What Else Are You Reading - January 2013
Just finished New Spring and... I guess my expectations were a bit too high for what it ended up being. The concept was amazing, but not the execution. It has some good moments, but when you get a short story's worth of content out of a novel that stands at over 400 pages... yeah. Worth it for people who absolutely need to read everything WoT, but that's about it. Feel free to read my full review here.
My copy of A Memory of Light will probably be delivered tomorrow, so I'll be dead to the world for a few days following that. Can't wait!
On Wolves of the Calla, book five of the Dark Tower series. It took me a couple of tries to get through Wizard and Glass, but now that I'm past it Wolves of the Calla is a much better read.
After enjoying the Caliban Wars which was excellent, I started The Curse of Europa by Brian P. Kayser. I got this one from the author himself and free of charge too. So, let's check it out!
I am churning through Joe abercrombie. already read last argument of kings and jumped rt into best served cold while I wait for memory of light to come in from the library. also listening to Terry pratchetts nation and have gardens of the moon next in the queue on audio. my second time with garden. only read that and the second book of malazan. plan to churn thrum them all in 2013.
Finished my reread of Stephen King's The Drawing of the ThreeMy review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Starting on Ian Esslemont's latest Malazan novel, Blood and Bone
Started off the year by finishing Judas Unchained by Peter F. Hamilton and quickly worked my way through The Summoner. Currently reading my way through The Philip K. Dick Reader. Really glad I picked this one up.
Finished listening to Butcher's first Dresden book Storm FrontMy Review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Straight onto the next one in the series also on Audible Fool Moon

A bunch of us have a group(Malazan Fallen) that is doing a full Malazan (re)read this year (into early next year). There is a good mix of readers and re-readers and lots of discussion about each chapter.
We're reading them at a pace of 4 chapters a week, so we're 8 chapters into Gardens of the Moon with 9-12 on deck for next week.
If you're looking for discussion about those books as you read, that might be a good place to check out.

I finished listening to The Twelve and am now listening to The Martian Chronicles. In text, I'm reading The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, Beggars in Spain and Old Man's War.
I've finished Leslie Marmon Silko's Gardens in the Dunes and absolutely loved it. Now I'm focussing on Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World which I find quite enjoyable.
I've started Storm of Swords but I might put that aside to focus on re-reading Wheel of Time.
Finished Ian Banks' 3rd Culture Novel Use of WeaponsMy review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Starting Hugh Howey's Wool Series as part for my lunch time reading.
I finished The Cardturner:, by the guy who did Holes, both found in the YA section. This one was a story about a bridge player, including some fantasy elements. Sachs is good about getting into the lingo and minutiae of bridge in an entertaining fashion.
I'm reading the next month's read, Bridge of Birds, which I've had for the last sixth monnth. Now I have a reason to finally start and finish the book.
Finished The Silmarillion and am going straight into The Children of Húrin -- I'll be curious to see how this version of the tale differs from that found in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth.
Finished A Memory of Light. Good ending to the series, most threads tied up. Was pretty satisfied with book until last couple of paragraphs of the epilogue. Want some 4th age books.
Ctgt wrote: " I really liked the first two Scarecrow books from Matthew Reilly...."Love Reilly's books. His stuff is like half a dozen action movies in one book. Real edge-of-your-seat.
Just finished A Memory of Light and unfortunately I can't say I particularly liked it. It felt rushed at times and overall I don't think like this is the finale such a long series deserved. Feel free to read my full review here.Next up I'll be reading The Pear Shaped Man and Old Man's War.
Finished Locke and Key Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft. Not usually a comic/graphic novel guy.My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Tamahome wrote: "Almost to page 600 in Peter F. Hamilton's Great North Road!"You have earned a toilet break. How are you liking it?
There's some really good parts. But if you don't like a lot of detail, both in the settings and the characters, it's not for you. It has a lot in common with his other sf series's.
At the moment Dead Space Martyr and I found it very interesting especially as I played all the games so this one really gives some answers how all started. Those who didn't play the games should check it out as it's excellent horror story.
Titta wrote: "I'm starting this year with 1Q84: Books 1 and 2 and Cloud Atlas. I'm really liking them both. :)"I loved both those books, although they all require a bit of patience.
Me besides Old Man's War I'm reading The Webs of Varok. This month I also finished The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and Paul à la pêche
I finished Battle by Michelle West, which turned into a long slog by the 600th page. The Pear-Shaped Man has an odd pear shaped ratings curve. Martin does creepy well (see also Sandkings).
Enjoying having Dragonlance on Audible. Just finished Dragons of Autumn Twilight, going to listen to the Lost Chronicles in the spaces the fit between the original Chronicles, so Dragons of the Dwarven Depths next.
I finished A Memory of Light last night. Loved it. (Spoiler-free review here if you're so inclined)
Not quite sure what I'll read next possibly Ubik or I'll get ahead on next month's Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was because of other stuff I plan to read soon with friends.
In the meantime I need to catch up on my reading of Gardens of the Moon as WoT has put me a little behind.

