Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Someone asked a while ago when Season 3 of "Sherlock" was going to air. The US airdate has been announced. Starting on PBS on January 19th.

The exact UK airdate hasn't been announced because the BBC doesn't makes airdate announcements until about 2 weeks before the date. In all probability it will be around the time of the US airdate or slightly before.

All intervention will be strenuously fought against.

Simona | 1453 comments I will ask to the library to find for me "The Mammouth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Novels" an anthology by Mike Ashley, I haven't been able to find the link but I'm sure it does exist because it's on the library's thesaurus :)

Mike Ashley's anthologies are always good. I have found many new authors through these. And the Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures is a good one.

message 170: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I havent read any of the stories (yet) but I do have the complete set packed away with the rest of my amazing books I can't read right now. However I think I've seen every tv show, miniseries & movie of Sherlock Holmes. Lol, the Disney version "the great mouse detective" is my fave Disney movie :) BBC version is very good w/ Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman. In the states, Elementary is on its second season. Love Johnny Lee Miller but I'm not sold on Lucy Liu being "Joan" Watson.

message 171: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Allie, I can't stand Lucy Liu as "Joan" Watson. Making Watson female is taking it too far from canon for me to be comfortable with.

"Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is my absolute favourite Holmes and Watson pairing.

I have read all of Conan Doyle's originals and many, many short stories and novels by other writers. Sherlock Holmes was the first fictional character to have a massive fan base, and also the first fan fiction ever written. :D

message 172: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Yes, that ones probably the best. I love their little bromance lol.

When I first saw "elementary" and Watson was a girl, I was like whaaaaaaatttt????? But I've kept watching because I think J.L. Miller is fantastic as Sherlock. Really love the guy who plays Mycroft too.

I will read them all one day. I swear!

Jonny Lee Miller is a good actor. I saw him recently acting opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the National Theatre's Frankenstein.

His Sherlock is good, but as I don't like the female Watson I don't watch. Also, when one appalling script writer gave him the line "Deduction isn't everything." I lost it. That's the whole point of the Sherlock Holmes stories - the deductions are EVERYTHING.

I'm not keen on the porn star mo their Mycroft sports. :p

message 174: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Hmmm... clearly I have not been paying attention. Never heard that.

Haha, I just like the actor (Mycroft) and other stuff he's been in.

First season. They ran it in a trailer. I nearly had apoplexy.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Allie wrote: "That Frankenstein sounds so good!!!"

It was brilliant. They reversed the roles. One would be Victor and the other the Creature, then the next night each played the opposite role. I saw both versions.

Love Rhys Ifans but I think they're messing with the Mycroft character too. Last episode I saw with Mycroft had him coming across as a bad guy at the end, I think. It was a bit iffy. :)

The recent adaptations of Mycroft are interesting. Mycroft is being seen AS the British government, when in the books he simply held a unique, but powerful, position within it.

The change came in the 1970's with the movie "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" in which Christopher Lee's Mycroft is much more than a government functionary, and the Diogenes Club is a front for the British Secret Service.

Mark Gatiss and Steve Moffat, the creator's of "Sherlock" freely admit that their Mycroft is based in part on Christopher Lee's portrayal. Both men include the movie amongst their favourites.

And "Elementary" is borrowing from the "Sherlock" mythos rather than the Conan Doyle canon.

I think they may be going beyond it. I mean, seriously, he's a restaurant owner?? And possibly mixed up with Moriarty??

I liked the Christopher Lee portrayal myself.

What??? That...that...that... *speechless*

Here, children, is another reason I don't watch Elementary!!!!

Christopher Lee was my favourite Mycroft... until Mark Gatiss came along in "Sherlock". I adore Mark's portrayal of Sherlock's big brother. :)

message 182: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Ah, I thought you might not know how much they had changed Mycroft. I swear the restaurant owner bit realy threw me for a loop and (view spoiler). Did you know Moriarty is (view spoiler)! :)

The spoilers are only for those who aren't caught up. I don't want to ruin anything for those who still want to watch the show and haven't yet!

message 183: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Dec 09, 2013 04:39PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I didn't know the first, but did know the second. I heard the screams from other Sherlockians when that was revealed at the end of season 1. I'd given up even attempting to watch by that point.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Okay someone recommended Sherlock in Love: A Novel to me. I found a copy in an opportunity shop today.

Portia, I think it was your recommendation? Not sure.

message 195: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments On the Smithsonian channel they've been playing a show called How Sherlock Changed The World. There are a few forensic scientists who explain how Arthur Conan Doyle used Sherlock to advance investigative techniques, kind of a la Jules Verne with transportation and other sci-fi stuff. Quite interesting.

message 196: by Portia (new)

Portia My recommendation was How Sherlock Changed the World bec Dominic Cumberbatch clips are shown and the cemetery from which one of the murder victims was exhumed is the one where my family is buried. When the shot of the entrance to the graveyard came on, Spouse was saying, "Is that ,,,?" as the narrator was saying "... Mount Olivet Cemetery." Wierd to see my family headstone on PBS.

message 197: by Portia (new)

Portia The forensics are fascinating. Joseph Bell was a genius.

His Last Vow, not Bow.

I've heard. I was NOT expecting the ending. I was told about (to be fair I asked. I wanted to know. Television induced anxiety isn't my favourite thing).

I have pre-ordered the dvds. I won't be watching it on tv here, because it is going to start next weekend on Sunday night, with adverts added the hour and a half will be stretched to 2 and half hours and I get up at 5AM. Not practical for me.
