Yeah, I doubt it could end happily :(. But sometimes a great book can elevate sadness to make it very worthwhile. I recently read Room and though I did have some issues with it in places, I did think the author did a good job of elevating that too (though that book was disturbing in its own right.)

I'm having trouble getting through Joyland so I may just start Book Thief on my plane ride Friday. Thanks :)

You should definitely read it. Was so amazing... my pillow was soggy mush by the time I finished it at midnight. So sad, but truly the most incredible book I've read in a very long time.
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT GOSHDANG MOVIE MAN THAT TORE MY HEART TO SHREEEEDS.
I did hysterical sobbing in the cinema.
