Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments The last lines were "And then it began to snow." It's a children's book and the characters are the heroine and her little brother. One day it began to snow and snow. School was canceled and everyone stayed indoors for days but then one day the heroine and brother took some shoveling equipment (shovel? spoon?) and began to dig from their door or window and crawled out on hands and knees (they were sneaking out to go play). The snow was above their house. They kept digging and ended up looking at a window of a nearby snow-buried house, there was a dead body in there, frozen from the cold, they were scared but decided to keep digging, they dug and dug until they reached the top. At the top, it's just a vast open blanket of white and the snow had stopped falling. All the houses were buried from the snow. They thought everyone was dead but people started popping from under the snow, I think they were just children though. They were scared because they were all alone and they were happy that the snow had finally stopped falling but then as they were cheering the sun hid and it began to snow again.

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments I don't know if this was categorized as horror but I remember having nightmares of the dead body and the snow. The snow had a malevolent feeling about it. The writing was pretty rich in detail and had almost a poetic feel about it.. the writing drew you in.

Ceecee (qquiet) | 17 comments Could this possibly be a short story? How long is it?

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments It's possible but I don't know.. I recollect the sensation that this was a quick read but I read fast and it has been so many years it's a blur how long or short this was.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Geez, if I had kids I'm not sure I'd want them to read this.

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments lol when I was young I read everything I got my hands on. I read this nine plus years ago. It scared me because this was one of the first stories I read that had a dead body that nature (the cold) had killed and nature seemed sinister.. That unnerved me but I don't regret reading this. It was a rich, detailed, intriguing read. It opened my imagination and also exposed me more to the natural world and reality. Yes, I got exposed young that people could die from the cold and natural causes but being exposed like that just made me a more developed person growing up, or I would like to think so anyway. That's why people in poverty and homeless people and underdeveloped nations have so many losses because warmth or shelter isn't available and that can be fatal. I don't know how to explain it comprehensively to others but the books I read, I don't believe I have any regrets in choosing what I've read. People either learn through self-experience or by integrating other people's knowledge and experience into their own. That's why we read textbooks. Books that you choose to read outside of scholastic guidance are just like textbooks. Sometimes you just have to look deeper to see what it is you're supposed to learn and it might not be true for everyone, the knowledge you may encounter, and sometimes (for me, at least) it's not what is inside the book, the story line, its the quality of the writing that you can learn from or take up. And then of course, sometimes we're stubborn and resistant to absorbing knowledge from the books we have termed 'just for fun' books.

Chris The Story Reading Ape (chrisgr) Search Goodreads for Whiteout, it's not a child's book but the closing words you gave are on the last page

Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares II: More Tales to Make You Scream has a short story called "Snow" that is about some kids who wish that it would snow forever. Ring any bells?

Actually.. that sounds incredibly correct. I'm going to check this book out from my library and see if it is. The title "Snow" even sounds familiar. It's definitely ringing bells I just have to make sure. thanks for helping Andria!

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments You know.. now that I think about it.. I think I recognize the cover..?

Let us know if this IS it Goge, so that we can shelve the book and put this down into Solved.

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 256 comments Will do. I need to go by the library first.

Hi Cheryl, I think this book is a short story in Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares II More Tales to Make You Scream but I haven't been able to find that book in my library and in my state. I need to go browse more some bookstores. So right now this is 'possibly solved'.

I will see if I can track down a copy through my library, too. Now I want to read the story as well. :)

Goge, I wasn't able to get my hands on a copy of the Bruce Coville book, so I did some digging around and found out that the short story "Snow," (from Book of Nightmares II) was written by Al Sarrantonio, and is also included in his short story collection: Toybox, which my library has. I just read the story and it's EXACTLY as you described. I would be happy to scan and email you a copy of the story, if you want to send me your email in a private message. :)
