A key focus of 'RISING OF A DEAD MOON' is inequality and the plight of the disadvantaged. The setting is historical, but sadly many of the issues remain - in many parts of society. Usha, an Indian girl is forced into an arranged marriage, then widowed. She escapes a widow's burning and flees to Africa to find the father who has abandoned her. Set against a backdrop of Indian Indenture, the book examines the appalling treatment of ethnic minorities, and is a journey of self discovery.

What struck me particularly when researching for the book was how one group people (the white colonials) could treat another set of people (the enslaved Indian workers) with such cruelty. Indenture was a dressed-up form of slavery. The promises of land to those who completed their work tenure were invariably reneged upon. Usha's journey is filled with sadness, in parts uplifting, although I wish I could say that I found all the answers to my concerns.
