I'm reading 97 Orchard : An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement. It is a good overview of the immigrant experience in mid 1800s NYC!
Hi everyone. I am going to start the USA challenge soon (I am combining Canada and the USA). I'll start in Maine with The Cider House Rules. I'll be blogging here. Can't wait to enter the US!

How do you like it so far? I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Could just be my mood.
Lesley wrote: "I'm reading A Land More Kind Than Home set in North Carolina."Thanks for posting this. I was looking for a NC book.
I've reviewed my reading this year and have covered 9 states to date. I'm just completing Sweet Revenge set in Colorado. It's light summer reading set in the dead of winter.
I'm currently reading The Last Runaway set in nineteenth century Ohio. Almost halfway and really liking it.
I just finished
Jefferson Bass set in the state of Tennessee, in the vicinity of Cooke County, and the actual Body Farm. It is the first in the series. I really liked it, and read it in one day. I will definitely read the others in the series. Here is my review:

Headed to Maryland with It's Murder, My Son It was a free Kindle book and the reviews were decent so I thought I would give it a try.
Stacy wrote: "Headed to Maryland with It's Murder, My Son It was a free Kindle book and the reviews were decent so I thought I would give it a try."I've changed my mind. I think I will take another road trip with American Gods
I think I've found an old gem, I just started Their Pilgrimage by Charles Dudley Warner, about this young gentleman who travels around to various posh vacation spots in late 19th century U.S. - I'm really enjoying it (and you can use it for many different states!)
I've been too busy to read lately so I'm not sure if I will finish my challenge. I'm 5 books behind. I just started The Uncoupling for New Jersey. It's pretty short so maybe I can get caught up a little.
I'm heading to North Carolina for a ghostly tale, since it's October! It's also set in one of my favorite places, Black Mountain. The novel is The Storycatcher by Ann Hite.
I'm in Nevada and New York with The Flamethrowers. The writing is very descriptive of the places it is set, from the salt flats of the desert to 1960s New York.
I've been jumping all over the place- just left Nevada and it's time to visit Mississippi with As I Lay Dying.
I'm Reading The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed Americafor Illinois.
In Hawaii with The Descendants, now I can finally watch the film! I never do without reading a book first.
I'm in Mississippi with Long Division by Kiese Laymon, and really enjoying it so far. I had to look up 'wave brush' though.
Although I'm not counting it for this challenge, I'm in New York with The Goldfinch. I'm still in the early stages of the book, but IT IS RIVETING! I find all the different reviews interesting. Is it because it's more along the lines of gripping, popular fiction than college-taught American literature? I never give five stars unless it reaches towards the latter, but that doesn't mean it's not a great book. Anyway, so far, so good!

The main character in The Goldfinch is now in Las Vegas. I mention this for those who have trouble finding books set in Nevada!
I'm back in West Virginia with Hill William, and reading another book by Scott McClanahan is like revisiting my distant mountain cousin. He's very readable and brings Appalachia to life
Staying in West Virginia with In the Garden of Stone by Susan Tekulve. A local book club I belong to is having an event with the author next month.

I'm reading Main Street, which is killing two birds with one stone - the state of Minnesota, and it's on the 1001 Books list. I didn't know a thing about it when I started it (that's a thing I do, try to start a book as blind as possible) and I'm enjoying it immensely.
I know there are about a zillin books for New York, but I am reading The Museum of Extraordinary Things and it is very detailed and fascinating about New York - Coney Island, Brighton beach etc - around the turn of the century and the plot is very good. Woth a look if you need a book for New York :)
