Page Numbers

Do you have an eBook you are reading for the Tower Teams Reading Challenge that needs a page number? Do you see a discrepancy? Or need a conversion? Or some other question about pages?

Post it here.

~Melissa~ Posted both here and on ebook thread for this challenge - wasn't sure which place you would want it☺
here is the book I'm reading ebook version of Desires Unleashed (Knights of the Darkness Chronicles, #1) by D.N. Simmons
FYI- GR page states paperback version has 298 pages

Okeydoke and thanks!
I think the author did a "revision" and "re-released" it as there are comments that it had tons of typos, lol. I'm assuming the first was self published maybe...

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments My edition from The Eight by Katherine Neville has no page info. I'm looking at it right now, and it has 570 pages.

I'm only start reading it tomorrow, for the BOM reading, and I don't mind to switch to other edition, but that cover is sooooo pretty :)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Here's one from me - I read the ebook but as you can see, the page numbers are all over the board:

Genesis by Bernard Beckett

message 13: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ I assumed that Rock Chick Redemption (Rock Chick, #3) by Kristen Ashley as well as the rest of the books in this series have enough pages as I think they all have over 1000 ebook pages.

If not I need to remove this one from my shelves and then not count in the future.

True. So, I'm going to leave that one alone. Unless there is a specific book/edition you want me to change.

It's more of a "does it count or doesn't it." Maybe it was answered elsewhere but what is the rule if there is a "print" edition that qualifies but the ebook doesn't.

FYI - I elected not to have used it but was wondering how to handle these situations.

message 17: by Zara's Retreat (new)

Zara's Retreat 1. With Kindle books is there a conversion formula that allows us to see whether an ebook fulfills the 170 page rule? If so, what is it?

2. Also a number of kindle books I've recently downloaded have a page number specified with the comment "contains real page numbers". Does this mean that these numbers would be the actual numbers found in the 'real' book or do we take our guide from the GRs stipulation of pages?

If there is an edition that shows a high enough page count - and it is NOT a LARGE PRINT book - then, I say, "Yes, it can count."

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Zara wrote: "1. With Kindle books is there a conversion formula that allows us to see whether an ebook fulfills the 170 page rule? If so, what is it?"

Zara, in answer to your first question, I'm using this from techtips.salon.com "This gives a rough rule of thumb of one page in print equating to 2KB."

Also, this:

Maybe this blogsite will help you a bit: The Daring Novelist.

Guess I should have had the cut off at 160 pages.

Science Fiction Writers of America
Short fiction: under 7,500 words
Novelette: 7,500-17,500 words
Novella: 17,500-40,000 words
Novel: 40,000 words and up

Short Mystery Fiction Society
Flash story: up to 1000 words
Short short story: 1001 - 4000 words
Long short story: 4001-8000 words
Novelette: 8001-17,500 words

Of course, now you have to find an eBook publisher who gives you word count.

Yes, from blogs I have read I believe this is a new feature the iBook publishers are using - mainly due to readers request. (So many of us are in book clubs. We need page number references!)

Sorry, I'm ignorant on what you mean by "GRs stipulation of pages."

What I mean by GRs stipulation of pages is the pages quoted when one clicks on a book title to get more information on the book. I'm a GR Librarian myself and I never even thought to do a search there. Silly me. Thanks for the help.

Our Honored Dead (Stephanie Chalice #4) by Lawrence Kelter

Amazon says 264 pages but I thought we couldn't use Amazon as a source so I don't know where else to check.

And I swear there was a Kindle edition listed the other day because I have in my notes 387KB.

Thanks!

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Thanks for the link - I can't tell you how many hours I spent last night looking for this guidance.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I am also reading the Rock Chick series, I added the two that have book pages on the record, but there are still 5 that don't have it on the ebook version. I don't use my ereader very often, but where do I find KB to convert or do I try to go off the Kindle version when I have the Smashwords version?

I would like to add the page numbers for these so that I can count them as well, they are all as long as the other two books which already have page counts over 170. I am a Goodreads librarian, so if someone can help explain how to determine this I can add counts to the editions. I have only done it if I have the specific book in my hand with page numbers because that is easy.

message 33: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Turtlecollector wrote: "...where do I find KB to convert or do I try to go off the Kindle version when I have the Smashwords version?"

Turtlecollector, KB refers to the file size. I'm not sure what type of computer you have, but I have a PC. Without going to the Amazon Kindle store (which would be the easiest, since the information is right the under Product Detail), I go into:
My computer
My C drive
User folder
Lisa folder
My Documents
My Kindle Content
Since my smashwords books go there also, it is the same process, though really, the words posted on their website are more accurate.

Does this help?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Okay I found the word count on smashwords website, but how do I determine page count. I went to the blog you posted and used that estimate of 250 words/page but the numbers came out quite a bit higher than the kindle version listed on GR. Is there a better way to determine pg count or can I add these numbers to the editions?

Turtlecollector, why don't you tell me the particulars: what book you are talking about, the smashwords website word count, and your conversion, and what Kindle has listed.

I am a member of that group and our books for that challenge have to be at least 100 pages long. The list they provide is for ebooks without a print edition. All the books on that list has been checked for page number verification from reputable sources such as amazon, the publisher, author website etc ☺

That is a very competitive challenge so page numbers for books is necessary for fairness to all players.

♥Robin♥, Amazon has the paperback of Rock Chick Redemption (Rock Chick, #3) by Kristen Ashley as 672 pages. If you can show me - or rather, give me the hyperlink - where on the author's web page that this is different, I'll be glad to change it.

I'm just NOT seeing that, ladies. All I see is 672 pages on that book on all editions. (Well, I saw 670 on one, but I changed it.) Is it possible that someone has that book posted with the author's name spelled slightly different and listed as only 100 pages?

Rock Chick Redemption (Rock Chick, #3) by Kristen Ashley

Kindle pages according to GR:
Rock Chick Renegade 411
Rock Chick Revenge 595
Rock Chick Reckoning 561
Rock Chick Regret 607

Using word count according to Smashwords.com and dividing by 250 (which the blog you listed says is pretty common):
Rock Chick Renegade 147810/250=591
Rock Chick Revenge 171400/250=685
Rock Chick Reckoning 157170/250=628
Rock Chick Regret 170050/250=680

Thanks, Turtlecollector.

I checked those books through Ingram and Worldcat and they are NOT listed.

There are many books out there, like the classics, that are posted with different page numbers, depending on the version and publisher.

With eBooks, this is going to be especially true, and very hard to get an agreement. There are multiple blogs on this topic, as it is a hot debate.

As far as the blog I listed, that is a guideline for us to use when there are no page numbers, but a member wants to know if a book counts. As you can see, it leans generously toward the higher page number side.

Personally, though GRs tells us we can NOT use Amazon or Smashwords as a source, if a book is published through Amazon or Smashwords, I find this very frustrating.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Should I not add these books to my shelf? Or, can I assume they are more than 170 pages since I read the Smashwords version, and all the other versions are well over 170 pages?
