message 1: by Eric M. (new)

Eric M. Bram | 8 comments Someone, please correct this mangled quotation by James Madison: “If tyranny and oppression come to this land it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.” The actual quotation (from a letter to Thomas Jefferson written on 13 May 1798) is: “Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged against provisions against danger, real or pretended from abroad.”
