Welcome to Constant Reader

Welcome, Erik. Back surgery? Time for an iPad!
Hi everyone. I'm Nicole, and I live in Grenoble, though I am originally an American. I found this group using some kind of widget that searches for groups reading books on your shelves. I am pretty sure you all came up because you are reading Stoner, which I have been wanting to read since reading a New Yorker piece describing Williams as a "writer's writer"(but failing; the only copy I can find here is a French translation). I am a member of a traditional, in-person book group here, which I very much enjoy. This year we are reading German literature, and I am discovering things I would never have read for any other reason, many of them quite good. Still, I don't really have a good community to talk about English language literary fiction, which I still read quite a lot of, and I am hoping that this group will be a good fit. Your reading list for the first half of the year certainly looks delicious.
Last year I started a new job on the university campus here, which has the added bonus effect of granting me access to all of the campus libraries, including one dedicated to foreign literature (such as English). Between that, our local bookstores, and the public library, I'm hoping to be able to keep up with your selections without resorting to the website-of-last-resort.
Welcome, Nicole. Do you have a Kindle? That's where I bought Stoner, but then, that's the website of last resort, I'm sure. Love that description.
Thanks Sherry!I do not have a kindle, and I'm not sure I want one. On the one hand, this summer I saw my mother-in-law relaxing in the garden in the sun with a zillion books on her e-reader, and it looked pretty tempting, especially since I had just lugged a giant backpack filled with books up the stairs. On the other, I really do like a physical book, especially library books and second hand books, which you can't get on a kindle.
In this case it's a moot point, as I caved and ordered Stoner this morning from the website that dare not speak its name. I can't wait to catch up with the rest of you.
Rosabeatrice, as of just now, they seem to have fixed the option to get most recent posts first. Go to the top of your thread, look for the word date on the right side and click on the little triangle. It will reverse then and you will get the word "newest" next to it. It's been a huge pain while that function didn't work, especially on the long threads.Welcome, Erik and Nicole. We're glad to have you here.
Welcome, Felipe. I love your icon. What are your favorite books by Brazilian authors that might be translated into English?
Barbara, this icon in someway reminds me of life itself, with all its contemplative moments. I dont know if you already have translated Érico Veríssimo's books, but if you dont, you definitly should! specialy the book "O tempo e o vento"; something like "The time and the wind". One of the best books ive ever read! Ive just finished today " Anna Karienina", Liev Tolstoi. Loved it
Felipe, I found Time and the Wind translated on Amazon, but they list it from various used book stores at outrageous prices. Hopefully, he will get more recognized here at some point and a publisher will do a new edition.I envy you finishing Anna Karenina for the first time. It's one of the few books that I've read twice. Tolstoy is my favorite classic writer.
Felipe, I just found that my library system has one copy of Time and the Wind. I'll have to look into this one.
Felipe wrote: "I really think you should get it, Sue! I'm glad you've found it! Let me know when you start it!"It may be a while as I'm in the middle of a couple of lengthy group reads but I will add it to my list. I won't mind if you remind me in a few months :)

Well, I'm almost 16. I have been reading since I was 5. I live in Shiraz, Iran.
I read almost everything I can get my hands on, from cookbooks to magazines and classics.
I also watch a lot of movies and series and listen to almost any kind of music, except Iranian pop.
that's about it.

Hello! I'm Claire. I read a mixture of young adult, classics, adult fiction, and sci-fi books. I can't wait to get to know you all!
My name is Annalisa. I'm 25 years old and I'm from just outside of Chicago. This is actually my first book club that I've ever joined. I've always been more of an independent reader but I find it invigorating to be able to discuss books
I enjoy and love with others that enjoy them as well. I look forward to discussions with all of you : )
Welcome from me, too, Annalisa. We have several members in that area. I hope you enjoy the discussions.
Welcome, Annalisa. This was my first book club too and I've never joined another. It is so convenient to come here when you have the time, no matter what you look like, and have great conversations.
Hi my names Mel, I'm from England and absolutely love to read. At the present moment I am reading Animal Farm.
Hey Mel I had to expand your avatar. Where did you get a photo of my kitty. Mine is charcoal and white. LOL! Welcome to the group.
Hello, my name is Gabriela, originally from Romania and living in US now where I work as a scientist. Love to read (Byatt - her short stories like The Matisse stories are amazing), the Russians, w Dostoyevsky, Chekhov and Gogol as all-time favorites, P. Auster, M. Cunningham, Lorrie Moore, J. Lahiri, R. Skwiot among Americans, and finally GG Marques and Ernesto Sabato among South Americans --- to mention just a very few of the candies that satisfy my sweet tooth for good literature, so to speak.)I love that there is such an international presence in this group - definitely a plus and a chance to learn about other cultures.
Welcome, Gabriela! Your sweet tooth will definitely be satisfied here. I hope you take part in the discussions.
Welcome, Gabriela. It sounds to me like you are really going to like this place. I particularly share your love for the Russians though Tolstoy is my favorite. I haven't read Ernesto Sabato and I'm interested.
Hi, I'm Carmen; I live in Georgia. I'm so glad to be a part of this group! Thank you for accepting me. I look forward to many interesting reads and discussions. :)
