That's interesting about horseshoes and witches. Also, makes sense about the ley lines. I didn't really put two and two together there.

@ Mandi
I know about you mean about Sable's real name. I think I'd like to reread this book eventually, because I'm sure I've missed so many details.

@ Katie
I think I read that Crowley/plants scene out loud, too... And I can definitely see Tom Hiddleston, you're right!

Vicki | 765 comments 23. The pin would be a way to determin if someone was a witch since they would not flinch or bleed if stabbed. It was one of the test along with dunking. That one always amused me since if you floated you were guilty but if you drowned you were innocent. Shadwell has those beliefs mostly because the beliefs didn't really evolve they just stopped.

24. Agnes knew what was coming so instead of fighting against what she felt was her destiny she just determined to take as many of her accusers as possible. If you think that name is strange just research names given to puritan children. They sometimes just opened the bible and pointed to random phrases or words and that is what God wanted the child named.

25. I'm not real sure what is going to happen but I don't think the other kids were on board with their parents not making it. I think his friends recognize that just them having the whole world also wouldn't be ideal.

26. Definately loves the area. This is his home. Most children do not really like change in their enviroment.

27. I'm thinking without the prophecies it would have taken longer but i'd like to think they would have found each other sometime.

28. Dog reference was funny.

29. If I read correctly he no longer has a body to return to. It was great how he changed everyone he borrowed.

30. I love the scene with the plants. Maybe because I usually have trouble growing plants. I should try to threaten them with annihalation. Trapping Hastur in the answering machine tape is pure genius.

31. They are all together to ride out and bring the end. Gather all. I haven't really read Revalations so I'm not sure what their role is suppose to be.

32. Isn't heaven suppose to want the antichrist dead? It would surprise me if Shadwell had been able to shoot a child though.

Nancy | 577 comments Questions and Comments for the sections entitled Thursday and Friday

13) I love Adam's friends. Did you notice when Adam thinks things, things happen? The Lost City of Atlantis returns with live people. Was the Witch army due to his Spanish Inquisitions wish? (Spanish Onions - lol) Remember Adam's statement that Nuclear Power plants should be done away with? The lemon drop was pretty telling. So could Adam be coming into his powers? Could that have been what he did to make Anathema happy?

Yes, I think he's coming into his powers....but does he realize that he has these powers? Like when he made the statement about the nuclear power plants and then the reactors emptied did he know that it happened?

15) What did you make of the missing aura?
I think like others have said, because he's the antichrist....not really human??

16)So Anathema shows herself again. She gives Adam some occultist magazines and "changed his life." I wonder why the hell-hound didn't want to go into Anathema's house?

Animals tend to have this inner sense that things are awry before humans do.....maybe he could sense that something wasn't right.

17) What did you think of Sable's line of diet foods? Sounds like the authors are not too thrilled with fast food restaurants. Another known evil?

I thought the fast food restaurant was so funny. No, the authors def. don't think highly of fast food!

19) 6 double 6 phone number? Wouldn't that be 666?

Yes!

message 107: by Nancy (new) - rated it 2 stars

Nancy | 577 comments So I've read up to page 286 so far. I honestly don't remember/understand a lot of what happened in the story to answer the questions for this section but did want to comment on some scenes that stick out in my mind:

I assume witches have more than two nipples? When Agnes and Newt finally do the deed and the "earth moved" for everyone then she gets showered and dressed and tries to count all of her nipples.....I'm trying to imagine, how manyd did she possibly have?!!

When Madame Tracy is doing the seance with the group and we discover that she has it faked down to a science, but then she's really overtaken by Ron, who speaks to his wife. Also very funny!

Skuzz and the other bikers trying to pick out their new biker names.....LOL!!!

And I was totally grossed out when Hastur arrives as a maggot....that scene really made me gag.......I HATE bugs!!!

So, I may not totally be understanding the story in its entireity but I am definitley enjoying bits and pieces!

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Questions and Comments for Part Two of Saturday and Sunday

33. What did you think of Adam's conclusion that he and his friends needed Greasy Johnson's gang? Do you agree with his logic?
I think it just shows his human side.

