Good information but seems a bit strange to me. Most of this except for the Spanish Am. War was later than my school studies.

I graduated from high school in 1970; but I don't honestly recall ever studying much about either place in school. What I posted just now came from a couple of (relatively) recent almanacs I have here at home.
Yes, Werner, the legal status of Puerto Rico is unique. Interesting that they don't have to pay US income tax!
Seems strange doings to me but I am no politician and glad of that. Most of this seems to have been delgated in the 1950's and nothing changed since then.
Goodnight everyone. Sleep well and stay warm and hopefully no flu will visit your homes this season. Do any of you have a flicker bird visiting your feeders? They are so pretty and two came yesterday.
I am reading the best book in a very long time. Oh, but it's hard to put down. "The Light You Cannot See," but beware it does have flashbacks. However, I said once if the writing is good and it's done well I can forgive the author. The setting is in Brittany during WWII and viewpoints are from a young French blind girl and a young German soldier who is trapped in a basement.
Nina, that sounds like a good one. all the light you cannot see by Anthony Doerr. At Amazon it says: "Publication Date: May 6, 2014
NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST
"From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II."

I've put it on my To Read shelf. Thanks, Nina.
Another interesting book, but not for everyone/"The Hundred Year Old Man Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared." Weird humor but qutie an interesting theme.

Last night we watched the old movie, "The Odd Couple," starring Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau. Some movies hold their own down through the years. We thought this one did, still so funny we laughed most of the way through it, once again. We had an added interest in seeing it again as in the early seventies, our son, stayed at this apartment where the movie was filmed. His college roomate's mother lived there and also at the time they were filming. Interesting to think of our son walking in those exact spaces.
Nina, that's an interesting connection with "The Odd Couple". My sister and I watched the Golden Globe Awards last night.
There is a waiting list of over 6oo for the book,"All The Light You Cannot Read," so guess I won't suggest it for our book club/maybe a year from now. Very Popular. That is the blessing of my Kindle/not very expensive and right there at my fingertips.

I still can't get used to reading without a REAL book in my hand.
Lively discussion at my book club this morning trying to pick our books to be read and discussed this year. I will post the titles after I get the final decisions.
I look forward to seeing the titles, Nina.Today I'm nearing the end of the 4th season of Downton Abbey. I can't pull myself away from the TV! They've done such a good job with that series! Thank you for mentioning it and drawing me back to it.
Nina, Downton Abbey will never end! They just keep creating new characters and new problems. :) It's a money-maker!
That makes me feel better. I find I am # 2 on the waiting list for the book at the library titled, "The Rosie Project," by Graeme Simsion. It is on a very long waiting list at our KS library. I have library cards in two different states. This is our book selection for next month for our book club. It seems to have had rave reviews. Check it out Joy and Jackie, you might like it.
I had thought this was the last season for Downton Abbey, but they are scheduled to do a 6th. I hope it stays as good. I wonder if Maggie Smith will be in it. I thought she said this one was her last season. We're almost done with this season & I'm pretty sure we're going to lose a couple of characters (view spoiler)
I just finished watching Season 4 of Downton Abbey, via Amazon Prime Instant Video. I also watched a couple of free short previews of Season 5:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P...

