It was the way he ended that made him a hero. Yes, he made grave mistakes throughout his life but can we really blame him? If my dad had totally checked out and left me with a psycho mom that knew I would be possessed by an evil Titan one day, I'd be a little pissed off too! But in the end, even though none of that had changed, he still made the right decision. His sacrifice is the one that ended the Titan War, and saved more lives than he'd ended.

Catherine has a good point though, heroes in Greek mythology don't exactly do heroic things...

Catherine Actually, I just wanted to chime in with one more point. It's not just Greek heroes. All heroes have the potential for error in them, and in fact it's choosing to do the right thing and facing those errors that defines them as heroes.

Spiderman made PLENTY of mistakes during his career (which I won't detail in honor of the new movie franchise). Green Arrow neglected Speedy enough that his feelings of abandonment drove him to heroin. Batman has Jason Todd on his conscience, enough said.

Heroes make mistakes. It happens. What makes them heroes is that they do the right thing when we need them to.

If you'll remember, it could have been Thalia or Annabeth. Luke, like Annabeth, had great hubris; he believed he could do what nobody did before him and make a world he and all other demigods would like. That plan in itself was a good plan, but it was the way that Luke went about it that corrupted him. But he gave up his life after he realized what he had done, and that's what makes him a hero.

Tatiana Jones In this book starting off reading it you wouldn't think of Luke as a hero, you would portray him as the traitor. But as you read on annabeth knows exactly how luke is and had faith in him this whole time. She knew he was still holding on and that he was basically under Kronos, the head of the titans, spell. Luke was a hero because he ended up sacrificing himself to save Olympus. He had no one but himself and still managed to die for everyone else even when people didn't believe in him or even gaven up.

Ivan Vega Luke was a hero because he sacrificed himself for the good of the rest of the world and demigods. If he would have let Kronos take over, then they probably would of all died. yes, he did voluntarily go to the Titans side, but it was because at the time he thought the Gods were worse than the Titans because his father, Hermes, left him, which caused his mom to go crazy. He lost both of his parents at a young age, and this drove a hatred towards the gods. Then he realized he was wrong and was able to stop Kronos before anything bad happened.

Maddie Meyer I think Luke, in the end came through as a hero instead of a villian. Yes, he was evil and did things that disgusted me, but he changed. Luke (SPOILER) died to protect the others, and in the end he had a change of heart. Luke had a pure heart that had been corrupted by Kronos. Take Selena for instance, she was a kind person. She betrayed the others to help who she thought she loved and was doing the right thing. But, in the end she saved them all.

Abby I think he is a hero because he killed Kronos and he took Anabeth under his wing when she was all alone.
