message 51: by Amartaub (new)

Amartaub Just finished The Way of Kings and will be starting Gardens of the Moon

I read the Mistborn trilogy prior to WoK. I've loved everything Sanderson has put out. He is a special talent, indeed.

message 52: by Brian (new)

Brian I just finished book 1 and 2 in the Ranger's Apprentice series and hope to have completed the series by the end of the month. Prior to that I read the Wizard of Earthsea and started the Lies of Locke Lamora but just couldnt' seem to get into it.

message 53: by DavidO (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) Ooh, I really liked the first 2 in Ranger's Apprentice. Haven't been able to get hold of 3-10 yet though. :(

Adrianna [SypherLily] (sypherlily) | 59 comments Is anyone else reading Impulse (Jumper, #3) by Steven Gould this month? I just got it yesterday! It came out days sooner than I expected, and I adored Jumper & Reflex

message 55: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Read The Pear Shaped Man and I must say George R.R. Martin definitely does creepy well. It was a really satisfying short story that'll probably make me steer clear away from cheetos or any type of snacks for a very, very long time. Feel free to check out my review here.

Also read Old Man's War and while sci-fi is generally not my cup of tea I really enjoyed all the philosophical questions the book invokes and while some minor annoyances prevent it from being amazing, it was a really good novel and I'm looking forward to reading more of the series. You can read my full review here.

Next up I'll be reading The Damnation Game because... well, because random.org said 289 and that was its number in my to read list!

message 56: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments ^Hah good to hear I'm not the only one to use random.org to choose their next read :P

I finished The Curse of Chalion last night. There was a lot of stop and go between the big events I felt. Sometimes it just took too long for it to get exciting, but it was still a pretty good story.

Going back to the Deepgate Codex series now with Iron Angel

message 57: by Lady*M (new)

Lady*M A Memory of Light. I just finished reading it for the second time. Before that, I finished The Lions of Al-Rassan.

message 58: by Ross (new)

Ross Kitson (rossmkitson) | 21 comments After finally finishing Amber series, I'm embarking on Sophie Tallis's White Mountain, a fantasy book on Safkhet publishing. Good so far.

message 59: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Children of Húrin and am moving on to Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth (although I'll probably skip over the section about Túrin since that's basically what I just read).

message 60: by Rosalie (new)

Rosalie (rosalietesorero) Finished A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Kite Runnerand Fall of Giantswhich is super awesome btw, and currently reading The Pillars of the Earthand sometimes read a few pages of The Silmarillion(I don't read it all at once)

message 61: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I'm about a third of the way through Way of Kings by Sanderson now. And with that being a behemoth of a book... it might be the only one I get to read this month :/ But at least it's a pretty good read so far!

message 62: by Lamora (last edited Jan 17, 2013 12:55AM) (new)

Lamora Finished Neverwhere a couple of days ago and I loved it. I read absolutely nothing about it, no reviews, comments or any such spoilery content - which rarely happens for me since I usually stumble upon a review with more information than I'd like and only too late avert my eyes. :<
Anyway, it became one of my all-time favorite books and I'm looking for more fantasy so I'll take a look at everyone's reading material.

message 63: by Carl (new)

Carl Finished Lord of Light and now onto The Blade Itself :)

message 64: by Bryce Fischer (new)

Bryce Fischer Reading King of Thorns. Not sure what I'll read afterwards. Lately been on a John Scalzi kick. Really enjoyed Redshirts, Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades

message 65: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Finished The Damnation Game and wow, I hadn't read something this bad in a long time. It couldn't scare me so it tried to gross me out, and when that failed it just bored me - with remarkable success. You can read my full review here.

I'll be reading The Ghost Brigades as I really enjoyed Old Man's War and truly need something good to read so I can forget The Damnation Game ever existed.

message 66: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) I just finished an Indie Sci-Fi called "Condemned" by Eric Dulin. Although it's not my personal style, if you want graphic-novel style action - and more action - in a techno, dystopian, urban world, you will like this book! It is basically one long running battle throughout, with some good descriptions of armor and battle scenes. Here's the link:

Condemned

message 67: by Tristan (new)

Tristan (hybrid-theory) After much doubt, I picked up curse of the mistwraith by Janny Wurts. Really good book so far, hope the rest of the serie is going to keep me hooked! :)

message 68: by Dionis (new)

Dionis I just finished "Hexed" by Kevin Hearne and I've started "War of Honor" by David Weber. I'm also working on Bill Hybels's Just Walk Across the Room, and I have "Dark Peril" by Christine Feehan by the bed for when I'm in the mood for something different. I'm hoping to get to Michelle Sagara's "Cast in Fury" and Brandon Sanderson's "Warbreaker" by the end of the month, and possibly Hearne's "Hammered" if I can find the time.

message 69: by Chris (new)

Chris (axionsalvo) Just finished A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin and now working my way through Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton . On the non-fiction front I am reading Blood, Iron And Gold How The Railways Transformed The World by Christian Wolmar which has been very interesting so far.

Well, I'm 200 pages in and I'm glad it's not a slow-paced book. Which is kind of what I expected, judging from the size of it.
I must say it's a good read so far! very enjoyable!

