice and Fire book and also I'll be preordering the series' prequel GRRM is getting published this year. What's it called... Ugh... A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! Lol. Is the World of Ice and Fire the one that you were referring to, John?

So I didn't get any farther yet today. The rain cleared up over here and I could just hear the salmon in the lake calling my name.

message 23: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John Yes that is the one! I got a copy as a Christmas gift but I'm going to wait till I finish the 5th book till I read it. The illustrations are beautiful and it's cool to see an artists take on some of the castles.

M00plays (thebookmoo) | 26 comments Mod
I may have to hint about this book to the boyfriend...anniversary coming up soon :')

message 25: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) When I first saw A World of Ice and Fire in the bookstore I fangirled so hard. Haha. But I refused to open it because, you know... spoilers. =p I put it on my Elfster Christmas list last year. Didn't get it for Christmas or my birthday later on sadly but its still on there so maybe someone'll get it for me this year! If all else fails, I'm not opposed to spending $25 to get it myself. Lol.

Anywho! I counted my progress so far and I'm dismayed to say I'm 5 chapters behind the 2 chapters per day pace. =( Probably won't be able to catch up today and tomorrow because I have to work but I'm planning on spending Saturday and probably Sunday too cooped up in my room reading.

**Spoilers Abound!** Just in case you're even further behind than I am. =p

How fascinating that Pod made another appearance! I was sure we had heard the last of him after Tyrion was sentenced to death and thrown in prison. But of course, he would be tailing someone bigger and more clever than him to find Sansa. Maybe he'll learn a few things if Brienne decides to let him stick around! Although, I can't say Brienne would actually do that. She seems to like being alone and I don't really blame her.

Sansa! She's definitely growing up. Haha. I have to say, I fully expected Petyr would be trying to take advantage of her in her first chapter but I was thankfully proved wrong. That being said, I'm still nervous for her. She's definitely in a very precarious position tho at least it kind of looks like Cersei isn't going to try to tell everyone Tyrion is dead. Sansa is safe from that tragic situation for now. God, I wanted Littlefinger to be one of the good guys so badly! Maybe there's hope yet. =p

So I was really intrigued by Asha! I still can't decide if I like her or not. I mean, she's ambitious and doesn't let anyone walk all over her which are qualities that I think every woman should have. Lol. She's certainly a better woman than Cersei. Honestly, I'm really hoping her plan for the kingsmoot is successful. =] But I'm also wondering what affect that'll have on the rest of Westeros. I can see her joining the ranks of potential Iron Throne candidates and I feel she'd be a tough nut for Daenerys to crack. Then again... Dany has dragons... Haha.

Cersei is... well, still Cersei. I can't believe she lit up the Tower of the Hand with wildfire. I mean, I understand she's grieving for her son and father and angry with Tyrion and Jaime and the situation with the Highgardens. Honestly, I think she's just angry that she got left a terrible mess to clean up after Tywin died. She's feeling overwhelmed and that's not good for her queenly ambitions so she's tending to overcorrect and be overly dramatic in her panic to get control of it all. Still hoping she comes to a terrible end. Lol.

I'm up to the first Soiled Knight chapter now. Really curious who this one is. I mean, the title alone generates so many questions! Hopefully I'll have time to read that chapter at the very least today. It'd be even better if I could manage to get two or three in. Hehe.

Well, I gotta get going to work now. How's it going for the rest of you?

message 26: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments I just got the History of Westeros book, and looking forward to read chapters about how the dragons got extinct.

I find Cersei's chapters in book 4 quite comedic in a way. She's mad with delusions, seriously.

Sansa chapters, for me is quite weak in this book. Hopefully more character development later on.

message 27: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) Ooo that is something I've been dying to know more about. Everytime any Targaryen gets mentioned while I read, I make special note of everything said concerning them. They seem to be very epic people. Even Viserys, who was a close second with Joffrey for worst human in the world, had a completely epic end. Lol.

Funny, I think I recall Jaime or someone saying Cersei was becoming as mad as Mad King Aerys not too long ago. It's probably true. Maybe losing her mind would be better than the bludgeoning I've been wishing for her. Haha.

And you're right about Sansa, so far as I've read anyway. I was really hoping to see her step out of her box after the whole ordeal with Lysa trying to kill her. I think she would have if Petyr weren't constantly there to suppress her. Sad days. =( I'd really love to see her start standing up for herself. Poor thing.

message 28: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) Is it just me or do you all struggle with remembering the ridiculous amount of names of knights and lords and ladies and barmen and nieces and nephews and cousins and freakin chipmunks etc etc etc that GRRM keeps throwing about? I mean, holy crap. I love his writing style but is it necessary to name every single person who makes even the tiniest of appearances? It drives me crazy because I'm afraid they're going to come up again later and I won't remember them. Lol.

I've been busy too, plus I'm finding this one quite slow :(

message 34: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments I saw online that there's a way to read book 4 & 5 so that it paces better. Here's the suggestion in the link:

http://boiledleather.com/post/2454321...

I'm already almost done with book 5 so, I guess too late for me to be using this guide. But for some people here who just started with book 4, maybe you guys can try it out. I heard it makes both books way better.

message 35: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John I agree moo. This book by far is the slowest one yet. Jamie's chapters seem to have no real reason or substance to them. Cersi's are the same each time, her just slowly losing her grasp on reality and the kingdom.

