Your opinions on the 'King' of the Assassins here!

message 2: by Sydney she.her (new)

Sydney she.her (bewberry) I would love for Celaena to put a knife through his ribs. The last thing he says at the end of 'The Assassin and the Empire' makes me want to punch him in the face, "I don't like to share my belongings." So much hatred for this man.
I hope that in the future novel(s) Celaena finds out who betrayed her and Sam!

What annoys me is that he sees Celaena as 'his'. She's her own person and the sooner or later he's going to realise that she's alive, fighting and out for revenge. She worked so hard to be independent of him and 'The Assassin and the Empire' really showed how clingy and power-hungry Arobynn is.

In this series, reading the novellas gives you a clearer picture of Celaena and her past. It allows you to understand her alot more, and to see the lead up to her being in Endovier. It's not a necessity to read, but the novellas are brilliantly written and worth the read :)

talltyrion | 188 comments So I finished The Assassin and the Empire today. My friends had to talk me down when Sam died, and at what's-his-scum-face Arobynn said at the end... I kinda stood there, and I stared blankly, and I envisioned scenarios that were so not legal to do. Celaena, pray give me a few good pages of sweet revenge. If not for your fans, for Sam. I liked the poor kid. He gave you leaked sheet music, for crying out loud!!

The sheet music scene made me cry.
Sam's death made me cry.
Celaena's breakdown made me cry.
Hell, this entire BOOK made me cry!!

Celaena needs a payback scene. Arobynn is definitely scum - well said, WordlesslyAmazed!

talltyrion | 188 comments Thank you. Never thought I'd see a character so twisty and foul. One second, he seems almost halfway decent, like he has a shred of honest human emotion in him, and the next, he's a backstabbing rodent-loaf with an enormous ego and a God complex. You just can't win.

*sighs* With these villains, you never can.

He did almost seem decent, didn't he? And then he ruined it by being petty and controlling. Let Celaena have a life, dude. Take out your issues on someone else!

Nancy | 21 comments At first in the first few chapters of Assassin and the Pirate Lord, I thought, okay, maybe this Arobynn Hamel guys isn't too bad... but then page after page, novella after novella, he became even more horrible. I wonder if he even realises what he's doing and how he can actually bring himself to actually do the things that he did? I wonder if what made him like this?

Sophie (warpedline) | 6 comments I don't like him, but I don't HATE him, if that makes sense?
Arobynn is kind of a pivotal figure in Celaena's past- I think it would kind of ruin things for her to kill him. Yes, I would like there to be a face off between him and Celaena, maybe some kind of emotional confrontation and maybe a little violence- but not death. I think he has too much of a major roll in Celaena's past than for Sarah Maas to suddenly kill him off.

This guy seems to be pure evil. I think he might have loved or been fond of Celaena and raised her as his own child in a way...

message 20: by Booknut, Head Moderator (new)

Booknut 101 (booknut101) | 515 comments Mod
To me, he isn't as much 'pure evil' as 'purely calculating'. His intentions are always selfish - everything he does he does for a reason.

He took Celaena in for a reason.
He trained her for a reason.
He killed the man she loved for a reason.
He didn't have her killed for a reason.
And he hasn't appeared back in her life yet for a reason.

I think it's important to remember that although Celaena's present, as such, is occupied by the king, etc., that Arobynn is still out there somewhere, biding his time.

Yvonne | 17 comments I will admit I think that Dorian will die later on in one of the books. I hope it wont happen, but it might. I was right about Nehemia.

But I don't understand anything @ana said. Whats this about Chaol dying and the tower and Arobynns secret romance?

message 26: by Steph (new)

Steph (thegirlwiththehorse) | 2 comments The freaky thing about Arobynn is that yeah he is the spawn of Saten, epitome of all that is evil, and I think hell itself would spit him out.....but.....am I the only one who finds him fascinating? Please, nobody hate me...its easy to shelf evil characters as, "oh well their only point to the book is to be evil, and cause drama and mayham."
Arobynn isn't JUST evil (at least in my view) there is a lot of mystery around him and different sides to him. Yes his treatment of Celaena is pretty much awful but why does he feel the need to own her? Like in the scene with Celaena and Arobynn in the apartment and he is well.....sad(?)....what I mean is, there just seems more to him and his horrible plans for Celaena then meets the eye. Does nobody find it suspicious that he knew her true heritage the whole time and was JUST gonna let her be an assassin and leave it totally behind. I dunno, it just seems all a little sketch to me. I just can't help but find Arobynn fascinating because you know, YOU KNOW there is more to him and about him that we are given.

message 27: by talltyrion (new)

talltyrion | 188 comments You're right, Stephanie. He is fascinating. Honestly, I feel terrible even saying it, but as much as I want him to die... then what? He's too dynamic, too interesting. It's like when the main character lets the villain get away purely because they need someone to play the game with. It's Jim Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes.