No, there's lots of action! You'll be wrung out by the end.

message 75: by Jason (last edited Jan 19, 2013 01:14AM) (new)

Jason (jdplusg) Finished Ready Player One today. Reading The Black Prism now. After that will be reading Taltos . Technically book 4 in publishing order but I think I will prefer reading the series in chronological order.

message 76: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished The Ghost Brigades and wow, I'm speechless. As much as I enjoyed Old Man's War I didn't think the sequel would be this much better in every sense. I'm generally very reticent about giving 5 stars to a book but this time there really wasn't much thinking about it. Can't wait to pick up the third! Feel free to read my full review here.

I'll be reading Sharp Objects next. I really need to start trimming down my horror to read list.

message 77: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (alexadawn) "I read the Mistborn trilogy prior to WoK. I've loved everything Sanderson has put out. He is a special talent, indeed." Just have to agree with Amartaub, I think my very favouite is Elantris.

I just started Fool's Errand the first of the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb, I just finished The Liveship Traders trilogy & previous to that the Farseer Trilogy, just loving all of them!

message 78: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished Sharp Objects and my overall feeling is that I was given a bag of sweets, and upon opening it, found none. It has a lot of potential, but never fully lives up to it, which is a shame as it could've been excellent in a multitude of ways. Feel free to read my full review here.

Just started The Last Colony, which I'm quite excited about as I loved the first two books in the series.

message 79: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (kidmarathon) | 11 comments I just realized that the fourth book in the latest Collegium Chronicles, a Novel of Valedmar, Redoubtby Mercedes Lackey was available at my library and snatched it up. Started reading yesterday and I'm halfway done

message 80: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I've read 12 books so far this month. I know, all I do is read :-). Recently started a reread of the Wars of Light and Shadow starting with The Curse of the Mistwraith, which was wrenching and wonderful. Am about halfway through #2, The Ships of Merior and loving every minute.

Other memorable reads include the first two in the Patrick Hedstrom mystery series by Camilla Lackburg, The Preacher and The Ice Princess, and The Cold Cold Ground. I do like mysteries as well as fantasy. I also enjoyed Wool Omnibus, a fascinating scifi.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments So jealous, Sandra.

All I can do is work.
;)
I've been trying to get back to Janny's books.

Well it's one advantage of being OLD and semi-retired. I still work 3 days a week so I don't go crazy. :)

message 83: by Lamora (new)

Lamora I'm about to start reading Equal Rites! I'm quite excited about this book since I absolutely LOVED The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic. I became a Pratchett fan after those two reads and hopefully I will fall in love with the rest of the series more or less the same. :D

message 84: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Finished The Last Colony and I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as the first two. I can't quite point out why (and that really bugs me), but after the whole getting the colony running it really didn't keep me as compelled though the ending was - thankfully - quite satisfying. You can read my full review here.

After putting it off for way longer than I probably should've, going to read The Blade Itself next.

message 85: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth. Next up: In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.

Chris wrote: "Terry Brooks The Sword of Shannara ....."

My first fantasy read!

Sandra, I've been thinking of a reread, ideally times to fit in with the end of the series though. Fancy Wool too.

Alexa, are you joining in on the threads in the sister group?

message 88: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Hobbit which of course means I'm starting The Lord of the Rings next.

message 89: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Young-Turner | 19 comments Just starting Wizard and Glass. I'm loving the Dark Tower series and have been waiting to get to this one. I've heard so many good things about Mistborn that it might get bumped up to next on the list.

message 90: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I had to quit reading Iron Angel. I didn't like the direction it was taking, new characters were introduced, whom I didn't care about nor do I know why they were even there. I read about 30% of it, which was probably more than enough to get a feel for the book. I do salute Campbell on his world building skills though...I just didn't want to be in that world anymore.

So now I've started a historical fiction, Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. I love to visit Hawaii, so I'm all over this setting :)

message 91: by Shalini (new)

Shalini (daveganbookworm) currently i am reading the book of tomorrow. the rest are non fiction books. and i will go to the book fair in february so there will be more books added to the list.

message 92: by Drew (new)

Drew 2/3rds of the way through The Way of Kings, so good so far.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Finished, Chasing the Bard, last night.
Back to Among Others.
:)

message 94: by Leanbh (new)

Leanbh Pearson (leanbhpearson) I'm reading Summer Knight by Jim Butcher. Love it :)

message 95: by Michael (new)

Michael (grydyn) Just finished Towers of Midnight and just started A Memory of Light. I will be glad when I'm finished the series. Its been way too long.

message 96: by Grianne (new)

Grianne Just finished The Way of Kings, and just started Legend

message 97: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished The Blade Itself and despite its few flaws I really enjoyed it. The battle scenes in particular were absolutely amazing and I'm definitely picking up Before They Are Hanged as soon as possible. Feel free to read my review by clicking here.

Going to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy next. (shame on me for not having read it before!)

message 98: by Shannon (new)

Shannon I finished A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin and am waiting on several other books from the library. In addition to some non-fantasy I am reading Brief Lives graphic novel by Neil Gaiman.

message 99: by Gavin (new)

Gavin | 11 comments I read Furies of Calderun and I'm reading The Vampire Lestat
