What are U doing today? (Ongoing thread)
Now I am wondering which one I watched, Le Chef or Chef as we always opt for subtitles. I'll look at my Netflix list.
Was it spoken in French, Nina? "Le Chef" was spoken in French with English subtitles. Was it about a chef who starts a business using a food truck? That would be the movie, "Chef".
Joy, I did see Chef. It was Ok, not great. The one I really liked did have subtitles and for my husband and myself that helps so we use them. Le Chef was a far better movie than Chef if you ever decided to try it.
Nina, do you understand French? I studied French but cannot understand the conversations in a movie spoken in French. The English subtitles don't give me a real sense of the story. While I'm reading the subtitles, I miss the movie. LOL
No, I don't understand French enough to know what they are saying/too fast for my brain. I think subtitles are just a matter of getting used to them. I probably felt as you did years ago. Now, they are second nature. I turn on the volumn so that I can hear what they are saying in French and then substitute the subtitles to their speech if that makes sense/in the meantime, lucky you that you aren't abliged to use subtitles. I don't have any problem with the nightly newscasts/no subtitles required but I do if there is a Britsh accent or other type of accent then I can't understand it at my age now. By the way a good movie from long ago/no subtitles required is, "The Man Who Knew Too Much," starring Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day.
Nina, these days, I use subtitles whenever I can, even if the characters are speaking English. I can usually hear just fine but sometimes the words seem muffled or spoken too quickly. Of course, the British accents are often more difficult to understand. That's why I like subtitles.Amazon Prime offers subtitles on all films, even when streaming to my TV screen. Netflix offers subtitles only when I stream to my laptop screen but not when I stream to my TV screen.
Thanks for telling me about "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956). I'll look for it. I see that the director is Alfred Hitchcock. So it's a thriller.

"James Stewart and Doris Day give magnificent performances as Ben and Jo McKenna, an American couple vacationing in Morocco, whose son is kidnapped and taken to England. Caught up in international espionage, the McKennas' lives hang in the balance as they race to save their son in the chilling, climactic showdown in London's famous Royal Albert Hall."
I had a wonderful day today. It was gorgeous out, so I took 2 rides around the farm on Chip even though it is so deep he sounded like a cartoon character with every step. Did some gardening, put in the fish pond pump, & Marg topped it off by making me my favorite meal, corned beef with cabbage & red potatoes followed by German Chocolate cake for dessert. No candles, so no need to call the fire department.;)
Except for the cake(which I'm sure was yummy) we had the same dinner tonight/corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes and we had carrots and applesauce and Irish soda bread. They are predicting 84 degrees here tomorrow. But late in the week back down to the fifties. I bet it was a good day for riding for you. Hope the weather is nice on your birthday, Jim.
Thanks, Nina. I'm hoping it will be nice this coming weekend & I can get more yard work done, although there is a 50% chance of rain on Thursday. I'm making it a long one, taking Thursday & Friday off. I need to renew my driver's license & Marg has to get a colonoscopy, so I needed to take a day off anyway.
Enjoy your long weekend, Jim, although it will be a busy one, I see. Happy Birthday and many more happy returns of the day!
Those are not fun chores for either you nor Marge/especially Marge but hope you get those necessay chores out of the way and enjoy your Birthday/after all it only comes once a year.
I just mowed the back lawn for the first time! It didn't need a lot, but I started to chop up some debris from the gardens & saw it really did need it. Patchy, but definitely growing.
Today is to be sixty eight in the afternoon so this is the time to remove the mulch and plant some bulbs that have been sprouting in a pan in the garage over the winter. I am not planting flowers for another week as one night this week is going down to thirty six. I must do a bit at a time in my little secret garden. wish you could all come have a cuppa back there with me.
I think we hit 60 today, but haven't set foot outside in 2 days. Have the flu. Feel like dirt.:(
(Yes, I'm doing all the right stuff, just needs to run its course.)
Hope tomorrow you feel well enough to venture up and out. Take Care, we're all sorry you are feeling bad. nina
Joy, happy birthday to you! Hope your special day is everything you want it to be, and that the next year of your life is happy and rewarding. Thanks for all that you do as moderator of this group!

