Let me know how you like it; it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Sharon Eudy Neufeld (goodreadscomsharonud) I am reading "The Second Confession" by Rex Stout. If you have never read the Nero Wolfe mysteries you should give them a try. They are a melding of the English drawing room mystery and the American hard-boiled detective. Nero Wolfe hardly ever leaves his luxurious brownstone in New York City which he has furnished with everything he loves, fine food, beer, a world-class chef, 10,000 exotic orchids comfortable chairs and an elevator. Archie Goodwin is his eyes and ears and gathers the information which enables Wolfe to charge his clients exorbitant fees of $10,000 for a few days work. I'm re-reading it because I love mystery, luxury, puzzles, food and NYC in the thiirties.

I second that recommendation. The main personalities are such fun to witness in their banter and quirkiness. How anyone puts up with Nero Wolfe is a mystery in itself...but his genius draws admiration.

That's near impossible to say!

How about The League of Frightened Men, Some Buried Caesar, Too Many Cooks, Death of a Doxy, Plot It Yourself, and The Doorbell Rang.

I like the ones where Fritz and Nero argue about the preparation of food. I like the ones where the female of the species flummoxes Nero. I like the ones where I learn more about the obsession with orchids. I like the ones where Archie "goes dancing". I don't know, each one has something different.

I loved Nero Wolfe! I read every book I could find when I was in my late teens/early twenties - a long time ago. I thought I was the only one who liked them! I have not read any for years and years though.

Chrissie Completed Tightrope: Six Centuries of a Jewish Dynasty
My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
It is a family history about a Jewish family living near Lvov, Ukraine.

Moving on to River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze. I am determined to read the books I have purchased, or at least most of them. Some I cannot figure out why I ever bought them, but this one is one of the few remaining that looks really good!

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Generally the speed at which I make it thru a book is a strong indicator of how much I'm liking the book. So I steadily made my way thru Stories I Only Tell My Friends. Liked but didn't love. It was decent, nothing stellar. Not my normal kind of read.

Immediately on to next book -- The Last Chinese Chef. I put a big dent in it last night. Means I'm a happy reader :)

Julia (juliace) I am now reading Calculated In Death (In Death, #36) by J.D. Robb by J.D. Robb because I can't find an "A" book I like for the alphabet challenge (I'm still looking) and because the Forgotten Classics for the March challenge hasn't started yet.

Hi Rusalka - I LOVE these books. I have all of them. I'm a huge Nora Roberts fan, but in my opinion the writing is much different in this series under the JD Robb pseudonym.

Eve Dallas, a homicide detective in 2060 NYC, is the protagonist in the series, but each book does bring back several other main characters including her husband Rourke (and even though he is a fictional character it must be said about Rourke - HUBBA HUBBA!!).
Eve is a VERY strong, confident, independent woman, but again in my opinion hides a softer more senstive side (you need to look deep for it but it is there!)
You can see that in each book her relationships with the supporting cast (for want of a better word) does evolve and grow. Her relationship w/ Summerset (the "butler") is a kick!!
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a strong take charge woman as the main character.

I think I may have gotten confused. I went back in the thread and see that I commented on Shirleys post of "The Silent Girl" by Tess Gerritsen.
That is also a very good series, although in my opinion the first 4 books of the series are the best. The last couple put out are ok, but no comparisson (sp), again in my opinion.
The main characters are Jane Rizzoli, a homicide detective, and Maura Isles, a medical examiner. I have not seen the TV series so I can't compare to the books. I know people who have read the books and say the series does not follow the books at all.
The main characters start out very strong in the first couple of books, but the last few not so much. Jane is still ok, but Maura seems to be losing her edge.
I do still like the books and will continue to follow the series.
In my opinion though the "In Death" series by JD Robb is a MUCH better series.

message 182: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments No no I was talking about JD Robb. I had no idea it was Nora Roberts in disguise. Mind you I only learnt about Nora Roberts from the Rainbow challenge last year...

I'm definitely watching the episode tonight then!! Will be very interesting to see literary snobs with a guilty habit of paranormal romance reading a Nora Roberts in disguise book.

Rusalka, I have read all of the R & I books and I agree about the 1st 4 being the best! I watch the TV show, because I love the women playing the characters, but it is correct, asside from the names, the TV show is NOTHING like the books!!!!

I have not read any of the JD Robb stories.

Awesome. I bought it the other day. It's calling my name.

I also have a very soft spot for HG Wells after watching Warehouse 13 where she was a she instead of a he and played by the hot girl from the BBC show Hustle.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments AmyK wrote: "Rusalka, do you get to watch it live?"

Alas no. It's usually streamed at about 3pm my time and I unfortunately am still in the position where I have to work. And my work has nothing to do with books. So if I can get a job where I can justify watching online shows about books, I will be a very happy camper. I nearly applied for a librarian job the other day.

But it gets me through the last Wednesday of the month knowing that it'll be online when I get home.

Lol, I can guess how you felt about The Sense of an Ending JMom! I am just over halfway through and I am quite divided about it so far. There are things about it that I really like but I am also finding bits of it to be quite frustrating. It all rests on the last half.

Jmom and Lisa..... With
The Sense of an Ending I thought I disliked it until I was finished. It was really a strange reading experience for me. I thought for sure I would end up giving it a low rating. After reading the final words and closing the book, I pondered. Then, all of a sudden, I decided I liked the book! Soooooooo very strange!

Hurrah! My missing library book has been found. After ringing round where we'd been in the last week it's turned up. I managed to leave it at friends we stayed with Saturday night. I know how too, it was in my handbag (yes, i have a massive handbag just so i can fit a book in it), but I emptied it so i could put my high heels in, as we were going to a posh dinner - and walking to the station. Ahhh, so that's where the book went. Anyway, to be returned Saturday.

Now starting The Remains of the Day, my alphabet letter I.
