Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Our February 2013 wine/book club selection is Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 183 comments Excellent choice! I see it as an opportunity to take a break from Infinite Jest (that glass is half empty). What happened to your gourd, Jason?

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments My phallic vegetable has been retired.

You're not loving Infinite Jest, huh? I like it but it is taking me forever. At this rate I won't be done before the spring thaw!

Christine Galvin-Combet | 11 comments Arg! I've been out of the loop and am reading this now. I look forward to discussing it in a month or so and promise not to spoil it for those who haven't read it :-)

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments If you're reading it now then you're right on time!

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 183 comments I'm liking Infinite Jest BUT it's easy to put down and not so easy to pick up again. I hope your gourd was given a proper burial (phallic? I never noticed!)

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 183 comments I started reading this yesterday. After a slow start the momentum really picks-up. I found the track reenactments underwhelming, except for the descriptions of Nazi Germany, but once the war begins it is riveting. I want to keep reading but I can't keep my eyes open...

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I'm going to clone myself a second pair of eyes so I can read twice as fast and catch up.

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 183 comments Jason, help! I've copied and pasted my review all over the place. My cyber skills are seriously deficient...

Katherine | 96 comments Excellent review Gary, I wasn't going to read this one, but I'll take another look at it now. Ta :)

Melanie | 56 comments I loved this book!! But I am a sucker for true stories. I agree it had a slow start when he was a little boy but picked up quickly and even more when war started. I think this is one of my quickest reads even though it's quite long. BUT all you kindle readers out there, you only have to get to 75% since the last 25% is acknowledgements, references, ect. I made my dad read it and he read it in one weekend.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments I'm glad to hear this, Melanie. I am SO BEHIND with my reading that I'm pleased to know how short this one is.

Daniel | 16 comments I read this book a while back but it was AMAZING! It did a great job of showing the hardships of those who were captured by the Japanese.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Guys! I finally read this book!

I really liked it. I thought the epilogue was kinda hastily assembled and seemed a little scatter-y, but I loved the storytelling. Dude had it rough.

I think it would have been "happier" to end the story at the time Zamperini made it home and saw his family again, but I'm glad for Hillenbrand's decision to keep it going, as there was much more to his life (obviously), which certainly didn't end just because the war did.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments Hi, Jason!

Oh, hey, what's up?

Not much, what's new with you?

Oh, nothing, really. Just talking to myself because Wine Club is dead as a doornail.

It's dead?

It sure seems to be.

Oh, well, do you realize you sound like a retard talking to yourself this way?

That's okay. Nobody will know...because the group is dead.

Gary the Bookworm (garmct) | 183 comments Unbroken it's not.

Jason (ancatdubh2) | 912 comments So this 4 month hold thing is probably not a bad idea.
