Taking in consideration how the sequel ends, I agree with you... buuuuuut if I did the same I wouldn't read the best book of 2012... of course I didn't knew the realease date from the final book till I finished Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Karla wrote: "Oh, I know that. Which is one reason I won't listen to them. I would lose concentration.

I didn't mean to insult anyone. I was just worried about how long it takes me to read a book. I was born with a birth defect in my eyes/brain and my parents were told I would never be able to read or play sports. (I proved them wrong!) But, I read slowly and didn't want to let the team down. "

No insult taken. My sister is easily distracted, so audiobooks are a no-no to her. For me, it depends on the narrator. There are a few series that I won't even consider other format, since the narrator is so damn good that the standard book feels plain in comparison.

You won't let the team down. Everybody has their own reading pace, real life demandings. I can speak only for myself, but I think the main objective of reading challenges is 1)challenge yourself and 2)reading as many good books as we can. Clearly, you already did 1) proving them wrong. 2) Is the best/fun part of the process.

Happy readings

I'm sobbing on your behalf.
I was halfway through when they pushed the release date back to 2014. It was not a happy day, sigh.

PS. Go A-Team! We have awesome spies :P
I'm hoping that all 56 of our books are actually legit!

Yeah, me too. I can't check on them now - I'm kinda at work, so I'm supposed to be working ** whistles** - but, for the ones I did look last night, the page count was good to go.

Which reminds me that I'll have to check with Mary if she needs help with the page count or anything else :o)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Finished my first book, onto my next! I don't know that I'll be able to keep up with the chatter in this group on a "real-time" basis but I'll try to read as much as I can!

I'm next reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman , by M. L. Stedman. I think I'm going to read two or three books at once, so I plan to start both Dolly My Life and Other Unfinished Business by Dolly Parton and The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe today after work.

Barb Oh don't worry about letting the team down, Karla. We all read at our own pace, and that was taken into account when the teams were set up. As long as you're reading, that's all that matters :)

All Teams: Please watch your page count and start dates. Your team may not have as many books as you think. PM's having been going out to members asking them to remove books.

I'm going to start to books. I started reading Act Of Treason on my NookColor and when that is charging, I will be reading Misspent Youth. I couldn't get into Misspent Youth after reading a few chapters so I'm going to just stick to Act Of Treason.

Yes, it was meant for you, sorry about that, the brain was sleepy today. I lost count how many comments I had to edit because the words didn't have all the letters or were missing and phrases didn't make sense.

So, did you like the book?

Is just one week, a terrible one, but you'll be ready to start reading again before you know it! Good luck once again :)

message 275: by Karla (new)

Karla Glad no one took what I wrote about audiobooks as an insult.

Would something like Chicken Soup for the Teacher's Soul: Stories to Open the Hearts and Rekindle the Spirit of Educators work for the challenge, as long as I finish the whole book? I might have to wait for my next set of books to come in from the library and am just planning ahead.

I know that there are other pages for this, but I just wanted to run a possible challenge idea past people to see if people would be interested in it before I send it off to the mods.

So I was searching through the Project Gutenburg website and thinking about what challenge I wanted to do next, when the complete works of Shakespeare popped up as a possible downloaded. And I was like, huh, you know what? I almost NEVER read plays. Or poetry, for that matter. And it got me thinking about how to fix that.

So what about a challenge that pushes us out of our comfort zones? If you read mostly novels, read ten or fifteen plays. If you read mostly plays, read ten books of poetry. Etc., etc. Is this something people would be interested in? If so, I might send it on to the mods!

I'll pass your idea along to the other mods, Tia. Thanks! I would be interested in something like this. I've been wanting to read more poetry. I'm not sure if we've got something like this already (I've only been a mod for a few months), but here's the Reading Challenge Index if you want to browse it.

