The chapter headings certainly would clarify things. Good point.

Nina | 6069 comments Still into "The Girl on the Train," and so far it is a page turner. Can't wait to read "Who done it."

message 5153: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I hope to find out tomight after watching, "Godford Park," on Netflix. I watched it long ago but remember little about it. Last night watched, "My Old Lady," and wonder what any goodreaders think if any have seen it. I haven't decided if I liked it.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Haven't seen "My Old Lady" but it sounds interesting. Thanks for mentioning it.

Nina | 6069 comments Maggie Smith aa The Old Lady.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm ordering the DVD of "My Old Lady" from Netflix. Can't go wrong with Maggie Smith! :)

message 5157: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I once saw Maggie Smith and joan Ploughright on the London stage. When they first came on the stage even before the play started they got a standing ovation.

I'm not surprised, Nina. Those two are a powerful combination!

message 5159: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - I was surprised when I learned that Joan Plowright was married to Laurence Olivier. That was after he and Vivien Leigh broke up. I had always associated him with Vivien Leigh.

message 5160: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That's a trivia about Vivien Leigh I didn't know and am surprised too.

message 5161: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I meant to say about Laurence Olivier. I too associated him with V.L.

message 5162: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I read an autobiography of Laurence Olivier. It's called Confessions of an Actor. Here's a link to my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, on Feb. 24, I gave you a compliment in another thread. It's at:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
SEE MESSAGE #159.
Can you access that topic? It's called:
"What are you reading these days? (Part ELEVEN (2015) ongoing thread for 2015".

message 5164: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, and thanks for the compliment. What would I do without your comments. I'd miss a lot.

I feel the same, Nina!

message 5166: by Nina (last edited Mar 06, 2015 03:03PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments So many books and it truly does help me decide sometimes after another person who has read one of them tells on Goodreads what they thought of it. Lucky me to have a grandson who started me on it.

message 5167: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Deciding which books to read isn't always easy. Sometimes I read the reviews of the Goodreads members. Other times I read a sample of the book online to see if the book appeals to me.

message 5168: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's what GR is about for me - picking my friends for similar tastes in books & sharing our recommendations & reviews. That's why I try to write something helpful about every book I read. Plus, the comments often wind up with great discussions & even more recommendations.

message 5169: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I like Goodreads because it helps me remember what books I've read and what I thought of them.

message 5170: by Nina (last edited Mar 07, 2015 09:58AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, You do have great reviews. You get to the "Bottom" of every one of the books and I then decide on whether it's to my taste. I love reading yours, Werner's, Joy's and Jaque's and others i can't recall. All I can say, please continue to inform us.

message 5171: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Nina.

Joy, I'm agreeing with you more every year. A combination of age & sheer numbers of books have reached the point where I need a record. Not for every book or author of course, some stick out, but many are variations on a familiar theme & tend to blur together after a while. It's especially important to me not to lose track of those I didn't enjoy. I don't want to waste time trying to read them again.

message 5172: by Werner (new)

Werner Thank you, Nina! Will do. :-)

I feel the same, Jim, about movies as well as books. Netflix keeps a record for me. I've been marking more and more movies with "not interested" instead of stars. If the movie doesn't hook me soon enough, I bail out and mark it "not interested".

message 5174: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments One thing I like about my Kindle is that it archives all the books I have read through it. However, that doesn't help with the others/library books and some from Amazon/B & N. So a list is still a good idea. Also, good about the Kindle is you can order a free sample of any book on their list.

message 5175: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, what do you usually have to pay for a book for your Kindle?

message 5176: by Nina (last edited Mar 08, 2015 12:38PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, the price varies/mostly the books are through Amazon and they are always about half or less than hardbacks and somewhat cheaper than paperbacks and of course you pay no postage and you get them instantly so no driving to bookstores or libraries. As I have mentioned before this, I still get books at B & N and at the library. What helps is when I need a particular book for our book club that month and there is a long list at the library, I can then be certain I have the book immediately. Also, there are bargains on Kindle where I pay like 1.99 up to 3.99 and some classics are free,

message 5177: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Maggie Smith quote" "Oh, all this endless thinking, it'e very overrated."

message 5178: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments So many things are over-rated, IMO! But life is full of surprises ... if you wait around long enough. lol

About the Kindle prices, it would bother me if I paid for a book and then didn't like it. As for bargains, in most cases I've found that you get what you pay for, meaning the bargains are usually second-rate. As for the classics, most of them are too long-winded for me.

message 5179: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, some of the classics are long winded. Way to long to keep your interest up. As for paying for a book you don't like, I agree that's no fun but I am pretty particular what I order and also the samples are free as I said and long samples so I get a pretty good idea if I'd like the book. That really helps. However,I have made a few mistakes. Even when I have bought a book I thought I'd like, I haven't always. But, what would we do without them? Books, I mean. A sad thought.