The Maid of Tarths journey is always the same it seems, just plodding along yet never really making any progress. What few chapters Sam has are always the same, the old master is sick and old and Gilly just cries.

I wish Anya had more chapters in this book, she seems to be the only on that is really doing anything.

message 36: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) It is a lot slower paced in this book but still not as bad as the first half of A Storm of Swords. That book was such torture to get through. Lol. I'm finding I'm still enjoying the book even though it is as you said, John. Maybe GRRM is just trying to get his readers to know more of his characters before book 5? Still tho, no book in this series could ever be as painful to read as A Storm of Swords. That book! *"O happy dagger!" ~grabs dagger~ "This is thy sheath," ~stabs self~ "there rust, and let me die."* =p
Haha. Anyway, just in case we forgot to mention, Mel and I are doing a readathon this week so we've put A Feast for Crows down. I managed to get all caught up with the 2 chapters a day before the readathon started on the first... so I'm 24 chapters in now. We'll be picking it back up by the 8th. In the meantime, we can still discuss up to that point!

Spoilers below

I for one can't wait to see what comes of Arya! And also, what crawled up Jon Snow's butt and died?? I mean, I get that he's probably overwhelmed by his new duties but still. Did he have to be such a bungholio when he sent Sam away with the maester, Gilly, and the baby? By the by, I had a feeling that baby thing happened! So terrible! I hope Gilly can learn to live with it! ='(

message 37: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments I feel it's the right thing to do, sending Samwell to the Citadel to be a maester! I thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to see what the training will be like to become a maester. Here's a wild theory: while learning and reading all the books at the Citadel, I think Sam will figure out how to make Valyrian steel, and save the day!

message 38: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) That would be awesome!! I really want Sam to come out well in this series. I mean, he's just treated so badly even after he manages to kill a White Walker and make it back safely to the Wall with Gilly and her baby. There are a lot of people that I would wish a happy ending for in this series but if it came down to only choosing one, I'd pick Sam. He deserves a happy ending and I feel like training to become a maester will eventually lead to that. Hopefully. Oh my gosh... George is going to murder him, isn't he? Gah, I don't want to know! *hides head in arms* Lol.

Lara (laraiswrite) I did see that and couldn't be more excited. Lol. I've been watching the show but only up until the current book I'm on. I think I stopped at season 3 episode 3 last time. That was probably playing it really safe but I'd much rather get spoiled for the tv show than the books. Once I finish this book I'll feel ok to watch a bit more of the show. =p do you think the new writer(s) will still be consulting and with GRRM tho? That would make sense to me but you never know with Hollywood. Lol.

message 46: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John I don't hold much of an expectation for the show or its future episodes. Hollywood's ability to interpretative fine literature into visual media is pretty pathetic.

message 47: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) Lol! I agree, John. I learned to keep my expectations low when it comes to book-to-movie/tv adaptations. Especially after watching Insurgent. I was so mad I spent the extra $3 on 3D for that one.

message 48: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments I had always enjoyed them separately. I try to enjoy the show and the books independent of each other. It's interesting how they interpret plotlines differently in the show and in the books. There are some instances I enjoy a character more in the show that in the books. Sansa for example, I feel is a more interesting character in the show than in the book. Look at it as a parallel dimension. Hahahah. The advantage of having GRRM out of the show is that... he can finally finish the rest of the books!!! I completely support this move. (-:

message 49: by Lara (last edited Jun 16, 2015 07:54PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara (laraiswrite) Seriously, Tin! I fully support any notion that gets GRRM writing his books again. ^_^

Well, I thought I'd divide the book discussions into chapter sections but the more I thought about it the more I realized it would be really difficult to do that. I for one don't particularly want to have to count the amount of chapters I've read every time I want to post something. Lol. Anyway, we'll just stick with this. It seems to be serving us well. =p

So how's it going reading-wise? I just finished the first Cat of the Canals chapter today. Totally thought that was going to end up being someone else but I'm really glad I was wrong. Lol. I gotta say, guys, I'm a little bit worried for Dany now! I don't like that the Crow's Eye is wanting to make her his wife and it makes me even more nervous that Victarion is considering getting revenge on Euron for what he did to him and his wife years before. I would like to be able to reassure myself that everything will be ok but... this is GRRM we're talking about. I mean... Haha. I'm so scared! =[ Also, I kept puzzling over everyone claiming that the Hound was about terrorizing the land when I very clearly remember him dying when Arya left him in the last book. I had a strong feeling it couldn't have been him but then a part of me would wonder if maybe one of the red priests brought him back. I was so relived when we found out the truth. Cersei just seems to be spiraling further and further into her paranoia. I have to admit though, some of the things she's been doing have been pretty clever. She definitely understands how to manipulate people but I think her ignorance about what it takes to run and rule a kingdom is going to be her ultimate downfall. Allowing the Faith to reinstate their own little militia is definitely going to come back to bite her in the ass. Lol. There is a lot going on in this book! Its definitely not as action packed as the previous ones but I'm still really enjoying it. I can't believe I only have 238(ish) pages left!

message 50: by Tin (new)

Tin Manasan | 21 comments Cats of the Canals chapter, gave me "the feels" knowing that Arya is near the docks where ships from The Wall arrives. That door is open to her, to just go to Jon Snow. Cersei chapters, as usual, delusions of grandeur. I feel sorry for her at this point, she has huge daddy issues.
