I know it's not The Goddess Test. I think it starts with a d. I lent it to a friend, then she moved and I never got it back. Great read, and there was something about a staircase. And Cerberus.

Vicious Circle ? Or The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker maybe? The second one I think is a little more along the lines of what you are looking for. It is a series, and I've only read part of this book, so not totally sure it matches your parameters, but it is DEFINATELY a "Modern" take on the story.

Was it a novel on it's own or with other stories? Mercedes Lackey has a story about Persephone and Hades in Harvest Moon