Nina, here's the GR link for the book you mentioned:The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.
They call it a "hilarious, feel-good novel". That's very promising!
Because it is so "warm" today we are going to Trader Joe's and then delivering fresh baked banana bread to my daughter who is caring for her grandchildren this afternoon. Then I walk and listen to birdsong and watch to see if any robins appear. Otherwise, I drink a cup of tea and read.
Well, we just had some excitement. The dogs got a coon in the woods, Pip's first. The coon was torn open, something the girls have never managed, so I guess young Pip is going to be of some use. While I did shoot it, they certainly had it done in. It was more of mercy killing at that point. My wife is deserting me to go visit my daughter & SIL in Nashville, about 4 hours away. Erin took her horse down there & has nothing but issues since, so her Mommy is coming down to help set things right & settle her down. I don't know what trouble the animals & I will get into. Probably not much. I might splurge & actually leave the farm to get a spicy pizza or sub. Otherwise, I have to move more hay to the horse barn, fix the fence in a couple of places & do some other chores.
And people say I don't know how to have fun!
;)
Nothing poor about the coons around here, Joy. My next door neighbor got permission to spotlight them this past summer after they ate his corn field. In a week he shot over two dozen & we still see plenty around. Had to dispose of a few ourselves. They need some thinning.
Jim, It's only fun when you want to do it. Sounds to me like a list of chores Speaking of which I am tired from having a Navy bean soup with cornbread dinner for company/two loads of dishes in dishwasher and lots of scrubing pans and cast iron cornbread holders. Wasn't as tiring twenty years ago.
Today I am taking your advice, Joy. No dusting, cleaning, scrubbing bathrooms, watering plants/just warming leftovers, but I am going to clean out the birdbath while the weather is cooperating.
I am reading "All The LIght You Cannot See," for the second time and enjoying it ever so much as the first reading/except for knowing how it ends. If it isn't the best book I've read, it is on that list. You will miss something if you don't read it. I feel I have discovered a treasure like I once felt when I started on the "Little House," books. And the Wizard of OZ..
Nina, I'm sampling the book, All the Light We Cannot See, at: https://play.google.com/books/reader?...Thank you for encouraging me to read it.
Just picked up "The Rosie Project," at the library as it is our book selection this month for my book club. Two members have already read it and couldn't stop laughing. What do you know of it?
Nina, On Jan. 16, I posted the following at our "reading" thread:==================================================
Nina had mentioned The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. She said it's a very popular book. Most of the Goodreads reviews are positive, but there is a NEGATIVE review of the book at:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The review is written by GR member "B the Book Addict". I think Nina would enjoy reading this negative review and the 16 comments that follow it.
The reviewer found the book's protagonist (a character named Don Tillman) to be "annoying". I thought the same thing while I was reading a sample of the book at:
https://play.google.com/store/books/d... (Click on "FREE SAMPLE".)
I can't understand why so many people found the book enjoyable. Yes, it did keep me reading the sample but all the time I was thinking how much I disliked Don Tillman, the protagonist. He was definitely ANNOYING, IMO!
=================================================
Oh Joy, thanks for sending this as it will be most interesting for me to read. I think I will read the book first and then decide if I agree with him and with you. I'll definitely let you know my opinion.
OK, Nina. I think you are more tolerant of Don Tillman's personality than I am. He's too much of a fussbudget!
Just go to the group home page & click on a the name like "Orientation". Then you'll see the ability to edit them at the top right.
Ah! I clicked on "Discussion Board" and then I saw "edit folders". THANK YOU, JIM!I knew it was something like that but couldn't quite remember. Those words "Discussion Board" do not look like they are "clickable" but they are! How is a person supposed to know that? You have to hover over the words and then the "hand" appears, showing that it's clickable. Hover, hover, hover! Name of the game! :-(
I hate it when I accidently hover and the screen changes. This happens a lot at IMDb. They are getting more "in your face" all the time. It borders on rudeness the way they FORCE you to look at things. Used to be that when you searched for a movie and clicked on the link, you'd go right to the desired info. Now, instead, they make you look at a big movie ad at the top of the screen first and you have to scroll to get to the movie-info you want. NERVY!
I HATE loud commercials. I heard they made them illegal, but it sure seems like they keep doing it. Well, we typically watch programs that have been prerecorded, even the news, so we skip through them.
I agree about loud commercials on TV. Other things which bother me are the constant ads for medicines and the endless side-effects of those medicines. Hearing all those side-effects is disturbing!
Joy, we seem to agree on most things. I feel disturbed by all the dire warnings and I am disgusted by the constnat showing of men's belly buttons. Even my husband dislikes looking at them. Also, getting back to books; I also have to agree after perusing The Rosie Project," as I could find nothing in the book that made me want to read further than the first page. I tried to engage myself but failed.
