Unfortunately an assertion of non-existence cannot be sustained without an examination of the entire universe of discourse. That should be the burden of the originator-poster, to make an authoritative citation to the source, particularly for well published historical figures.

I was referred here by Paige O'Malley, CCR Goodreads "

This article is from the Churchill Centre:
http://www.winstonchurchill.org/suppo...
they conclude that one source of the quote was Churchill's personal bodyguard and that Churchill might have said something similar but that in any case he was 'editing' or paraphrasing a W.C. Fields quote from a movie. This article is interesting because it is written by Richard M. Langworth who is the editor of several books about Churchill including books of quotations (I'm not sure about the car books!).

This is from the QuoteInvestigator:
http://quoteinvestigator.com/2011/08/...
they trace versions of this witticism back to July 16, 1882 with many variations before Churchill could possibly have said it to either Braddock or Astor. The earliest versions were referring to the House of Commons so Churchill would certainly have known it.

The general view among these and other organizations and sites that have reviewed this quote seems to be that Churchill could possibly have said something similar. I've added "apocryphal" as a tag (meaning "of doubtful authenticity") because there is some doubt about the target who he might have said it to which does put some doubt on the entire quote but there seems to be no evidence that he ever denied saying it. Unless some new evidence comes up I think we should probably leave it since someone will only add it back if it is removed and it is still a funny quote whoever said it first or said a particular version.

Changing the subject slightly, I notice that the majority of the quotes attributed to the American author Winston Churchill are actually quotes by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. I'll sort them out later.

The line "Those who were seen dancing were considered insane by those who could not hear the music." is a well known line by Frederich Nietzsche; not Hermann Hesse, Angela Monet or George Carlin.

Well known, but probably wrong. The earliest attribution of this quote to Nietzsche is from 2003. The earliest variant of the quote is from 1813, 31 years before Nietzsche was born. This is it, by Anne-Louise-Germaine de Staël:
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/1285...
it should be "...as we should at a ball, where we did not hear the music; the dancing that we saw there would appear insane."

Investigations continue...

Not as clear as I thought then. Well it certainly isn't George Carlin :)

Banjomike | 5166 comments Blair wrote: "Not as clear as I thought then. Well it certainly isn't George Carlin :) "

It never is. I've tidied up a bit and combined nine versions into Nietzsche and two into Carlin. The Staël is untouched.

The Carlin link only goes back to 1997 but in 2001 he published Napalm & Silly Putty and uses that quote again but this time he adds "—Anon." as the source so we can certainly rule out Carlin. The question is who to attribute it to. The Staël version is very different and none of the alternatives seem correct but it is a great quote and I would hate to see it removed.

Scarlet Wolfe (sl_wolfe) | 29 comments One Urge
I added a quote from my book One Urge. I put the name of the character who said it at the end, and Goodreads automatically put quotes around it when I posted it. This is wrong, so I rewrote the quote and took out the name. When you pull up One Urge, it shows both the original quote and the correct one. Could you please delete the one that has the word "Damon" at the end? It is the incorrect one. Thank you!

I just looked and it's still there when you pull up my book. It's on the bottom right below the corrected one. Does it take time to appear corrected?

Yes. If you click on that quote it will say "Sorry, we couldn't find that quote". Book pages are cached and will take a while to catch up.

That quote is already on Goodreads, several times. It is by Charles Dickens. You should check to see if a quote exists before adding it again. I've removed your version.

Edited to tidy: here are two versions you might like

Valentina Hallo! I've made a mistake adding this quote https//www.goodreads.com/quotes/list/27552959
This quote is from "Pane e tempesta" by Stefano Benni and not from "Baol. Una tranquilla notte di regime"
This is the quote which has to be changed:"“Piovi pure, cielo nero, grandina,e tu,vento, soffiaci contro. Noi abbiamo sempre mangiato pane e tempesta.
E terremo duro."
Pane e tempesta”
― Stefano Benni, Baol. Una tranquilla notte di regime"

Thank you very much.

message 675: by Valentina (new)

I recently noticed this quote on my page: "“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith”

Number one, it is not anonymous. I believe it occurs in the New Testament. Number two, I did not put it on my page. Is it possible that someone else did without my permission? Number three, how do I get rid of it?

Thanks in Advance,
Robert