I love listening to books while I do cleaning (which I hate!)
Even though I'm not a fast reader I do find that the audio version most times is slower than if I was reading them. I tried listening while reading and found I had to speed up the audiobook to sync with my reading. And you do have to make sure your mind doesn't wander or you wind up rewinding the book. I use a bluetooth device so I don't have to worry about wires.

message 289: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, Joyce, I read while I do housework and it REALLY helps with the pain. LOL! I love that my (relatively) new iPod/Touch has the ability to adjust the speed of the narrator. Misplaced my bluetooth device in the remodel. **sigh**

message 290: by Barb (new)

Barb I listen when I'm driving (alone - don't want to squander a captive audience with hubby or daughter along lol) or whenever I'm doing anything mindless and/or tedious. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to finish a book, sometimes I can get through one in just a few days.

message 291: by Auggie (new)

Auggie (auggietalk) Does anyone else have trouble getting over the readers voices? I'm so picky about my audio-books and the readers. I prefer 2 readers (one male and one female) because breathy male voices for women irritate me about as much as husky female voices for men do.

Not to mention... it gets too funny listening to an author swap between voice-genders during a romantic scene.

Sadly, there aren't a lot of audio-books that feature two readers. During a long drive, though, I try to suck it up. Beggars can't be choosers.

They seem to be doing the two narrators a little more lately. I like that better. I find women are better at doing males than the other way around. I find that as long as the narrator makes the voices different enough I can tell the different characters apart. They don't have to sound too different though. One of the books I am listening to now just sucks me in so well "Old Man's War" that I don't even know time is passing by.

message 293: by Barb (new)

Barb Auggie wrote: "Does anyone else have trouble getting over the readers voices?"

Oh most definitely! I've started audiobooks only to give up on the book rather quickly because I couldn't stand the reader LOL One book I listened to recently had a reader who felt the need to (I guess) act out each line of dialogue. "Stop ... right ... there ... or ... you ... will ... regret ... it" Argh, it drove me nuts! I have to figure out which book it was so I can avoid that reader in the future :)

Another pet peeve is the books that are "enhanced" -- music, sound effects, anything other than just straight reading. If I want sound effects and music, I'll see the movie!

One of my favorite readers is Scott Brick, who reads Steve Berry's books and some by Orson Scott Card. I also like Ron McLarty, who reads David Baldacci's newer books. I'm sure there are more, but those are the two that come to mind first :)

message 294: by Mary (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments I'm listening to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society right now. My mother and grandmother have been pushing me to read it for a while now. It has at least four different narrators, all of them fantastic. Really enjoying it.

One of the better ones I've listened to recently that had both a male and female narrator was The Scorpio Races. Both Steve West and Fiona Hardingham did a fantastic job, but the latter was especially brilliant.

message 295: by Barb (new)

Barb Ooooh, I read that book awhile ago and really liked it. I'll bet hearing it from four different narrators makes it easier to keep track of who's telling the tale.

The audio for The Help is the same way -- each of the main characters has a very distinctive "voice" (each by a different reader), and they were all really well done.

message 296: by Anni (last edited Jan 06, 2013 03:14AM) (new)

Anni (mesmeria) Hi everyone! I just joined the A team. My bookshelf looks a bit empty and lonely at the moment, but not for long. (: I'm currently reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail - haven't got very far, so can't say if I love it or not yet. The next books on my shelf are Dune, The Color Purple and Oystercatchers, to name a few. Really looking forward to contributing towards the 2,013 books!

I see you're discussing audio books - I have to admit I have never listened to a whole audio book. I've started listening to one of Bill Bryson's books on audio, and also The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (which I have already read in traditional book form, but wanted to re-live the story), but my thoughts drift too much to concentrate on listening. So kudos to all you who can concentrate enough (and not fall asleep, which tends to happen to me)!

message 297: by Mary (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Welcome to the A-Team, Anni! So glad you joined us! :-D

message 298: by Mary (new)

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Also, the only way my thoughts don't drift off while listening to an audio book is if I'm doing something else while listening - working on a jigsaw puzzle, playing a mindless game on my iPod, cleaning, etc. It keeps me focused. If I'm just sitting there listening, I start to drift off and think about other things - and yes, sometimes fall asleep. ;-)