Anum | 61 comments omg dont get me started on Arobynn ..i hated him throughout the last three novellas..especially when he betrayed her and sent her into a trap about those business deals, then using her money she gave to pay of her debt in Lysandras biding and in the end telling her why he beated her just because she picked Sam over him....

message 29: by Kaina (new)

Kaina (kainal) | 30 comments Although I seriously dislike the guy I have to agree, his character is utterly fascinating. There are so many sides of him that we don't know about but I can't help but think that he has his own agenda and a much larger scheme in play. Im re reading Heir of Fire right now and Chaol talks about how Arobynn must have planned on retrieving her at some point that way shed be his ever loyal servant. Also in the novellas its obvious that he could have broken her out of the wagon that was taking her to Endovier but decided not to, probably to have her broken and shed have no choice but to go back to him.

Alice (Booksandfreshlybrewedtea) (earthtoalice) | 46 comments i think arobynn is the sort of character that must win. i.e celaenas his, and if he cant have her then no one can?

quick question does arobynn know of Celaena heritage her right to the throne and her powers?

message 43: by Amba (new)

Amba | 2 comments Is Arobynn the antagonist we all believe him to be?

So I've just finished reading Heir of Fire (again) and now I wonder. If Arobynn knows who and what Celaena is, why did he train her? He put her through hell, no? Had her caught and sent to Endovier... If he knew the power she represented, why do that? Of course, it could just be that he is an evil evil man BUT... That would also mean he is foolish. Somehow, I don't believe that to be so. Training the Heir and long lost Queen of Terrassen would have been dangerous even if she didn't want to be who she was. Surely he had thought that would not be the case forever, she would become Aelin once more and exact retribution. I mean, come on, he has given her all the skills to kill, add that to political power and a a deep burning hatred for the wrong doing's exacted against her kingdom... he's practically set himself up to die by her hands. What did he hope to gain? Power? How? Had she never deigned to take up her role as sovereign, she would just be another brilliant assassin in his arsenal of brilliant assassins. Why send her to Endovier? Why put all that will and pain into teaching her, making her hate you (for God's sakes, he killed Sam- her Sam) if you knew that one day, there was the possibility she would sit as ruler on the throne of a great and powerful country. Why would foolish Arobynn Hamel do that? Unless, of course, he is not foolish. Imagine what he would gain if Terrassen was returned to its former glory at the hand of one of his greatest assassins. War would be business, good business. But maybe that's not what he stands to achieve. What if little ol' Arobynn Hamel supported Terrassen?

What do you think?

message 46: by Noris (new)

Noris | 574 comments I think there's much more about Arobyn that we don't know yet. You know... I was thinking a little bit about Severus Snape. The way he always hurt Potter... And guess what.... He did it all for love. What if Arobyn is kinda the same?

message 47: by Roisin (new)

Roisin Whelan (xroannax) | 2 comments I re-read The Assassin and the Empire and the feeling of hatred towards Arobynn literally consumed me until my heart was going to beat its way out of my chest. I don't think I have ever hated a character so much in my life. He is just so manipulative and calculating and brilliant but boy does he makes my toes curl whenever a single god damn word comes out of this guys mouth.
Sarah has done a brilliant job in creating this character and I feel like I am in Celaena's shoes exactly when Arobynn betrays her. He knows just how to push peoples buttons. I mean everytime I return to these novellas (my way to survive until SEPTEMBER when QOS comes out) I know what is coming and what Arobynn does to Celaena but it STILL GETS ME. I HATE HIM!!!!!! I can't wait til Aelin kicks his ass in QOS (i know she will!) he deserves it. However, he continues to intrigue me and i can't wait to learn more about his motives and why he saved Celaena that night. AHHH SO PUMPED FOR QOS!!!!

message 48: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 12 comments I think Arobynn definitely has something up his sleeves.. I don't understand why he would let Celaena go to the mine and pay for her not to be killed or whipped too bad and for her to be in the castle as the king's champion and BOT contact her. He's waiting for her to come to him (which Celaena is finally doing in QoS)

He is evil, no if ands or buts about it.. He tricked her into killing someone trying to save slaves because he knew it would hurt her, he bought the whores virginity because he knew it would hurt her and he killed Sam because he knew it would hurt her.. I think Arobynn needs to do a better job at expressing his feelings..

My theory on Arobynn is that the king hired him to kill the royal family and had the Valg princes go with him. The Valg princes scared the shit out of Arobynn so when he saw Celaena in her Fae form, he saw it as protection from whatever evil monster the King has up his sleeves..

I don't think Celaena can kill Arobynn unless he hurts someone else she loves.. I see someone other than Celaena killing him, and I don't care who it is but HE NEEDS TO DIIIIIEEE!!!! Preferably painfully

message 49: by Zuzi (new)

Zuzi | 30 comments Do you think that Arobynn is aware of that the amulet he possess is a wyrdkey? I wonder (if he knew that it was a wyrdkey) what he was planning with it and with Celaena..I know it may be too far from the truth but what if he was hoping to use Celaena and the wyrdkey to claim the kingdom? I mean he was always ambitious and if he had a piece of magic and an heir to a throne it wouldn't be that hard to start something... Get more power than he already had..
Sorry if some of you had already written something like this here, it just crossed my mind :3 so .. who knows?

I don't think he knows it's a wyrdkey, but I think he is going to be interested by why Celaena wants it back in QoS..

But what if the necklace was glowing or something when Arobynn saved Celaena and he might not know exactly what it is but knows it's powerful magic