34. Mr. R. P. Tyler had a busy few minutes. First the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse, then Adam and his friends, then Madame Tracy and Shadwell (and Aziraphale inside Madame Tracy), then Crowley. Whew! Which encounter was your favorite?
I think I liked the encounter with Crowley the best. It was funny that he was actually a bit lost for words for someone who seems to have an opinion about everything.

35. Do you think Adam was trying to make his friends into his own personal Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the crown, scales, and sword? Did he know instinctually what to do, or was he making it up as he went along?
I think he had an idea of what to do, but I don't think he was certain. As far as making his friends the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, it kind of seemed that way.

36. What did you think of the final showdown? Did it play out the way you expected?
No, not at all. I didn't really like the ending very much. I wish that it had ended a bit differently. I think the Apocalypse itself should have happened, but in an uncoventional way with the characters still surviving.

37. Were you surprised Mr. Young stepped out of the car, or were you expecting Adam's other father?
I was expecting his other father. I didn't quite understand the rumbling of the ground and all of that if it was just Mr. Young.

38. Will Newt and Anathema live by Agnes's prophecies, or free of them? Will they get married? Agnes seems to think so...
I think they will get married, but I bet eventually they open that book of prophecies.

39. Okay, so if Agnes Nutter knew the world wouldn't end, why did she say it would? Was it all to get people where they were supposed to go? My brain is hurting.
I think it was one of those, ways of writing to get the reader sucked in and then having a change in a way.

40. Did you think the ending was fitting, with Adam stealing apples?
I did like the bit about Adam stealing the apples, but I still wish it had had a different ending.

41. What is your opinion of the book overall? What will you rate it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
It was ok. It was not my most favorite book and I really don't understand all the hype surrounding this book, but it wasn't terrible either and I still found it enjoyable enough to almost stick with the reading schedule. I will give it 3 1/2 stars.

Courtney (melo_yelo) | 50 comments I just got the book, so I am behind. But here we go;

Questions and Comments for In the Beginning - Eleven Years Ago by Lisarenee
1) So we have an angel and a demon who aren't quite friends but seem to hang around each other. The demon was once an angel. I'm guessing the two perhaps knew each other before Crowley started working for the dark side. Did you recognize that Crowley was Crawley right away? Did you like how he maintained some of his snake-like characteristics even in a more humanly form?
"he was wearing snakeskin shoes, or at least presumable he was wearing shoes, and he could do really weird thing with his tongue. And, whenever he forgot himself, he had a tendency to hiss."

Yes, I got the Crawley, Crowley right away. And I do like the way that even though his form has changed, he is still who he was.

2) We have a misplaced Antichrist baby. Here's the run down of who went where:
The Youngs got the Antichrist and named him Adam
The Dowlings got the Young's baby and named him Warlock
The Dowlings baby ended up with the sisters. What do you think happened to him? Do you think he possibly stayed with the sisters or got adopted or do you suspect they disposed of him?

Perhaps the sisters kept him, which wouldn’t be a good thing.

3) We have several questionable people whose part in all this I'm unsure of:
Anathema Device - 8 year old girl who will only live until the age of 11? Did I get that right?
Newton Pulsifer - 12 year old inventor? Likes electricity.
Scarlett - former arms dealer who might become journalist?
Sable - wrote a diet book which slowly starves people to death? He signed a copy as Dr. Raven Sable but has no degree and is not a doctor.
Mr. White - seems to be present when bad things happen--Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Windscale.
Any suspicions on how these guys will come into play with this one? Are they for team Satan?

Not sure. I am guessing they will all play a part in the apocalypse. But I don’t know which side, all team satan or some on each team.

4) Thoughts on Warlock's upbringing? How'd you like the revised nursery rhymes? Do you think this experience will end up testing the question that Aziraphale posed about genetics? "What will happen to the child if it doesn't get a Satanic upbringing, though?"
I think it will show that both genetics and upbrings play a role

5) What role will Agnes Nutter's prophecies play? Will we ever find out what she predicted?
I am certain they will be an important part and we will know what she predicted. Doesn’t Anthema Device have the book?

