(sometimes I just wish there were a preview function for quotes because it's always the second after I submit it I realize there's a problem)

On the other hand that same quotes is considered inaccurate by Wiki and HERE is a request for it to be changed, but I am not sure if it has to be merged with this one or left as it is due to the number of likes.

I'm not sure about the Meacham version. He seems to quoting it in a longer work and the extract just looks garbled. There are no likes so I am tempted to just remove it.
Having a large number of likes is no reason to keep a spurious quotation, especially when it (like this one, probably) was changed from the actual quote in order to give an authoritative gloss to the quote-mangler's political opinion, which is bound to get a large number of "likes" by those who agree with that particular opinion. That's no reason to keep a spurious quotation!Nor should you remove an accurate quotation just because it is written in 18th century English so it "looks garbled" to you and has no likes.
Here is the actual quotation that should stay. It's accurate, cogent, and pithy.

I said the Meacham version looks corrupted because it has a 22 in the middle and ends with what looks like an extra bit, Extreme measures” (including the quotation mark). There are two Madison quotes that might have been the one that the adder was thinking of:
1) The means of defence against foreign danger have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.
(Speech, Constitutional Convention (1787-06-29), from Max Farrand's Records of the Federal Convention of 1787, vol. I [1] (1911), p. 465)
and
2) Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged against provisions against danger, real or pretended from abroad.
Neither are particularly good matches. The first one includes references to tyranny and foreign. The second one (that you also refer to) has no such correspondence. It looks, to me, like a different item not a simple misquote or 'mangling'. Either of them might have the source. I picked the one that looked most likely.

Quite a few of the books have covers saying "Charles", and I believe so does LoC.
Banjomike, it's easy enough to check whether the quote is printed accurately; all of Madison's correspondence is online from responsible sources like constitution.org. The "Perhaps it is a universal truth..." quotation can be found HERE. But I don't really care if you add those quotes; what's really important is that you delete the spurious quotes that people attribute to Madison and others in a kind of "reverse plagiarism" to give weight to their own political opinions. If no authoritative citation exists for a quotation, then it should not be listed. The "If tyranny and oppression come to this land it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy" quotation is almost certainly bogus. If you can't find a legitimate reference for it, you should get rid of it. Assuming this quotation came from her book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", I searched several editions of the book on Google Books for the phrase "sings because it has a song" and did not find it in any of the editions.

I have seen a couple of sites list the quotation as simply being a "Chinese proverb."
If Goodreads is putting this forth as originating with Maya Angelou, can someone tell me where in her work it is to be found?

There are over 100 thousand quotes on Goodreads. I would love them all to be accurate but there isn't enough time, nor suitable tools, to do it. And if a dubious, but popular, quote is removed then you can be sure that it will be added again. Usually added several times, all differently and all wrong.

Hello. Would a Goodreads librarian please help edit my quotes? I have two of the same quote listed and would like to keep the one that mentions my book title since it is an actual quote from my book Organize Your Life and More. I would also like to keep the tags that were listed for both quotes (and the likes) if possible.

A fairly common message that turns up almost everywhere on Goodreads from time to time. Normally it goes away after a while (days or weeks) but since this involves claiming an author profile I would suggest you contact Customer Support and ask them if they can claim the profile for you. In the meantime just keep trying it.
