I am so happy to talk to someone else who's read it recently. I felt really strange after reading. I really liked it but also just felt very empty and tired(?) after I read it. Recently, I was reviewing a piece for my college literary magazine that was also written from the perspective of a stalker and I definitely used the Collector as a reference point for the style. I think the book was really fascinating but I cannot say I found it good or bad... my reaction was just so conflicted. I really was interested in its comments on art and the strange consideration of women as captured butterflies for this man, how he did not fully appreciate them or see them as living things but merely things of beauty for him to obsess over. I am not sure...What did you think? That was such a long winded response. I had a lot of mixed feelings about the book. (obviously well written I am a fan of Fowles).

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) I would have to agree with you, I felt really tired after reading it but I still enjoyed it immensely and found myself sneaking away to read it during free times. It did feel like a chore, at times, to digest certain paragraphs. I love the uniqueness of the story line especially when you put it in context with the era it was written during.

It's been noted as the "inspiration" book for many serial killers/abducters which adds an even more interesting spin for me; I'm fascinated by the sociology behind serial killers. I thought it was interesting how he makes you feel conflicted about the characters. Almost makes you become empathetic towards the captor - like you actually have to stop and remind yourself that he kidnapped this girl!

Elaina Definitely. Yes, I found myself reading it whenever I could but it was tiring to read, which I think is intentional. What you said about the serial killers is really fascinating. It's a little bit like Sorrows of Young Werther which inspired a number of suicides when it first came out and even later over the years. Glad you liked it. I need to get to the Magus eventually.

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) Ohh, I hadn't previously heard of Sorrows of Young Werther! Now I have something new to research, haha. :)