6) First impressions of Crowley and Azirphale?
I like them both. Crowley is supposed to be evil, even though he really doesn’t care too much for it and Azirphale doesn’t seem overly good to me, at least not what I would expect of an angel.

Nancy I hadn't even thought of the extra nipples in regards to Anathema. lol I just kept wondering why they kept bringing that up. I figured is was a guy thing. But I honestly don't know where they got that from.

Courtney (melo_yelo) | 50 comments Questions and Comments for the section entitled Wednesday

7)So as Sara mentioned above I was wrong about Anathema Device. She does appear to live past her 11th birthday. She also runs into Crowley and Aziraphale and her significant part (at least so far) is that she inadvertently loses Agnes Nutter's book of Prophecies in the back of Crowley's Bentley and it comes into the possession of Aziraphale. I wonder if we'll see her again?

Surely. She will search for it.

8) Scarlett is now nicknamed Red and going by the name Carmine Zuigiber and is now a journalist like she wanted. Carmine, by the way, is vivid color of crimson so I love how these guys still keep their names in a manner of speaking. After finding out war keeps breaking out wherever she goes, could she be some sort of horseman of the apocalypse? Isn't one war? Could Sable with his starvation plan be famine? I may be way off with this one as we only have three colors. I guess Mr. White might be death if it holds true??? I've read a lot of apocalypse novels so that's where my mind is gearing to.

I am thinking Mr. White is pollution as pollution is listed after famine in the list of supernatural beings

9) What did you think of the hellhound? The build up of the name being so important only to be named Dog. Oh, the horror. lol

Definitely interesting, I am sure it eludes to something...

10) What did you think of Mary leasing the building and holding clinics for building team spirit among employees? I always knew those things were evil by nature. *smirk* Sounds like Crowley might not be as evil as he's supposed to be. Again a reference to him smiling like a snake.

ha ha.

11) Did you like Aziraphale as a magician? He sounded to be a complete failure. Well, at least till the gun came into play. :)

I guess it was funny that he was a failure performing human mind tricks that he could have performed miraculously.

Courtney (melo_yelo) | 50 comments
Questions and Comments for the sections entitled Thursday and Friday

12) So did you read the footnotes about the missing baby? I laughed so hard at the footnote about Greasy Johnson. "See? You were right about the babies." *snort*

Glad to hear he was adopted, and raised tropical fish and all

13) I love Adam's friends. Did you notice when Adam thinks things, things happen? The Lost City of Atlantis returns with live people. Was the Witch army due to his Spanish Inquisitions wish? (Spanish Onions - lol) Remember Adam's statement that Nuclear Power plants should be done away with? The lemon drop was pretty telling. So could Adam be coming into his powers? Could that have been what he did to make Anathema happy?

It does appear that Adam’s has powers that he isn’t aware of. I was curious about the cottage and Dog’s hesitance to go in and the horseshoe glowing. That all seems important to me

14) The section on Raven seems to confirm my horsemen theory. "Sable signed for it, his real name--one word, six letters. Sounds like examine." I went back to Red's signature and the quote about her name states, "The name she wrote was not Carmine Zuigiber. It was a much shorter name."

Yes, I think Red wrote War, and Sable wrote Famine. I am guessing in the next section Mr. White will sign pollution.

15) What did you make of the missing aura?

Hmmm. Moreover, what will Anathema think of it

16)So Anathema shows herself again. She gives Adam some occultist magazines and "changed his life." I wonder why the hell-hound didn't want to go into Anathema's house?

I found it interesting that it read “a little more of Hell burned away” once Dog went inside.

17) What did you think of Sable's line of diet foods? Sounds like the authors are not too thrilled with fast food restaurants. Another known evil?

I love it! It so speaks to what is. We shell out more money to get less.

18) How do you like Wensleydale's comics? Interesting kid.

Interesting for sure.

