That's how I felt toward the middle. It wraps up well, but I'm also not sure I want to continue the series.

If you think Lies of Locke Lamora is slow then you should probably skip the Sword pick that came after that - Tiguana. Give it a few chapters, but I think you will find it even slower.

Jared (jaredforshey) | 32 comments I'm re-reading Shadow and Claw and really getting a lot out of it this time around. The clues really are in there!

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Just finished Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - phew! Really fast paced thriller, and randomly mentions the last book I read, The Martian Chronicles. My review is here. Now I think I'll start in on reading the February pick!

message 55: by Rejo (new)

Rejo Reta (rejo_reta) | 19 comments Reading The Ghost Brigades right now before starting Bridge of Birds. Might pick up Vamphyri because I apparently hope it'll be good. If I have time, I might also start The Operators.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Onto chapter 6 of this month's S&L pick!
Also still listening to Technomancer (a supernatural thriller-type book) and reading Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut. Sadly, the latter really isn't sucking me in (surprising, too). I think it's that it's SO light and fluffy and bite size-able, I don't feel a need to go back immediately.

message 57: by Ally (new)

Ally I just started Clutch (I am Just Junco #1) and...I may already abandon it. It has all these elements I love--aliens, heroine with a sniper rifle, interesting version of future America--but the book is just all over the place.

I'm also working through a dance with dragons and being generally worried over what will happen to my favorites as per usual

Abby | 2 comments Hey everyone! Do we do group reads in this category? I've been wanting to read this book Eden Eden by David Holley that my friends keep yapping about.

message 59: by Jason (new)

Jason (jdplusg) I recently found this group and am a little late to the party for the group pick. I also have quite the backlog of books on my list to read this year.

Currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora and enjoying it quite a bit. I will finally be delving into the Dark Tower and reading The Gunslinger. When I make it through those two, it will be on to The Blinding Knife.

Starting on my re read of the next book in the Malzan series Deadhouse Gates

Let's see here, been slacking on updates, mostly because I've been slacking on reviews.

I finished listening to The Waste Lands earlier this week (my review), and I have continued my Dark Tower re-read audio tour with Wizard and Glass.

I have also finished The Name of the Wind, which didn't quite live up the hype for me, but was still very enjoyable (my review).

Finally getting around to reading A Dance With Dragons and I'll be starting Deadhouse Gates this weekend for our Malazan Fallen group read

I was reading the 2012 February thread for some reason, glad to be back in the present day. Although it did remind me I want to read Lies Of Locke Lamora lol

I have just finished Grave Peril Jim Butcher, which was excellent. You get a feel for the rest of the series with this one, its going to be excellent.

Just finished the first book of Wool. Its just a taster but it made me want to carry on with the rest of the series, which is always good.

I started Black Prism also and im not getting along with it, not sure if I will lem.

message 71: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 314 comments Reading One Corpse Too Many but should finish this weekend. Not sure what will be next though, maybe time for some Sci-Fi.

message 72: by Laura (new)

Laura (conundrum44) | 109 comments I'm starting Sweet Myth-Tery of Life. I read it years ago and then realized I totally forgot the series when the next one finally came out. So I've slowly been re-reading the series before getting to the (not any longer) new books.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 9 comments Just finished Cold Days by the amazing Jim Butcher it was so hard to put down, almost didn't watch my 49ers on Sunday, because I wanted to read.
On the waiting list for Ever After by Kim Harrison and as with all the Hollows novels I am sure it will be outstanding.
So.....in the meantime I am reading some free Amazon picks on my Kindle. Currently The 19 Dragons by S.M. Reine. I am almost done, and am enjoying it a lot.

message 75: by PatrickC2010 (new)

PatrickC2010 | 7 comments Just finished reading Old Man's War, Ghost Brigades, and The Last Colony. Wonderful series, I highly recommend reading all three.
The lesser of the three would be the first book, Old Man's War with it's weak depictions of combat. As a combat veteran I was disappointed with how it was portrayed as a lethal game of paintball.
The Ghost Brigades was the highlight of the series, asking great questions about what it means to be human, what is a soul or identity. Really felt like Scalzi had a lot too say with that book.
In conclusion, very much worth the reader's time if you like intelligent sci-fi with a deeper philosophical meaning.

message 76: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished The Lord of the Rings -- yep, still my favorite book ever -- and decided Tales from the Perilous Realm seemed like a fine choice for a follow-up.

message 77: by David Sven (new)

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Finished Bridge of Birds. Love it.
My Review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now to continue on with my reread of King's Dark Tower series with The Waste Lands

My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I loved Red Country. If you've read The Heroes and enjoyed both of also those try Best Served Cold. I've devoured everything Joe has written and am patiently(?) waiting for his next one. :)

Now I'm reading "Empire State" by Adam Christopher on a friend's recommendation and am enjoying it.

I don't read the monthly pick because I've read many of the things on the list already. Or they don't grab me but I'm always up for recommendations. I was in Barnes & Nobles the other day and picked up one of Patrick Rothfuss books but he spent the first three pages talking about ... silence. That didn't grab me so I set it down. I did get Scalzi's Redshirts and we'll see how that is.

I just finished In Hero Years I'm Dead by Mike Stackpole and loved it. I'm also waiting for the next Crown Colonies book. He says that's up next on his list. :)

I haven't read The Last Colony yet, but I just finished The Ghost Brigades. I was glad that I like The Ghost Brigades more than Old Man's War. I thought the first novel was fantastic and appreciated that Scalzi moved away from the first person POV in the follow-up. It definitely made the story better. Added to that is the take on individuality, which gave the sequel more depth than the first novel.

Kurt Rocourt (krocourt) | 53 comments I'm almost done with Myths to live by from Joseph Campbell. Later on I'll start Mona Lisa Overdrive by Wiiliam Gibson.

message 82: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 20 comments Just finished The Daylight War by Peter V. Brett. I recommend it. It's not as good as The Warded Man, but better than The Desert Spear. It hasn't been released in print or ebook, but it's been available from Audible for a while.

I don't have another book lined up so if you have a book you are championing, let me know.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm downloading it right now. I had no idea that Audible had it already. It's early. I love this series. Guess what I'm starting to listen to tomorrow?

This weekend, I finished reading God's War and listening to Defending Jacob. I should be finishing reading John Dies at the End this week unless I get distracted by a new shiny.

message 85: by John (new)

John (agni4lisva) | 362 comments My primary reading goal for 2013 is to read 2 books a month. I managed to finish The Hobbit and Old Mans War in January so I am on track so far.

This month I hope to read The Bridge of Birds and also Cloud Atlas, as the film of the latter is released in the UK later this month. I may try to squeeze in an audio book if I can find the time.

I am in catch up mode with some of the books that I have missed from the calendar.

I really liked Cloud Atlas (loved the book, liked the movie), I had no idea it took so long to be released in the UK!

Reading through Blood and Betrayal now. Lindsay Buroker's prose is refreshing, as usual.

Yes I wasn't very impressed when I found that out. Still it gave me something else to look forward to. I read the first few chapters back when the group read the book, and it was very intriguing. I am looking forward to properly getting into it this later this month :-)

Brian McClellan (brianmcclellan) I recently read Prince of Thorns and King of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. They were shorter than I expected (I read each one in a single evening). Enjoyed them both very much.
