Hi. I am Lisa. I am not exactly new. I have been a member of GR for 5 years and joined this group at some point, but never really participated. I live in Western North Carolina - near Hendersonville. I am the mother of 2 teens and the wife of a rock n' roll drummer. Besides spending time with friends (often at book groups) and with my family, books and art are the twin passions of my life. I have a PhD in American Lit but after having children decided that teaching at the secondary level was more my thing. I teach language arts to 7th graders. Sharing language and literature with them gives me much joy. They are crazy fun. Our next novel up is True Grit. It's going to be a blast.

Sherry, Miss Julia is a hilarious series about an older woman. Most of the books take place in your neck of the woods.
Miss Julia lives in a fictitious town very closely modeled on Hendersonville. Her creator Anne
Oops Miss Julia's creator is a retired literature professor Ann Ross. Her books are more entertainments than high art. They are quite funny. If you live in Hendersonville they are even funnier, well, if you can laugh at yourself.
I'm please to have been accepted into this community, and hope what little insight I have will prompt others to leap to greater insights. I moved to Appalachia(Cosby, TN) 14 years ago from St. Petersburg, FL. The mountains drew me here. The people have embraced me and I have embraced the people: I've earned some excellent friends here. But one doesn't move to Appalachia for the intellectual or cultural stimulation. And I have missed the stimulation. In this neck of the woods, if the book you are carrying down the street is not a book of coupons, eyes will look at you askance!
I hope to make friends here, united by books, reading them, discussing them and arguing about them.
I especially like historical fiction and know we won't read the same scene and experience it in the same way. Fiction is a collaborative art in which the writer attempts to sketch the outlines of a story, but it is the reader who fleshes out the details. As each envisions the scene we each will see different things. There will be no right and wrong, but using those differences as a springboard for discussion: what a delight!
It angers me when I hear a writer say that someone misunderstood the story. No, the reader didn't misunderstand. The reader created at least 50% of the story in his/her imagination. If you, writer, think the reader went off course, then the fault is yours, writer, for not giving enough guideposts along the way. It is not the reader's failure. It's yours, the writer's.
I hope to make friends here, and be a friend as well.

Hi I'm Julia from Maryland (north where it snows a lot during the winter). Thank you so much for inviting me into your group. I read your history and am very humbled by the longevity of your group. It seems quite a feat in this world where quality is the unsought gem. I hope what insights I bring will be useful, but I will probably be learning much at first and ask questions too. I have four children who sometimes interrupt me when I am on the computer so if I say anything that seems incomplete or makes you wonder if I tippled the sherry too much please feel free to question me :) .

Hi, everybody! I have to admit that I wasn't too confident about being accepted into this group and I was very happy to see Constant Reader listed as a group I belong to.I live in a small city in central Italy and I just can't find anyone who reads. I'm sure they're here because there are six or seven book stores that have been in business at least since I arrived about eight years ago and who knows how long before that.
Anyway, I've been a reader and a writer since I was a little kid. My particular favorite group is British women writers of the 18 and 19 hundreds--Jane Austen, any Bronte you can find, Virginia Woolf. I've finally found books by Ann Radcliffe and Fanny Burney. Of course, I read other stuff, too. (Including Russian classics!)
I don't have internet at home so sometimes it takes a while to post an answer or whatever. I see from some of these messages that other people have similar problems, so I'm not too worried.
I'm going to look at some of this group's discussions to see what interests me in particular.

Hi! I've got a question I've asked several times, in all kinds of places, and I never get an answer that helps. When I send a message to this site's help, they don't answer.All I want to know is, how do I get these messages to show starting with the latest and going back to the last. And how do I get it to stay that way?

I don't know if there is a way to make that choice "stick." But what I do is always go to the "unread" link and (most of the time) it takes you directly to the beginning of the new messages.
I do that too, Sherry, and the threads are arranged with the newest on top, but the messages within the threads are arranged from oldest to newest. It used to be that I could click the "date" heading and they'd reverse the order, but that hasn't worked right for a week or so. Maybe if I close it and log back in it will work again.

Right now that function is all screwed up. Has been for about a week. They're working on it.
Glad to know I'm not the only one with that problem, and that it is being addressed. Hope it doesn't take much longer!