19) 6 double 6 phone number? Wouldn't that be 666?

yep

20) Could the spirals Anathema found be a series of sixes? For some reason when they started talking of spirals a series of sixes intertwined came to mind. Seems like sixes show up quite frequently so it just may be I've got them on my mind. Sounds like everyone is zooming in on Adam. Wonder why they decided all this would take place around his 11th birthday? I'd think he'd be older for armageddon.

I didn’t really put the sixes and the spirals together, but it could be. I just figured they would spin in toward Adam.

21) What did you think of Newton Pulsifier? He looks like Clark Kent???? Or is it Superman???

I thought that was very interesting. I had to stop to think about that. Perhaps he will be the Superman of our story?

22) What did you think of the Witchfinders and Shadwell?

Shadwell is a very colorful character. I am very interested in their part of the story.

Courtney (melo_yelo) | 50 comments
Questions and Comments for Part One of Saturday

23. I love that the Witchfinders come armed with a pin. "I've got a pin, and I'm not afraid to use it!" Why do you think Shadwell has such archaic beliefs about witches?

That part was hilarious. I think it was to accentuate how naive Mr. Shadwell is.

24. Agnes seemed pretty prepared to die. Do you think she was talking to Shadwell all those years ago, or was Shadwell merely dreaming about the past? Also, can you believe someone named their child Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer?
The names are ridiculous. Not sure about what Shadwell was dreaming, but it definitely had an affect on him.

25. More of Adam's thoughts and desires are showing themselves - UFOs, whales, rainforests, tibetans, etc. He seems so caught up in wanting to make the world a better place for him and his friends that he's going to destroy it by starting it over. Will he snap out of it? How do you see it unfolding?
I don’t know. His friends don’t really think it is such a good idea, so we will see. But the Four horseman won’t help the situation.

26. "Something or someone loves this place. Loves every inch of it so powerfully that it shields and protects it." Is this Adam's love Anathema is describing? Do you think this love will ultimately stop him from carrying out his plan to reboot the world?
It has to be Adam, doesn’t it? Who else could it be? And Adam’s love for the place and his friends is what possibly could stop the apocalypse.

27. What did you think of the interaction between Anathema and Newt? Without Agnes Nutter's prophecies, would it have happened? Will they still be interested in each other if the world doesn't end?
Interaction.... I am certain that the prophecies played a part in that. Since it is a part of the story, I am guessing they will still be interested in each other if the world doesn’t end. But it is kinda weird that her family already knew about it.

28. Did you like Agnes's prophecy about Dog? I like what Anathema wrote next to it:"? Is this something to do with Bismark?"
That was pretty funny too. Bismark.

29. What did you think of all the body-snatching scenes as Aziraphale tried to get closer to home? How will he get back in his own body? Will the fact that he's disobeying orders from Heaven have negative consequences?
The Aziraphale scenes are great. I love it! I can’t imagine this playing out very well for him. He has definitely gone rogue. But the Metatron did say he would receive a commendation. So I don’t know

30. Do you like Crowley's way of making his plants grow? "Say hello to your friend…He just couldn't cut it…" How about the way he trapped Hastur in a tape?
Threatening plants, it is so ridiculous. I love it. And bringing back the empty pot. Maybe I could use that trick in my garden. Make them fight the freezes a bit better.

31. So now the Four "Bikers" of the Apocalypse are all together. What is their mission? Chaos on earth in its final hours? Serving the Antichrist? How about the tagalong bikers - think they'll help any? (I thought they were hysterical when they were trying to decide what to name themselves.)
I don’t see them serving the anti-christ, particularly not War, she doesn’t strike me as the serving type. Especially to an eleven year old.

32. What's going to happen when Aziraphale and Crowley realize that Adam is not the Antichrist they'd imagined? Will Aziraphale regret telling Shadwell to kill him?
Well, what do they imagine? He is just eleven. I was very surprised Aziraphale wanted him dead in any way.

message 114: by Reed (new) - rated it 5 stars

Reed (reedraab) 33. What did you think of Adam's conclusion that he and his friends needed Greasy Johnson's gang? Do you agree with his logic?

