McClure | 4 comments I read this book in the late 80's or early 90's. I was young when I read it, pre-teen, but reading at a college level. It is something that my librarian recommended and was a YA, coming of age, survival story. I feel like it was an older book, maybe written in the 50's or 60's. I vaguely recall an old, hard cover, maybe a golden yellow color. I feel like it was a one word title, but could be really wrong there.
The gist of the story was that this young girl is in the jungle with her father and his team of anthropologists (maybe) and somehow becomes separated from them or they die from some sort of disease that she does not contract...
She must survive on her own in harsh conditions. Then I remember she encounters an aboriginal tribe and they are cannibals??? Am I just making this all up, or has anyone else read this book??

McClure | 4 comments I'm also remembering illustrations of the Amazon river and the tributaries that feed into it because at some point the girl realizes that she must travel the river if she is to ever find civilization.

"A remarkable story of a 13 year old girl who is lost in the wilds of the upper Amazon River area who is able to survive on her wits."

McClure | 4 comments Oh my goodness! Lisa, I think that may be it!! The cover doesn't look familiar, but the copy I read was a beat-up, library, hard cover copy. I'm currently trying to find it on Amazon to see if I can read a few pages.

McClure | 4 comments Yes, Lisa, I do believe you nailed it! Thank you so, so much. It's been 20-some years since I read this book and in the last few years I have thought of it often. I can't wait to read it again!

Lisa (med0ra) | 433 comments You're welcome. It rang a bell with me as I felt I'd solved it before. I added it to my TBR.
