Sarah Nguyen | 11 comments You guys seen the preview for this? I can't think of a bad SciFi movie with Will Smith (unless you count Wild West). Next summer can't come fast enough.

You can watch the trailer here:

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments i saw that trailer in front of the hobbit this past week, and yep, i'm 100% into it, this looks awesome.

then again, bad scifi movie with will smith = this most recent MIB movie, which was terrible. he's been kinda phoning it in lately, so there's a good chance this one will look absolutely amazing, but not really be about much.

Other than MIB and MIB III, I don't like Smith's sci-if flicks. I'm given to understand he's really not in this very much; his character apparently dies early and his son stars in the bulk of it.

Peggy (psramsey) | 393 comments I had the same reaction you did, Chris. "Hey, that looks interesting....oh.....maybe not."

Sarah Nguyen | 11 comments Wow, totally missed that it was directed by M Night. Whelp, fingers crossed...

Geoffrey Wakeling | 3 comments Ooh, I've only just seen this discussion thread. The film looks fab, great cinematography. But yes, I agree, every movie I've seen by M Night has been a HUGE disappointment.

I deliberately boycotted all movies by Night Sham after suffering through Signs. Worst. Alien. Invasion. Story. Ever.

OTOH, there's Sixth Sense, his first. Good movie. It's the reason he was allowed to make all the crappy ones.

Julia | 957 comments I disagree. I like M. Night's movies. I think he tells inventive and interesting stories, that I don't see anybody else telling.

Trike I've enjoyed some of Shyamalan's movies. Loved The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, as well as (to my surprise) The Lady in the Water. The crime the latter seems to commit is that it doesn't have a super O. Henry-like plot twist. It's more of a Spielberg style of film. Shyamalan does seem to be kind of douche, and he's made some genuinely terrible movies (Signs and that bees one), but he's not universally bad.

That said, this particular movie isn't one I'm interested in paying money for to see in theatres. I can wait for the DVD release.

Not so for Iron Man 3 and Pacific Rim, though. Favorite seat, opening day for me.

Peggy (psramsey) | 393 comments I'm gonna go out on a limb and admit I liked Signs. Was it a well-written movie? Not particularly, especially the ending. I saw it in the theater and was on the edge of my seat from the first "alien" sighting - it was scary and exciting in the good way. But yeah, I certainly get why people don't like it.

The Village is the one that broke me. There was a good movie in there somewhere, but I can only suspend my disbelief so far....

John Mckernan | 107 comments Did anyone actually see this and if so is it as bad as I've heard it was? It was never gonna get my movie theater money but if its a "Battleship" sized stinker I'm not even spending a buck thirty on it from redbox.

message 13: by Trike (new)

Trike According to the box office, not many people saw it. It's a genuine flop if not an outright bomb and broke Smith's 20-year streak of opening at number one.

According to an article on io9 about the movie's convoluted and ridiculous backstory, it looks to me like Smith watched Pitch Black and Predator one weekend and then mashed them together. He should not write.

D.J. Edwardson Shyamalan's work has been on a bit of a downward spiral ever since The Village, it seems. It's too bad because he obviously has talent as a director. Both Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were very well done.

Personally, I do plan on seeing this once it hits DVD. If I was the sort to go to the theater I would have seen it there, but I just don't go out to see movies much at all anymore. The prices are just too high and even if they weren't I would not go often because I have little interest in the majority of what is currently being produced.

Angelof I enjoyed Battleship more than I enjoyed After Earth. I guess that's a bad thing.

Pickle | 138 comments what an awful movie and cringeworthy that his son gets the main lead when he cannot act. The movie itself was awful but little smith just doesnt have the talent of his dad.

I really hope he doesnt get the main lead in anymore blockbusters.

After Earth makes Battlefield Earth seem worthy of an oscar!