I found it to be very astute of an eleven year old to come up with such a comparison. I agree with Adam, you always need two sides, you can’t have one without the other, especially with good and evil. It’s the same formula in superhero comics, the villain never truly dies and if they do by some ridiculous chance, someone else just steps into that role. If you eliminated a group, another one would spring up in its absence because who will the other group fight? What would be their purpose? Yin and yang I suppose, can’t have darkness without light. Smart kid.

34. Mr. R. P. Tyler had a busy few minutes. First the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse, then Adam and his friends, then Madame Tracy and Shadwell (and Aziraphale inside Madame Tracy), then Crowley. Whew! Which encounter was your favorite?

LOL That was fantastic! I think I enjoyed R.P. Tyler’s and Pollution’s interaction the best (when the crisp packet fell onto the street).

35. Do you think Adam was trying to make his friends into his own personal Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the crown, scales, and sword? Did he know instinctually what to do, or was he making it up as he went along?

I felt it was instinct because the Them were skeptical of their weapons but Adam stood strong by the decision for them welding the instruments.

36. What did you think of the final showdown? Did it play out the way you expected?

Dare I say, a bit anticlimactic? But it works! You spend the entire book leading up to this moment and everyone fears Armageddon and then…nothing. Done. It was actually quite perfect how it all comes together; we first learned about Newt as a child experimenting and failing with electricity but feeling it was his purpose in life and it turns out it was! I also liked Adam telling everyone on the base to just go to sleep—it was just so cute and innocent.

37. Were you surprised Mr. Young stepped out of the car, or were you expecting Adam's other father?

At first I was confused and then I found it to be extremely funny. Adam finds the father he can see a helluva lot scarier than the one that resides down below.

38. Will Newt and Anathema live by Agnes's prophecies, or free of them? Will they get married? Agnes seems to think so...

I read the smoke coming from the cottage that they burned the book. And wouldn’t it have been great if Anathema didn’t read it and just burned it but all it said inside the manuscript was that she would burn it?

39. Okay, so if Agnes Nutter knew the world wouldn't end, why did she say it would? Was it all to get people where they were supposed to go? My brain is hurting.

LOL It felt like one giant goose chase didn’t it? Events needed to play out a certain way I guess but ultimately it fell to Adam, if he was going to keep the world or destroy it. Which brings us to Nature vs. Nurture again.

40. Did you think the ending was fitting, with Adam stealing apples?

I guess so. I actually found him cleverly leaving the backyard more fitting to his situation.

41. What is your opinion of the book overall? What will you rate it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?

I loved this entire book from beginning to the end and have rated it five stars and filed it away amongst the favorites. :-)

Vickilynn wrote: “If you think that name is strange just research names given to puritan children. They sometimes just opened the bible and pointed to random phrases or words and that is what God wanted the child named.”

That’s pretty interesting. I had no idea that was an old custom of the Puritans. What if they landed on a bad phrase, like when the Bible is speaking of evil? Would they think the child would grow up to be wicked?

Courtney (melo_yelo) | 50 comments Questions and Comments for Part Two of Saturday and Sunday

33. What did you think of Adam's conclusion that he and his friends needed Greasy Johnson's gang? Do you agree with his logic?

It was important to the story. No I can’t say that I believe that we all need rivalry though. But I guess particularly with juveniles (and some adults that I know) some people always need a rival.

34. Mr. R. P. Tyler had a busy few minutes. First the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse, then Adam and his friends, then Madame Tracy and Shadwell (and Aziraphale inside Madame Tracy), then Crowley. Whew! Which encounter was your favorite?
I love the Aziraphal & Madame Tracy as one. But Crowley with the burning car. That was hilarious.

35. Do you think Adam was trying to make his friends into his own personal Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the crown, scales, and sword? Did he know instinctually what to do, or was he making it up as he went along?
Yea, I got the impression he was making his friends his Horseman. And I got the impression he knew what he was doing, sorta.

36. What did you think of the final showdown? Did it play out the way you expected?
Honestly, I liked the book UNTIL the last section. I thought it was lame that it played out at an Air Force Base. And it was way too easy to thwart the apocalypse.

