Sorry for the delay due to illness and general lack of energy caused by illness, but finally here is: the Brothers Grimm Challenge.

The Challenge will run from 1 February 2013 – 30 April 2013.
I know that is short notice, but I don’t think that will be much of a problem since we have a lot of time for just a couple of tasks and you don’t have to plan much.

We have had a nomination round so we knew which fairytales to use. The final results are:
5 votes: * Rapunzel, * Rumpelstiltskin
4 votes: * Cinderella, *Hansel and Grethel
3 votes: * Little Red Cap, * The Golden Goose
2 votes: *Six Swans, * Sleeping beauty, * Snow-white. * The Goose Girl, * The Three Spinners, * The Wolf and the seven little goats
1 vote: * The frog prince, * The Wishing table, the gold ass and the cudgel in the sack, * Tom Thumb, * Town Musicians of Bremen

Carolien and I felt it would be a shame to leave some fairytales out. So we decided to use them all in the following way: There are 5 groups of fairytales depending on how many votes they got. You have to pick one of every group to use and read a book that is connected to that fairytale in some way. The connection has to be in the story.
For example if you pick Snow-white from the group of stories that got 2 votes you can read a book where an apple plays a big part, or with dwarves in it, or about a wicked witch, or about an orphan, etc. To complete your task you will also have to read the story Snow-white.

We also have two further tasks. So that makes 7 tasks in total.

The tasks are:
1) pick a story that got 5 votes (* Rapunzel, * Rumpelstiltskin), read that story and read a book that in it’s own storyline has a connection to it.
2) pick a story that got 4 votes (* Cinderella, *Hansel and Grethel), read that story and read a book that in it’s own storyline has a connection to it.
3) pick a story that got 3 votes (* Little Red Cap, * The Golden Goose), read that story and read a book that in it’s own storyline has a connection to it.
4) pick a story that got 2 votes (*Six Swans, * Sleeping beauty, * Snow-white. * The Goose Girl, * The Three Spinners, * The Wolf and the seven little goats), read that story and read a book that in it’s own storyline has a connection to it.
5) pick a story that got 1 vote (* The frog prince, * The Wishing table, the gold ass and the cudgel in the sack, * Tom Thumb, * Town Musicians of Bremen), read that story and read a book that in it’s own storyline has a connection to it.
6) read 10 stories by the Brothers Grimm that were previously unknown to you and let us know which ones you read.
7) read the 6 Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl that are based on fairytales. They are: Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and the seven dwarves, Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, The three Little Pigs. They can be found on the internet here: http://www.funny-poems.biz/roald_dahl...

When you update that you have finished a task please do so in the following manner: I have completed task 0 by reading the fairytale X and the book Y. The connection is Z.
I will only update your score in the scoreboard if you have updated like this.
This topic can be used both for your planning and updating.

Lauren Smith I've been neglecting this challenge, but I've read 3 books that can be used:

- Carrie by Stephen King for task 2 (Cinderella) Carrie White is scorned by her mother and her peers, but then she gets to go to the prom with one of the most popular, handsome boys in school

- Paprika by Yasutaka Tsutsui for task 4 (Sleeping Beauty) The main character is a stunningly beautiful "dream detective" and spends a lot of time inside people's dreams. There are times in the novel where she doesn't know if she's awake or asleep, and when a man who loves her comes to wake her up from a deep sleep that she cannot otherwise escape.

Thanks! I want to try and read all the Grimm stories this year as well.

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Do you like them, or do you just want to know about them? I find them really weird and rather flat - interesting to know about, but not pleasurable to read.

message 40: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) | 1332 comments Mod
I find them quite monotonous, very similar stories. I didn't realise there were so many so now I want to read them all so I know I haven't missed any good ones. I'm glad I have the year to do it as I get bored with the monotony.

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yes, and some of them are very disturbing (violent, amoral, etc.), in a bland kind of way. I much prefer what contemporary writers do with the stories.

Congrats!

I think I am going to steal your idea and use that book for that task too!

The stories were written with a reason and a message. We aren't used to stories with a reason anymore. We read stories just for fun not to learn. That often makes stories with a message a bit boring. Especially if you read loads of them at one time. So spread them out read a couple each week and you will like them more.

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I don't know... I like to learn things from novels, but I actually found that some of the stories seemed to have no reason or lesson, unless the point was just to illustrate how horribly unfair and tragic life can be.

message 44: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Which of the stories are you talking about? Maybe you just missed the point?

message 45: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith It's been a while since I read my Grimm collection (and I found it quite forgettable), but I skimmed over the stories and found two of the kind I mean:
"The Death of the Hen" - I understand that the hen dies for being greedy, but why does everyone else die too?
"The Straw, the Coal and the Bean" - so the story explains why beans have seams, but what about the poor straw and coal? They did nothing wrong.

Many of the stories seem appallingly unfair - people die or are horribly punished for relatively small things. Or they do horrible things and are rewarded or portrayed as the good guys.
