A Father owes his king taxes and to punish him the king orders him to allow 2 scotsmen to marry his daughters. He has 3 daughters he shows twins and another, and a step daughter he tries to hide. He relies on her to keep up with the everything. When the two scotsmen show (friends) the stable man says his horses are like the rest. He has some up front but the best one is hidden in the back where no one can see. The one scotman chooses the stepdaughter (youngest) child. When they are riding back to the Mens keeps they are set upon. The older sister hides behind the younger step sister. Both men chastise her. The story is mainly about the step-sister. She felt she needed to earn love. If I remember I read this in the 90's