37. Were you surprised Mr. Young stepped out of the car, or were you expecting Adam's other father?
I was completely surprised.

38. Will Newt and Anathema live by Agnes's prophecies, or free of them? Will they get married? Agnes seems to think so...
Yes, they will live by them, in time. I guess they will get married since the package was for Mr. & Mrs. Pulsifer.

39. Okay, so if Agnes Nutter knew the world wouldn't end, why did she say it would? Was it all to get people where they were supposed to go? My brain is hurting.
This is left so unanswered. It would be nice if they told us why her prophecy didn’t come to fruition. Or that in some way it did.

40. Did you think the ending was fitting, with Adam stealing apples?
Yes, that was a neat way to end it.

41. What is your opinion of the book overall? What will you rate it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
I liked it. It was quirky and different. I didn’t have any problems following the story. Not a 5 star. But I am glad I read it, I love to read a variety of different styles.

Questions and Comments for Part Two of Saturday and Sunday

33. What did you think of Adam's conclusion that he and his friends needed Greasy Johnson's gang? Do you agree with his logic?
I honestly do agree with it. I think everyone needs a rival sometimes. It makes life interesting.

34. Mr. R. P. Tyler had a busy few minutes. First the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse, then Adam and his friends, then Madame Tracy and Shadwell (and Aziraphale inside Madame Tracy), then Crowley. Whew! Which encounter was your favorite?
I loved all of them. I can't really pick just one. I did really enjoy the one with Madame Tracy, Shadwell and Aziraphale.

35. Do you think Adam was trying to make his friends into his own personal Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the crown, scales, and sword? Did he know instinctually what to do, or was he making it up as he went along?
If he was, I don't think he was doing it on purpose. I still wonder if he actually had any idea as to what he was doing the whole time and who he was.

36. What did you think of the final showdown? Did it play out the way you expected?
It wasn't what I hoped it would be. But, it wasn't too bad. It was anti-climatic though.

37. Were you surprised Mr. Young stepped out of the car, or were you expecting Adam's other father?
I was a little surprised.

38. Will Newt and Anathema live by Agnes's prophecies, or free of them? Will they get married? Agnes seems to think so...
I do think they will get married. But, I think the prophecies will always be apart of Anathema. That's what she lives by. I think Newt understands though.

39. Okay, so if Agnes Nutter knew the world wouldn't end, why did she say it would? Was it all to get people where they were supposed to go? My brain is hurting.
I do believe it was to get everyone to do what they were supposed to do.

40. Did you think the ending was fitting, with Adam stealing apples?
It was a pretty good ending. I love Adam and Dog.

41. What is your opinion of the book overall? What will you rate it? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but certainly not the worst. It was decent and enjoyable. I rated it 3 stars.

Vicki | 765 comments 33. I think that is very inciteful for an 11 year old. I do agree. If there isn't opposition what do you have to watch out for. If there is no evil to overcome where is the reward for good?

34. My favorite was with Madam Tracy, Shadwell, and Aziraphale

35. I think he instinctively knew what was needed for the end and knew he needed to counteract them.

36. It was perfect. Armeggeden just didn't happen.

37. I was surprised. I expected the devil to show up at that point.

38. Yes they will marry but I think that Newt burnt the new prophesy book.

39. To get every one together the way they were suppose to be.

40. It was great. That is such a little boy thing to do.

41. I really liked it. I think 4.

I still haven't finished either Ahsley and I have had a hundred pages to go for some time. I've got the audio so I may just end up listening to that. I like the book, but it's not my normal style of book. I love how you can comb through it and see all the little touches and the subtle humor/jokes they added within.

I just finished this book, and I have to say that I just started it because it was botm (even though I'm ppretty late), but I LOVED it, so thank you NBRC, for making me read this!

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Glad you enjoyed it. BOMs tend to do that to you! I am now hooked on BOMs because you read so many different books you would have never picked up before. I have found new authors that way too. I am currently really enjoying the BOM we are reading now.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I picked this up when I saw that it was a group read. I had started it a couple years ago and got distracted. I agree with Ashley that this sounded great from the description, but I had a hard time getting into it.