Me besides O..."
I loved the 1Q84: Books 1 and 2 but didn't have enough patience with Cloud Atlas.
Now I'm reading The Blade Itself and Outlander and I'm liking both of them so far.
I just started Dexter by Design. I was shocked when I realized I did not read a Dexter book last year. That was probably because I read the whole John Wayne Cleaver trilogy by Dan Wells.
Finished Mistborn: The Final Empire and totally loved it. Starting Anathem. First time reading Neal Stephenson. I think my unsaid New Year's resolution is to read all new authors. So far so good with Scalzi, Sanderson now Stephenson.
Laura wrote: "I just started Dexter by Design. I was shocked when I realized I did not read a Dexter book last year. That was probably because I read the whole John Wayne Cleaver trilogy by Dan Wells."If Dexter and John Wayne Cleaver had a fight, who would win?

Not The Well of Ascension?
Not The Well of Ascension?
Tamahome wrote: "If Dexter and John Wayne Cleaver had a fight, who would win?"I would have to say Dexter. His rules aren't as strict on hurting people as John's are.

I'm the same way. I try not to read books in the same series in a row. Or even too many books in the same genre close together.

That will probably be after
Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was. I try to break things up a bit. Feel like a meaty book.
Bedford Companion to Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice, a lot of books on video game theory, Ethnolinguistic Chicago, and yeah. That's about it at the moment.
Decided to go for Wool Omnibus and first book is really good, immediately got me hooked on. 2nd book goes at bit slower pace but in return gives an insight in lives of people in the silo. Good read :-)
Read The Pear Shaped Man and I must say George R.R. Martin definitely does creepy well. It was a really satisfying short story that'll probably make me steer clear away from cheetos or any type of snacks for a very, very long time. Feel free to check out my review here. Also read Old Man's War and while sci-fi is generally not my cup of tea I really enjoyed all the philosophical questions the book invokes and while some minor annoyances prevent it from being amazing, it was a really good novel and I'm looking forward to reading more of the series. You can read my full review here.
Next up I'll be reading The Damnation Game because... well, because random.org said 289 and that was its number in my to read list!
I'm reading the Alien series by Gini Koch, the rest of the Old Man's War series, and Etiquette & Espionage
Finished The Last Colony and now about 2/3 through Zoe's Tale. After that I am not sure as the Feb pick doesn't look like it's easy to find for a non-silly price. $1,167 for the hardback... um.. no.Edit: Almost forgot. Just finished Ready Player One on audio which I thought was fantastic. During the 80's, I was at University and can relate to almost everything in the book.
AndrewP wrote: " After that I am not sure as the Feb pick doesn't look like it's easy to find for a non-silly price. $1,167 for the hardback... um.. no."If you can order from Amazon & don't mind paper books it looks like the regular paperback is just $7.99. It's still in print so you can get it from any local bookstore too although they may have to order it.
Just getting back to the internet after re-reading The Gathering Storm and Towers of Midnight and then reading A Memory of Light. I enjoyed AMoL well enough, but it wasn't without its flaws...Next up is either going to be We Can Build You or Technomancer in audio and probably Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut in print.
Rob wrote: "Dara wrote: "Finished Mistborn: The Final Empire and totally loved it. Starting Anathem."Not The Well of Ascension?"
Well, I made it 12 pages in the Anathem and kept thinking about Mistborn so I got The Well of Ascension for my kindle and I'm gonna read that.

I'm going to count this as a personal victory ^_^

Yeah - the background setting will make a lot more sense once you finish the original Trilogy. There are just so many references to past events and characters.