I suppose I should advertise more around town but I've resigned myself to the fact that there are just too many competing distractions online. Our public library tried online group readings a while back and there wasn't much interest. Besides, I've gotten a bit "shy" since I started this group. Now I just let the group remain available in case an enthusiastic local person discovers the group. One never knows...
Happy Birthday/we share a birthday month and I beat you in age. I might have liked that when I was fifteen rather than looking at 88 coming up the end of the month.
And thank you also for all the interesting web sites you post and love your quotes. You make us all happy so you deserve a happy day just for yourself.
Nina, thank you for your wishes and kind words. I had a great day. My sister took me out to lunch and then we shopped and then we went to a movie at our local dinner theater. We saw "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" (2015)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2555736/?...
Since there were no subtitles, I missed a lot of what was being said, especially because of the accents. So I didn't catch onto the plot until well into the movie. There really wasn't much of a plot, IMO.
Nice that you were with a sister on your birthday as the rest doesn't matter. I hate the accents and loud music in movies. So I understand. I might not bother with that movie.
Nina, my sister loved "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". In fact she had already seen it and was willing to see it a second time with me. So it can't be all bad. :)
What I was doing today was taking my husband who came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon back to the emergency room. AFter coming home he realized his feet and legs were severly swollen so back again for more tests and x-rays and finally he was given an intravenus injection of a diraretic hope that is spelled right and he was able to return home once again. We are hoping it works. He has more tests next week but he is here and alive and that is the miracle of the week. Keep us both in your prayers. Thanks, nina
Oh, Nina, I pray that your husband will be OK. I can imagine what you're going through. Is the hospital nearby?
Good luck, Nina. Best wishes.Had a nice ride on Chip today, although he decided splashing in the pond wasn't enough, so we swam across it. Even though I was kneeling on his back, my boots & lower legs got wet enough that I had to change. It was a lot of fun!
Oh yes, Jim sounds like fun. I always wanted to ride a horse on the Pacific beach through the tide. Joy, our hospital isn't far. My husband said after the second trip in twenty four hours, "Why don't we sell our house and move to the hospital?" At least he still has his sense of humor.
Nina, I'm glad to hear that your husband can still joke around after all he's been though!Jim, sounds like Chip is a "chip off the old block". :)
You and your husband are both in Barb's and my prayers, Nina. Glad that, as you say, he's home, alive, and has his sense of humor intact!
Thanks, the prayers did their job. He is enjoying being in his own bed and not hooked up to everthing imaginable and trying to sleep. I think the birds are also happy to have him at our breakfast table as their eating station is right outside of the window. He fills it for me sometimes. There is joy found in such little things, isn't there? Here' a quote I like that my daughter put on facebook this morning. I didn't see the author's name: "Every step you take is supported by a thousand ancestors."
Yes, it was a special day/rain which we needed and just the two of us enjoying watching part of the Masters and then eating a delicious dinner from a Jewish deli that our daughter brought to us/chicken, noodle matzo ball soup. Yummm! Beats hospital says my husband.
I posted some pics from Sunday - the gardens, Chip & I swimming, & such here:https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
Now I know why I've always liked KY. Lovely shots even the ones of you in the water and the horse beneath you. Nice to have fun after being sick and the hard winter snows.
Thanks, Nina. The water was COLD! In that blurry shot, I'm pushing up with my hands because my crotch just got dunked. Brrrr!;)
I'm so tickled with the bank gardens. I know they don't look like much in the photos, but they're coming along great. Last year was the first year I planted them, so the perennials haven't filled in a lot yet. There's still some grass & weeds, but I can't pull them all or the bank would wash.
Thanks for the pics, Jim! You have a beautiful place there! I love the bird bath. Your magnolia is lovely. My dad always had magnolias. In fact he grafted a new one from his own magnolia bush. (Are magnolias considered bushes or trees?)I love seeing Chip in the water. I suppose he went there willingly... Amazing!
Thanks, Joy. There are hundreds of different types of true magnolias & even more that use the name improperly. For instance, some call the Tulip Poplar a magnolia, but they're wrong. There's a big difference in the flower & smell of the wood. Magnolias can range from bushes to large trees. It's an old type of tree. Not as old as the ginkgo, but close, I think. Some are deciduous, others are evergreens & we have quite a mix here in KY. Some are native to the area, but there are a lot of imports & tons of cultivars. This time of year, I really see them. Depending on how I go home I can pass over a dozen different types.
Jim, there are a few Magnolias in our area but many more tulip trees. And, yes I agree. They are not the same.
I didn't know Magnolias came in bushes also. I also didn't know dogwoods came in bushes but they are beautiful. We used to live next door to them.

The other movie, "Chef", turned out to be pretty good. I gave it 3 stars. The plot was very thin but the acting was good. So was the food. :)