message 5180: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I can access most book samples via Google Play at:
https://play.google.com/store/books

Also, Goodreads now has access to samples online. The link is at each book's page.

message 5181: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Didn't work very well for me, Joy. I typed in the title, "Funny Girl," and then hit Search and it took me to Amazon and said Buy Now with one click and I'd get it on Kindle. I might have to have a more updated version of Juno to access the free samples unless I just wanted to see the ones on the screen. Can you type in a title and get a free sample? I didn't try the Goodreads link. I will do it next. Thanks for the info in any case. Maybe i did it wrong.

message 5182: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments On my Kindle I just go to Menu and then the Kindle store and type the title and it takes me to the book and then I either buy it or press on Free Sample. I use this even if I am going to get the book at the library. Let me know how you go about getting the free samples of any book you are interested in and I'll try one more time.

message 5183: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 08, 2015 05:12PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, you have to go the the following link:
https://play.google.com/store/books
Try it. (Click on the above link.)

PS-You probably have to sign in at that page.

message 5184: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 08, 2015 05:15PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PPS- Here are some hits for "Funny Girl":
https://play.google.com/store/books/d...

and

https://play.google.com/store/books/d...

Click on "Free Sample".

message 5185: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks Joy, but these sites don't work well on my computer. I did get the Google store but all it showed was some titles that I wasn't interested in and it didn't look like I could type in a certain book title. Also, it did say I'd have to update to get the rest of the site. Then, I did get the "Funny Girl," page but when I pressed on Free Sample it said "Can't open the book." So, I can got reviews of books on Amazon and sample chapters on my Kindle so guess I'll have to stick to that but thanks for trying and although most wasn't a succes I was able to read a short review of Funny Girl and wouldn't that be a book you might like, yourself?

message 5186: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you, Nina.

Try this: Go to the following page and click on "PREVIEW":
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It's the page for The Art of Mending by Elizabeth Berg. I found it in your To-Read list.

See if clicking on PREVIEW takes you to a sample of the book.

message 5187: by Nina (last edited Mar 09, 2015 07:11PM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I was able to get, The Art of Mendiing by clicking on that title and thanks to you I had forgotten it was on my want to read list. However, when I tried the goodreads.com/book etc and clicked on PREVIEW I got the title The Art of Mending and then a blank page. I think my computer doesn't handle some of these websites but thanks for trying to help me. I appreciate it.

message 5188: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, what browser do you use? Maybe it's the fault of your browser. A few years ago I used Outlook Express as my browser. Now I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

message 5189: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You probably need a couple of add-ons installed on your computer, Nina. Book previews typically use either Adobe Flash or Java to display them. Unfortunately, both try to trick you into installing other programs & open you up to malware. You should probably discuss this with your computer person.

message 5190: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Joy, Outlook Express is an email client. You probably mean Internet Explorer was your browser & now Firefox is. Many of us moved in that direction, although many more have since moved on to using Chrome. I like Opera, too.

None of them is perfect, so I have to use a different one at times. For instance, while I can access the phone system with any browser, only Internet Explorer lets me do batch changes. Other devices & sites work better with one of the other browsers. It's a real pain at times.

message 5191: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 10, 2015 07:49AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, thanks for correcting me. Yes, I meant Internet Explorer. I never could get those names straight. To me they aren't good names, expecially "Outlook Express". It doesn't remind me of "email" at all. I guess the EX in both names made it hard for me to remember which was which.

Thanks for the info you posted to Nina above in message 5189.

message 5192: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I have Internet Explorer and usually have no problem with it.

message 5193: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I can't remember why I switched to Mozilla Firefox as my browser. I guess my sons set it up for me. I certainly wouldn't know how!

message 5194: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) They probably did, Joy. Internet Explorer was by far the most used browser for a lot of years since it came with the operating system, so that made it the target of choice for the bad guys. By putting you on Firefox, you avoided a lot of bad things. Now things have changed, so it's not as great of a choice overall, although it's still not bad. That's what I have Marg use primarily at home.

message 5195: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, thanks for explaining about that.

message 5196: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I think I sent a message last night but wasn't feeling well so don't know for sure. In any case, Joy you asked about my browser/It's Internet Explorer.

message 5197: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, I got that message you sent.

message 5198: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The movie I recommended is Le Chef.

message 5199: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 12, 2015 08:43AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, you had posted "Chef" (2014)(without the Le) and I'm streaming it from Netflix right now! LOL

You had posted the following at: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
You wrote:
"Also, just watched a good movie, "Chef." I recommended it. Also set in Paris but not dark."
(I copied and pasted the above from Message #185)

Now I'll look for "Le Chef" (2012) instead.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-The movie, "Chef" is making me so hungry that I'm gonna have an early lunch right now (take-home food left-over from The Olive Garden restaurant last night. It's eggplant which I love.). :)
