You must be having a brain fart and forgetting that you are talking to another BOOKWORM...YOU CAN'T TRICK A TRICKSTER especially when it involves books LOLOL **ummmmm that sounds kind of dirty** LMBO

Books are just that way....they tempt, taunt, tease, scream, moan, groan and it only gets worse they longer you leave them lay.

Tanya (mrsreads) | 50 comments Jayme VA wrote: "I liked The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin, a LOT more than this one... "

I think I enjoyed The Passage, but for whatever reason I stopped part of the way through (maybe I needed a break to read something else) and had trouble picking it back up again. I think I'm just going to power through this one and not be tempted to put it down to finish a quick read in between chapters or something. That always ruins a big book for me. The same thing happened when I was reading War and Peace...

I'll let you ladies know how it goes. I'm slated to read it in the next month or two because of another challenge, so there's no getting out of it. :)

Right now I'm reading all about viruses in Panic in Level 4: Cannibals, Killer Viruses, and Other Journeys to the Edge of Science.

Hehehe...nope, just for fun! I love Richard Preston's books. Though, being a stay at home mom of a preschooler, it does sometimes feel like there very well could be who-knows-what kind of exotic diseases floating around our house. Maybe it is relevant to my job...

Your "good gravy beans" comment made me giggle, BTW. I might have to steal that one! :)

**Go Me Go Me....it's your birthday(not really)Go Me Go Me** I finished my 8th,9th and 10th book ☺☺☺☺☺

Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt which I really liked!!! It was a YA historical fiction. 4 stars.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver MEH....this one went on and on forever...I'm not a fan of repetitiveness in a book whether it's a word, phrase, whatever and this one the MC relived the same day over and over and over....so boring!!!! 2 stars.
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger I LOVED this one ☺ It was a mystery, ghost story, romance all wrapped up into one. It was a weird book and was a little creepy and maybe that's what drew me in....a little different than what I normally read but really well written. 5 stars!!!

Tanya (mrsreads) | 50 comments Claire wrote: "That Panic in Level 4 one looks really interesting - is it any good? I'm a scientist [of sorts] and it looks right up my street!"

Hi Claire - oohh, what kind of scientist (of sorts?)?!? I'm addicted to science, even though I'm a dork when it comes to doing math and I studied history and religion at university. I worked for a surgical consulting company for several years and became interested in medicine, viruses, surgery, psychology - the whole works!

Panic in Level 4 Cannibals, Killer Viruses, and Other Journeys to the Edge of Science by Richard Preston was okay, but it wasn't the best written or even most interesting of his books, in my opinion. It was a handful of mostly unrelated topics over 20-25 pages or so each, and none of them were as interesting as The Hot Zone by Richard Preston or The Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston .

I'm a Masters/PhD student in Mitochondrial medicine (sort of genetic/pharmacology related) so almost a scientist but not quite yet :)

I'm also a first aider with st john in the ambulance group and so I'm doing more training and now considering becoming a paramedic at the end of it!!

If you like medical/sciency sort of things, have you ever read any of Ken McClure's books? They're quite good, particularly the Steven Dunbar series. I particularly liked The Lazarus Strain (Dr Steven Dunbar, #6) by Ken McClure and Wildcard by Ken McLure . The second one is a particularly terrifying idea.

Tanya (mrsreads) | 50 comments Claire wrote: "If you like medical/sciency sort of things, have you ever read any of Ken McClure's books"

Your studies sound interesting! One of the stories in Panic in Level 4: Cannibals, Killer Viruses, and Other Journeys to the Edge of Science is about the scientists mapping the human genome, and the controversy over patenting genes in order to encourage pharmacologists to develop drugs for genetic diseases. You might be into that section of the book at least, even if the section about pi goes on for way too long...

And thanks for the recommendations. I haven't read McClure before, but I just added the first book in the series to my to-read list. Goodreads is so dangerous... :)

Tell me about it - I should be revising/learning presentations not reading as many books as I can!!

The gene patenting debate is quite interesting because there was one company that tried to get it so that all sequencing of one of the breast cancer genes was done through them. Obviously researchers and clinicians didn't like that so they contested the patent and got it thrown out because of a spelling error!!

I'll definitely give the book a go - always good to expand my non-fiction library!!

That's exactly why it's not on my impressive TBR. I can't do repetitive either. I watched a TV episode (can't remember which one) where they experienced the same day over and over, it drove me nuts. That plot seems to be a tactic when the author doesn't have a real plot but needs to publish. I simply refuse to buy/read them.

message 442: by Barbara ★ (last edited Jan 08, 2013 03:53PM) (new)

Barbara ★ Unfortunately I'm stuck on The Big Over Easy (Nursery Crime, #1) by Jasper Fforde but I will definitely get it done tonight even if I have to stay up til 3 AM!!!! It's a murder mystery set in a land of nursery rhymes which I thought was a cool idea. You know hansel & gretel (Gretel is an alien working for the police); georgie porgie (a criminal), old mother hubbard etc. Jack Spratt is the detective with Mary Mary as his partner. The mystery is humpty dumpty's death. Did he fall or was he pushed? It should be fun and with all the puns and plays-on-words, it is catchy (and does cause me to chuckle) but it's a real slow mover and not exciting at all. I still have 150 pages to read UGH!

That's too bad, it sounds like it could have been a really fun book...I hate that feeling of counting down the pages when you aren't really into the book.

I don't like repetitive but some of my friends gave this book such high praise I caved and said ok....BIG MISTAKE. I thought surely the author would make each day a lot different than the day before NOPE, I was fooled. OMG I couldn't watch a show like that. When a character or author uses the same word over and over it drives me crazy LOL Well,if nothing else, at least I can say that is one book I got out of the way for a few of my challenges ☺☺☺

That does sound interesting and fun!!! Isn't it funny how the most interesting/fun things can be made into the most boring things you have ever endured. UGGGHHHH so sorry...I hate doing a page count down with a boring book, LOL it seems like it just makes it drag on that much longer.