I finally got through it --- doing the audio instead. It was a great narrator in terms of doing the voices, but he did seem to run scenes together. I would have expected a longer pause when switching scenes but he didn't really do that so sometimes is was confusing. I'm pretty new to audio and with all the characters sometimes it was a bit hard to keep track of and I think I zoned out during the last 1/4 of the book.

I do think I might re-read at some point --- and I definitely enjoyed some of the scenes and the characters of Crowley and Azeriphale. It was a 3 star book for me.

I'm new to the group and think it's great that you actually do discussion questions --- I will try to read along next time something of interest pops up.

      ~ Buddy Style Reads ~
Three Ways to Enjoy a Book!
At NRBC we use three styles of buddy reads. These will be indicated in the thread title as “Buddy Read”, “Relaxed Buddy Read” or “Informal Buddy Read”.
A “Buddy Read” has a discussion leader and a reading date is set to start the book. A reading schedule is posted prior to the start date and discussion questions are posted each day regarding that section of the book. More information about these types of reads is below. An example is here, showing a reading schedule here.

A “Relaxed Buddy Read” is similar to our usual “buddy reads” except there are less questions and break points. For example, a book may be split into three sections and those reading the book should pause at the end of the section to answer some discussion questions, make comments, or ask their own questions to other readers. An example is here.

An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

A “Read and Watch Buddy Read” may be set up as any of the above, but we will also watch the movie or T.V. series - or even go to a play! - and make comparisons, discussing what has been left out or changed as well as the actors and actresses. There is a long debate of what one should do first: read the books or watch the movie? We usually read first, but it isn’t essential. Also, if you would like to join in, but don’t want to watch the movie, show, or play, but only read the books, that is fine, too. An example is here.

Deanna | 3549 comments Hey Devann

Sorry I'm late. It was a crazy weekend, and I didn't get as much reading time as expected. I have time this week before quidditch starts to read this one and will start this afternoon.

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments god i had forgotten how hilarious this book was

agree that the thing with the antichrist is mildly ridiculous but also this is basically 'everyone is AWFUL at their jobs: the book' lol like it's incredible

love crowley and aziraphale so much. i agree that they are the last people i would put on a high profile job though lol

don't want to say too much about anything else because i don't want to spoil things for you but i'm excited!

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments ok i'm reading the wednesday and thursday sections today, you're definitely gonna finish before me lol

i think the "Most books on witchcraft will tell you that witches work naked. This is because most books on witchcraft are written by men." part might actually be my favorite thing in this whole book. although just in this section alone i am also very partial to 'oh Lord, heal this bike' lmao

i'm not quite to the part where the book plays a huge part yet but i'm sure it'll be interesting since i'm reading this with word runner this time lol hopefully the fact that i've read it before will make it easier.

message 138: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments read the friday section today. not really much to say about this section as it's pretty short. i think we've been introduced to almost all the characters at this point so that's good [like i said, it's just everyone is awful at their jobs: the book lol]. excited for the next section since that's where things really start heating up!

I did not finish before quidditch, so I'm still at the halfway point and picking this back up today.

I agree about everyone being awful at their jobs. Sometimes I laugh, and other times I just shake my head in disbelief.

message 140: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i finished it last week i think and realized that i didn't actually have a lot to say about it other than 'i like it' lol but i'm still around so i'd like to hear your thoughts as you continue :)

Deanna | 3549 comments This made me laugh: (view spoiler)

I'm considering trying Crowley's method of terrifying plants to see if it works better on my own sad looking ones.

It's hard to believe I'm still in Saturday.

Adam - (view spoiler)

The converging forces - (view spoiler)

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I may have to come back and finish this one tonight if I have time.

message 142: by Dev (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments crowley talking to his plants absolutely kills me. and like of COURSE he decided that he needed to threaten them instead of encourage them lol

the saturday section is SUPER long, like about half of the book, which i mean i understand why because that's when everything happens but also i like books to have more of an even structure if they are going to be like that, and the fact that there aren't really sub-chapters either kind of throws me off in this
